The Cold War had a lot of weird alliances. Enjoy this extra video and still expect a normal video on Friday as usual!
I actually didn’t know that it turns out they had an alliance.
Love your videos!💚
I appreciate how you included the Darul Islam Uprising in Indonesia. That's some good attention to detail.
Never heard of this alliance, we learn something everyday!
👏👏

What's SSATO?
@@ethanjames1629 I Think he just mispelled it.
Fun Fact: One of the reasons the US sought to overthrow Cambodia's government in 1970 was their refusal to join this alliance
Although Vietnam did it because of genuine disgust 💀
and they hated vietnam so much they supported the khmer rouge 9 years later
The US, always the villains
The US actually had no part in the 1970 Cambodian coup d'etat.
@@TricaGamer No lol, Cambodia aligned itself with the Americans since they were the only ones that were willing to give them the air support they needed to repel the North Vietnamese invasion that sought to replace the Cambodian government with the Khmer Rouge.
SEATO and many alliances like it are like early formed groupchats. They're active and experience momentum at first, but ultimately they're forgotten and eventually get hidden by older more well established gcs and dms with people one most frequently talks to.
This... this is perfect
this one.
Same goes for quad
"Cambodia wanted no part of SEATO. We would look after ourselves as neutrals and Buddhists."
--Norodom Sihanouk
No secret bombing campaign, no coup, no Lon Nol, no Pol Pot. It's hindsight, okay, still...
Sihanouk always reminded me of Nixon in his realist approach to foreign policy even though the two of them were often against each other, but never entirely.
and then gets his country into ruins because of no balls and bow to pol pot the "friendly" guy
@@grayscale888average cambodian king
then bow to pol potter lmao
It's interesting that SEATO mostly had non-SE Asian countries in it...from what I remember even the Philippines weren't originally a part of it in WW2 (although I guess it counts because we were under USA that time?) - in a way I think SE Asia needs to do it now to protect against China but we genuinely need great cooperation and not be wishy-washy (we can still have some diplomatic relations with China even with it IMO).
Well the closest thing we got to that type of alliance is ASEAN but it’s much like an economic group like the EU but weaker than that Id say
Always a good day when u upload
SEATO is an interesting coalition, but due to the vast difference of culture, politics and geography, it's already a terrible coalition to start with
What about ASEAN?
@@CheezBoyz2009 i forgot to write but military coalition that is interesting, not just a normal coalition
Especially when some countries were facing wars, it really doesn't really wirk
@@CheezBoyz2009isnt thats mostly economic
South east asia more like balkans of asia
@@CheezBoyz2009asean is pretty stable despite cultural, government and social differences, simply because all governments try their best to put aside the differences and focus on benefiting all countries economy instead of seato just for the anti-communism
0:36 The way he roasted SEATO itself… 😂😂😂
I love how in all these regional alliances, the US is always in it
that was quick
i straight up started laughing when it dissolved

Turns out SEATO wasn't so NEATO.
I'm leaving.
"Wait, not the face, not the-" BOOM!
I think we need it back
From the ashes of SEATO comes forth the rise of ASEAN
Mutual cooperation among the Southeast Asian countries... definitely still in the works at the present day
we need the PTTO right now!!! (Pacific Trade and Treaty Organization)

@@redacted7060 nobody asked you, Sinophile and member of the 50 cent army
Absolutely!
@@miscellaneoussarnian5282Disagreeing with you doesn’t make someone a sinophile. Nor is being a sinophile somehow a negative thing. Alliance chains are what set off world wars, and I’m including great European wars in the 16-18th centuries.
There’s more nuance to opinions on alliances than you are presenting. Please be more respectful if you are going to voice an opinion.
What countries would be in SEATO if it was around today? I can imagine it being India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the United States and maybe Canada and a few others. Would definitely help the U.S. in its quest to counteract a rising China in the Indo-Pacific region.
"I can imagine it being India" ... Is Modi not glued to the fence where he sits?
In a way, the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or just the Quad, can be seen as a successor to SEATO. It's not an official alliance per se and going by the name, only has four members (Japan, India, Australia, and the U.S.)
@@allo-otherCould be India joins to take leadership
Good point, though that depends on which other nations join. After all, the USA is a Pacific nation with a vested interest.@@dr.vikyll7466
Really doubt about Vietnam. They have a lot of tensions with China, but they also dislike America for an obvious reason.

