The Mikado was written as a parody of British institutions in the 19th century, disguised at the time by putting it in Japan. This is a light hearted tribute made relevant to the 21st century.

There's a long tradition with this song in particular to ditch the old lyrics, which were of there time and make no sense to the modern audience, and do exactly what WSG did, comment on what happened. It started, as far as I can tell, with Robert Armin, the inventor of the pun, the second wave of comedy, who was Shakespeare's chief clown in the 1600s, and WSG simply picked up on that, straight out of the pantomime - whence Koko's makeup. Don't forget, the names all came from his children's nursery. Pooh-bah predates AA Milne (1920s), so ideally every time he's referred to, a slight but variable quirk of disgust should cross the character's face. That much detail, and well-done by performers who know what they're up to, it can builld to a ridiculous extent, culminating in Tit Willow. It is entirely possible to reduce the audience to a massive heap of quivering hilarity by generating an utterly incongruous characterisation before hand and then stretching it almost to the point of rupture in the mawkish sentiment of that song. Yes, it could be a fine lyric tenor piece - but that is the last thing it must be. It's the scrooping of the nails on the blackboard sense of humour, slapstick at it's most excruciating. And this sets the table for what follows.

Sometimes you need a chief clown to conduct the audience, bringing them in so they become unstuck from their seats. There's a lot goes on in a production you don't see, making the audience break the glass curtain.

You have a choice - comedy is in the timing, and although Sir Arthur was a master at that, having the same timing every time out is a failure of the CD generation who expect it exactly as it is in the recording, regardless of the fact that they may have close on a dozen different tempi in different recordings in their collective noddles. Therefore, the producer has to decide which path to walk - if the musical, then keep to the original text which everyone knows and allow the MD his head, if the comedy, then the poor MD has to follow the audience, who set the pace for the comic. And the band have to follow the MD - it's quite a feat of mind-reading at times.

If it helps, most audio recordings of this song - i.e. specifically for vinyl or CD - keep the originally lyrics intact, albeit updated to be more PC, i.e. replacing "n***er serenader" with "banjo serenader", and swapping "the lady novelist" with something like "the girl who's never kissed" or "the eternal pessimist".

As someday it may happen that a victim must be found
I've got a little list, I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground
And who never would be missed, who never would be missed
There's the white kid with the baggy clothes who's talking like he's black
The girl you date who doesn't get the jokes in “Caddyshack”
The Asian guy who cuts in front of every single line
And Britney Spears for accidentally showing her vagine
    And Bill O'Reilly's ineffective dermatologist
They'd none of them be missed, they'd none of them be missed
Secret Service Men: He's got them on the list
He's got them on the list
And they'd none of them be missed
They'd none of them be missed
Stewie: There's the guy behind the news reporter waving like a fool
And Senator Bill Frist, I've got him on the list
And the fat kid smiling warmly while he's peeing in the pool
He never would be missed, he never would be missed
There's the foul-smelling boy who comes to school in camouflage
And every bleeding member of the cast of “Entourage”
And while we're on the subject, HBO deserves a whack
For ending The Sopranos with a fucking cut to black!
And guys who when you shake their hand just bump you with their fist
    I don't think they'd be missed. I'm sure they'd not be missed
Secret Service Men: He's got them on the list
He's got them on the list
And they'd none of them be missed
They'd none of them be missed
Stewie: There's the guy who sits beside you and keeps farting on the plane
And Shakira's lyricist. I've got him on the list
And the smarty on Thanksgiving who says, "It's the trip-toe-fane!" (tryptophan)
He never would be missed, he never would be missed
There's the blonde who tells you loudly with a voice just like a knife
[falsetto] "You know, someone should do a sitcom based around my life!"
[normal voice] The guy who watched "The Simpsons" back in 1994
And won't admit the damn thing isn't funny anymore
Stewie and Secret Service Men: And anyone
    And every one...
    Who's ever...
    Made me pissed!
Secret Service Men: Made me pissed!
    Made me really really pissed!
Stewie: I've got them on the list
They'd none of them be missed
Secret Service Men: They'd be none, they'd be...
They'd be none, they'd be none of them be missed
Secret Service Men: He's got them on the list
He's got them on the list
And they'd none of them be missed...
    Stewie: They'd none
Secret Service Men: None of them...
    Of...
    None of them...
    Them...
    None of them
Stewie & Secret Service Men: Be...
    Missed!
Basso Profundo Secret Service Man: None of them be missed!
