Never seen this before, it was brilliant. RIP Paul you are a true legend and will always be remembered. Lily stands besides Danny La Rue as the greatest in show business
Thank you, I was trying to recall her name. I'm in the U.S., so not as familiar with her. But we all remember Mary Fisher in The Lifes and Loves of a She Devil.
Brilliant...love it... Until I saw her on the Lesley Garrett show I had no idea that Patricia Hodge had such a lovely singing voice....as for dear Lily/Paul.. classic, one of the best exports from the wrong side of the Pennines 💖💖💖💖 Thank you so much for posting this, brightened my day!
This is one of the finest versions of this song I have ever seen. The words are crystal clear, the soprano voices are crisp and sparkling. And the voices back off perfectly as the orchestra adds the flourishes.
I am performing this opera at The Frazer Theatre in Knaresborough North Yorkshire at the end of May this year with the Harrogate Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
She has a lovely(if light) singing voice. She sang Gertie (Gertrude Lawrence) in "Noel & Gertie" in the West End.It was quite creepy because Patricia's voice was just like Gertie's.
Have never seen this before - ooooohhhh - it’s so good but yet another sad reminder of just how brilliant our dear and lovely PO’G was…RIP Paul - you had talent by the shedload and you are so missed xxx
My mum would have loved this! The school she went to put on productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, and when Sideshow Bob sings pieces from those in The Simpsons, I think of her. Likewise when the brass band version of Three Little Maids From School turns up on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I USED TO LOOK LIKE PATRICIA HODGE ACCORDING TO ONE OF MY HAIRDRESSING CLIENTS. BACK IN THE 80'S 😊 GOING TO MISS YOU PAUL DREADFULLY, GOD BLESS YOU 🙏🙏🌹😎
Fun fact: I used to watch Lily Savage hosting Blankety Blank when I was little and had no idea that she was actually a man in drag. I was, however, convinced that Angela Lansbury was a man after watching Bed Knobs and Broomsticks...
I used to love Blankety Blank when I was younger, they have brought it back but I do not watch it because Bradley Walsh hosts it and I do not like him at all, I find him absolutely annoying, if Stephen Mulhern was hosting it then I would watch it.
Andy Partridge (formerly of XTC) once said latter day Paul McCartney resembled Angela Lansbury! It was when Uncut magazine's editors were asking musicians to choose favourite Beatles songs.
NotaFro - Same here. I had no idea Lily was a man in drag either until I was about thirteen...I used to watch the Lily Savage show (despite being inappropriately aged at the time lol) and think how beautiful she was...and I stand by my opinion even today :D
I remember Lily Savage doing this song where she was a checkout girl and there was a bit where she said "and what's these? Fancy greens?" Now I can not remember the name of it but does anyone know of that and have that? Please help me.
It's from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, The Mikado I think. G&S tunes are still quite popular - and the plays are very popular with amateur dramatic companies, as it's hard to ruin them (though I've seen some good tries!), or to put it another way it isn't hard to perform them in a way that both audience and cast will enjoy; thus, if you've ever had anything to do with AmDram, you may well have heard it there. (Note: in the US, The Mikado is considered serious opera. Which it isn't! Like most G&S, it's light, with a large element of comedy.)
And excellent for amateur dramatics, as it's very hard to completely wreck it (though I've seen some performances that come close!). Not if you're USAnian, though: they treat The Mikado as serious opera!
(I see someone else has replied but youTube is broken so I can't se what they said.) Patricia Hodge. (As others have said, I didn't know she sang; she has a nice voice.)
no because concepts kinda like being transgender have been around for way longer than you have, and will probably last for longer than youll be remembered
How sad that we lost him absolutely loved him. Goodbye Lily rest in peace. Another old favourite gone. 🥲
Oh lovely, dearest Paul, God Bless you!

Oh no! Please don’t compare them, Paul would win hands down.
Rest In Peace Paul O Grady you Legend
You should include Patricia Hodge's name, for completeness.
That’s what I thought too !
Exactly

@@friendlier Great programme. Classic 1980's. 👍

I couldn't place Patricia initially; thought it was Julie Andrews TBH! Certainly sang well enough. A fun rendition greatly enjoyed! Thanks for this.
and I thought it was Frederica von Stade (American mezzo), how she resembles Patricia Hodge.
Still brilliant mrs o grady..💝
when I saw Lily and Leslie do this in the Albert Hall [no - really, they did!] the 3rd was Judi Dench
Shame it wasn’t on film
Ooohh I love Patricia Hodge.
Wonderfully different!
How good is Patricia Hodge?!??

pretty good
Lesley Garrett used to wash dishes to make ends meet.
Can you amend the clip title to include Patricia?
LOL! Love this!
What did they do with 'The Sun is all Ablaze'?
😖 "The sun whose rays are all ablaze" 🙄
Leslie must've really hated performing with Lilly if she did it twice😂
Why?
Lesley Garrett and Lily Savage and ? ? ? There are THREE little maids ... Patricia Hodge being number three.
How and why do I know this song 😂 I don't understand. This is lovely, but genuinely don't know how I ....

Is this drag indoctrination?! Why are people freaking out so much today?!!
If you can't tell apart indoctrination from a drag show you're hopeless.
