This is my dear friend Noe. I have known her since we were small children. I've spoken to her several times since this happened and seeing her recount her experience on the news breaks my heart. Been in a similar situation trying to evacuate my former hometown here in Alberta this summer when it went up in flames. Thankfully only one structure was lost in my town and nobody died but I get the sense of panic and helplessness while stuck in traffic as flames get closer and closer. It look us 5 hours to make it out with 2.5 of those stuck in gridlock bumper to bumper, but we got out. I feel for each and everyone affected by this and every other similar tragedy this year... Lots of learn from these incidents...
i think ALL 1st responders......on all the islands, knows what happened and they got a "gag order"....or immediate termination notice.....if any of them spilled the beans. I cannot believe the POLICE not fully opening the road North and South stopping incoming traffic to allow all lanes to flow out of central Lahaina where the fire was now raging. Viewing footage captured by other motorist the police were blocking the road to access the highway North and South. People were grid locked. That resulted in the burned cars on Front St. people fleeing to the ocean and so many lives lost. This could have been avoided.

Been in a similar situation trying to evacuate my former hometown here in Alberta this summer when it went up in flames. Thankfully only one structure was lost in my town and nobody died but I get the sense of panic and helplessness while stuck in traffic as flames get closer and closer. It look us 5 hours to make it out with 2.5 of those stuck in gridlock bumper to bumper, but we got out. I feel for each and everyone affected by this and every other similar tragedy this year... Lots of learn from these incidents...

Residents who have lost homes in the fire are being evicted from temporary housing as we speak. It doesn't appear that the powers that be want them returning to their homes.

As a mainlander that moved to Hawaii to work for about 5 years, the level of nepotism, cronyism, and incompetence at some of the higher levels of government is mind boggling, made worse by the complacency and possibly ignorance of the general populace with too much faith in their government. This culture is pervasive into many local businesses. This is so unfortunate as I found it a wonderful place to live with some of the friendliest local people with amazing food and culture.

I cannot believe the POLICE not fully opening the road North and South stopping incoming traffic to allow all lanes to flow out of central Lahaina where the fire was now raging. Viewing footage captured by other motorist the police were blocking the road to access the highway North and South. People were grid locked. That resulted in the burned cars on Front St. people fleeing to the ocean and so many lives lost. This could have been avoided.

Agree. I’ve been thinking it’s a conspiracy. That officials were contacted by corporations and offered big money to buy up the land to build. Some officials refused, so someone started a fire to destroy everything so they can build.

This was entrapment. And there's no transparency. They don't tell you who gave the orders to block front Street. They don't tell you how they got the numbers for those that were found dead. Did they count account for the owners of the cars that were fried on front Street? Did they count all of the children not attending school yet? It just seems so shoddy, shady and underhanded.
This is so sad, so terrifying. The trauma will last for a very long time.

I want to know, why? Why did the police block the roads? What was their reasoning? To me, if you notice a fire rolling through the town, you don’t block anything allow people to go where they feel is the safest. I want to hear this from the officers themselves.
