This is marvelous to hear this piece played as arranged by such a master. Played as he wished it to be heard. It is very different from contemporary artists.Less sustained pedal. Each note stands on its own merit.
Make no mistake, there's plenty of emotion in his playing. Yes, he plays more staccato and less legato & pedal but there's definitely emotion here. I prefer this style of playing in this piece. Also, give Michaelangeli's many versions a listen (also here on RUclips).
WOW....I am so impressed by his playing, I am almost out of words... This is one of the few times when I believe it IT THE BEST interpretation of a work! Oh how we would probably argue if we heard BEETHOVEN's own interpretations today. With styles changing, coming and going. Would we be able to LOVE Ludwig's own way with his pieces? (Oh, well...a question of the ages...)
If you want to hear more of Busoni as a recording artist, check out the "Welte-Mignon Mystery" LP's on eBay! They have everyone from *Horowitz to Camille Saint-Saens(YES!!)* recording their favorite works, on the famous Welte-Mignon recording pianos. FYI: the "Mystery" involved is...how these artists can still "play the piano" so many years later!!!
Busoni's two strengths which puts him in a class of his own is that he not only has the best conception of how Bach should be played but like Horowitz and to a degree Michelangeli, they know how to bring the most sound out of a piano so that their tone is the eqivalent to a Stradivarius our Guernarius violin played by a violinist worthy of the craftsmanship and knowledge from counteless trial and error experiments that they put in.
Actually Busoni recorded this on piano rolls, which sound engineers have tried to improve the quality of the sound, which why you're hearing it in stereo. My piano teacher in high school owned a player piano, and owned a copy of the piano roll of this exact recording of Busoni himself performing this piece.
Horszowski said (at the age of 99) that the greatest piano playing he had ever heard was Busoni playing a Chopin piece that sounded like a will of the wisp (last phrase mine; I cannot remember the words he used, but that was the meaning).
Of course! You are right. Even if Busoni was quite capable of wonders, that would have been too much. I got it from the website of Nimbus Records, where it says: Rec: November 1925 Roll No: 6928. Obviously they have messed up. It could be the release date though.
Interesting. 3:50 to 4:40 is like Andres Segovia played at the guitar. With very freedom on the rhythm, with alot of rubato. I say, Busoni and Segovia didnt play the rhythm Bach wrote in the score in that part. I am sure Segovia heard that Busoni's recording.
@AngelicaTross It was surely before 1925 but perhaps it might have been "produced" or "engraved" by the piano roll company after this death , which would explain the strange date. I dunno... :)
Putting aside your revolting and unnecessary childish language, you should perhaps read up on the Duo-Arte and Welte-Mignon recording pianos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; many famous virtuosi of those times were able to record for posterity, in advance and with the hope their would someday be the technology to play it back. Thankfully their was and we have these great records of those long-gone artists.
If this is Busoni playing Busoni, why is Wolf Harden listed as the artist under "Show more," and why is Harden's album of Harden playing Busoni listed as the album under "Show more"? Also, while the performance is very good and sounds much in the spirit of Busoni, I think Busoni played this piece just a little better. Check out Nimbus 8810, a CD that *is* Busoni playing Busoni. Busoni also genuinely plays Busoni on the Fone 9013 CD, but the Fone sound is of inferior quality compared to the Nimbus.

honestly, i am not sure that the pedal is in a piano roll. I think they added it, i an not sure
@@umegghju Some rolls had it, others not. Since Busoni was such a big name in his day, this device probably did have it.
"To Play Without Emotion, though ....is Unforgiveable !" Busoni achieved that pinnacle

the most inventive version of youtube ! Really great piano !!!!!!

I think it is sure this is the best, it is his arrangment and it is exactly how he imagined to be performed so it is clear to be the best.
From 1:48 through 2:20 there is a an amazing display of passion and imagination. Beautiful! Thank you once again for sharing.

An awesome performance by the genius himself.
This version is unique and I like it quite a lot!
Impressive work, impressive performance. Thank you for sharing.

That is a huge piece of memorabilia
why has this not got more views...?..
its some of the best playing i have ever heard...
Very instructive. Thank you!

Rubinstein said something similar.

Thank you for posting. "proSpiritofTruth" your words are true. My words seem so inadequate.

@NimbleTurtle13 Because they're tempered.
Von wann soll die Aufnahme denn sein? 1920?
Piano Roll...

Who is playing actually?
Busoni himself, on a roll piano.
3.13 looks like pogorelich
@b123b I don't think he played all the notes of those chords.
November 1925, I think.
@rnmmrn I don't think so......
fuck yeah 6:24
@lst9162 Busoni was one of the greastest pianist in history!
