    The first pc I built started off with just a cheap AMD Athon 3000g with 8gbs of ram and a 500gb HDD. I have slowly upgraded all of my parts to an RTX 3070, Ryzen 5 3600x, and 16gb of fast ram. Despite these upgrades I was confused as to why my pc still had trouble loading games and took a while to get up and running and recently learned that storage has a big impact on performance. Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial. Worked perfectly in my Dell Inspiron 5675 desktop. I had a 3TB HDD from 08/2015 and switched to a new 1 TB WD SN570 NVMe. I removed my HDD, restarted and the Dell recognized the NVMe as primary boot immediately, no issues. I began by using Macrium but it kept giving me errors (0 & 23) so I used Acronis (got it free because I had the WD drives) and it cloned in one take - approximately 30 minutes for approximately 250 GB.

      Got it working , had to go into disk management, and selected the new ssd , and right clicked and shrink partition (or memory cant remember) and then i entered 1600mb, cause thats the amount of total partition storage the old disk drive had, and tried all your steps again and it worked! I guess the new ssd had no partition storage separated so you gotta make some space yourself on it

    • @MrMikebutkus
      @MrMikebutkus 3 месяца назад

      @@joselosoya1231 Your boot drive was bigger then the new drive. You can "shrink" the original drive size (back-up) so the new boot can work. Even thought the disk was not full of data, the program cannot realize that and has to make the same amount of sectors on the new drive.

    So I plan to move the os to ssd so I can boot from it and save other data on hdd, I cloned successfully with partition assistant.

    • @MrMikebutkus
      @MrMikebutkus 3 месяца назад

      Yes, just change the boot to the SSD, if your old drive is there you can delete the windows folder and use that space for data.
      These programs won't allow you to just copy the boot and windows on the SSD so you need a SSD the same size as your present boot.
      I do believe if the current boot drive is bigger then the SSD, but all the data is still smaller then the SSD drive, it will run. Prices have dropped in the past year, a 1 TB is under $50 ! The move to the M.2 is the new thing, but your MB has to be just 4 year or younger ?

But since you still have the old HD and you do it right away, the old HD would by your safety. eg power blackout, PC freezes.. that stuff.

    What if I had a current m.2 drive and want to upgrade to another m.2 drive with a larger capacity? My current one is the boot disk that contains windows, how could I clone the drive and then remove it and put my new m.2 in the same spot on the motherboard?

    I did all of this, changed boot priority, now my Lenovo starts up exclusively in Automatic Repair. I can open BIOS and change boot priority back to the original hard drive, it boots windows no problem. Any suggestions?

    Couple questions: I am planning on doing this with a computer. It currently has a Hard Drive, and I am going to install a SSD M2. When doing the clone part, do I need to format the new SSD first, or will that automatically be done during the cloning process? Also, I plan on removing the old hard drive, do I still need to go into bios to change boot priority, or will the computer automatically choose the new SSD with that being the only option?

    Acronis didn't give me the option of what the clone will be used for. Furthermore, after I cloned my clone wouldn't boot.

    Very good. I forgot that program allowed you to use the HD in another PC. I bought a 2.5 SSD a few years ago, it has a program to copy that HD to another. But only that brand HD.
    I tried a "PC mover" program. I moved from a slow PC to a very fast HP desktop. same OS. It did move 80% of the programs and stuff, but icons and a website folder did not. Spend 3 hours checking for missing icons and fixing other problems. Plus a number of programs needed to be reinstalled, with the registration codes. Chrome would not update, so I ran a reinstall of chrome while it was open with my 12 windows and many tabs. Then had to re-log into everything. Chrome, Paypal, Facebook and other programs as non of the "saved passwords" were transferred. It didn't transfer Notepad for goodness sake !
    An yes...every MB seems to have a different BIOS and key to press. These newer motherboards have so many options.

    Just wondering how this process will be affected with Windows 11 or Windows 10 machines that have a TPM chip enabled/encryption (most lickely bitlocker).

    I've had to do this on my two PCs ... after a power surge and the damage done because of it. A question for you: How do you preserve your links? Links like custom folder icons? The new drive could have a new name assigned to it. I renamed my drives to the original name (label), but this did not work. There must be something else that the computer is using to establish links other than the name (label) of the drive ... otherwise, all would be identical to the old drive ... setup ... environment.

    Very nice video but my Acronis software for the newly purchased OEM SSD is indicating errors on source disk. Then it's freezing at some point.
    BTW source disk was checked for errors before starting Acronis an there were NO errors found.