An holy alliance
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
Nah no one misses that it's still remembered
Fun fact: the reason America got tied down in Vietnam was because of Eisenhower's S.E.A.T.O
Bro Can u do history of algeria 🇩🇿
We have great history first Algerian state was founded in 300 bc (massyli) and then numidia 202bc and there's many other like : zirids, rustamid, fatimid ،deylik of algiers, kingdom of atlava, emirate of abdl-kader, kingdom of aures , kingdom of tlemcen etc ..
North vietnam vs seato be like
how differnt would the world be if seato survived ?
very likely, not at all
not much, however ASEAN seems to be doing much better
the idea of SEATO was antagonistic with red bloc countries like china, vietnam, laos, north korea, russia. many of the asean countries wanted to maintain economic relations with china, russia and vietnam & laos wouldn't have joined seato if asean didnt exist. asean wasnt necessarily against any country, so asean won out rather than seato. nato exist cuz european countries are afraid of russia, but in asia, china is historically important for trade and industry
That would've likely prevented the Khmer Rouge for taking power, which prevents the Cambodian Genocide that killed one fourth of the entire Cambodian people. The Kingdom of Laos would also probably survive, which means Laos isn't put under a puppet government by North Vietnam. South Vietnam would also survive and probably see massive economic in the 80s and 90s until possibly uniting with North Vietnam the same way East and West Germany did. The organization would've probably expanded more focused around containing China in the 2010s and onwards.
We go NATO, We got METO, and now we got SEATO! What's next? PATO? SATO?
CSTO
So we got NATO METO and SEATO
CTO (Chinese Treaty Organization)
Bring it back!
Seatos boss manager is colonialism, not asia.
Sad to see how this never turned out well.
Why did Pakistan and Bangladesh bounce? looks like right after that everyone else called it a day too
Because they didn't get support during their war with India. And Bangladesh became independent.
Pakistan was unhappy with SEATO's refusal to help in conflicts with India. The second conflict was what led to the creation of Bangladesh (which was only a part of SEATO because it was a part of Pakistan).
SEATO ended because the war in Vietnam ended, and so the principal purpose for its continued existence stopped.
ASEAN Prelude
You know what, screw NATO, we need this alliance back
I would have thought that it would stretch all the way up to Japan, especially since it appears to have the Okinawa islands
I suppose it was in a different one/neutral even and not in SouthEast region
That was because the US militarily occupied the Ryukyu Islands for a few decades after WW2.
@@EmperorTigerstar sounds about right.
Probably moved on from Tokyo or controlling the rest of the country (Honshu?), most likely from some treaty.
I'll read up on that
rip SEATO
Seemed like parts of Cambodia joined for a bit in 1970 the parts not occupied by the north Vietnamese. Very weird moment
Because it was the Khmer Republic which was an American backed military junta
@@redacted7060 there’s no physical evidence the US was responsible for the Sihanouk coup in 1970, but no one knows why it was so sudden so it is a mystery
@@redacted7060 That government's falls is the most tragic moment in Cambodian history by far since the North Vietnamese replaced the Cambodian government with the Khmer Rouge that ended up genociding one fourth of the entire Cambodian people. Only for Vietnam to invade again and impose a puppet government and occupying Cambodia for ten years while fighting off several insurgencies until eventually giving up and letting the UN hold free elections in the 1990s.
@@8is Khmer rouge was its own thing with its own goals, they don't 100% support Vietnam and raided their borderlands which causes Vietnam to invade it
@@redacted7060 That was after their schism in 1978. Before their takeover in 1975, the Khmer Rouge was completely depended on the North Vietnamese who fought side by side with it against the Cambodian government.
I hope SEATO Will be found again, headed by Indonesia, and for defense whole Southeast asia with Southeast Asia Nation as membership
Or maybe we could just make an already existing alliance: ASEAN, a Military Alliance cause us Southeast Asian should be really sticking together instead of picking which superpower to rely on
