i love that the animator was like “that was my bad, sorry” that’s so nice
I mean, they were definitely more respectful than the 2020 crew. It even looked like that there were things that they were aware of that they just couldn’t do, whether it was for dramatic effect or comedic effect.
right! i really love that. a lot of the time ppl complain about 'political correctness' with old movies/media and say stuff like it was a product of its time, etc etc - thats true, but it also doesnt take more than a simple 'yeah we were wrong about this part, sorry'. we dont have to cancel all non 'pc' media but we can also acknowledge that even dated/old movies can be inaccurate or offensive.
Truee usually i would see ppl denying others critiques, the way they responded to the tweets were very nice and i respect them for that
I even like that he pointed out that they didn't use some things to make the story work or for dramatic/comedic effect because, well, it's art, it doesn't have to be accurate to portray real feelings and the cartoon never pretended to be historically accurate. And I love how open they are to learning new stuff and to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism
@@user-vs1it5yu8u especially because there's a line between inaccurate or offensive. like, there are things that original Mulan could've easily fixed and were probably a result of ignorance around Chinese culture, it's not like they're so harmful that we need to cancel the whole thing (at least from my perspective as a white person, and I know that I don't and can't speak for Chinese people).

The hair cutting scene is definitely something for western audiences, where it's generally seen to be feminine if you have long hair. I think you're absolutely right about accuracy vs heart though. It's obviously bad to be flagrantly wrong about the setting you're trying to appropriate for your story, but I'd rather someone put genuine care into a good story with mistakes than whatever Mulan 2020 was going for.
If it makes you feel better, interpret the hair cutting as burning the bridges behind her so she can’t go home again unless a miracle happens.
Well this movie got more right than the 2020 version anyway, so if nothing else, it’s decent. Also just a good empowerment story for the world to see, and a fun, looser film in general.

This

PERIOD.
Bonus points if he confronted the emperor still in drag
I'm gonna draw it
So I hope this doesn't get buried. Because two of my animation professors worked on the original Mulan. Specifically in the special effects department. The intro sequence of the ink painting was originally going to be Chinese shadow puppetry briefly explaining the ballad and setting the scene. They were trying to figure out a way to make the puppets slowly come in and out of focus as they were "brought against" the rice paper and then taken back. Unfortunately, this research was costing too much, and they still had a lot of other effects to make, so the intro was switched to the one in the movie.
Some other fun facts:
All of the flags are 3D animated. My professor had a coworker run up and down the hallway with a giant flag to study how it moved.
The cricket cage and comb are also 3D. Basically anything that looks like it would be a PAIN to animate by hand was done in 3D. This also includes the ever-famous "Hun Charge" scene.
This movie was created primarily by the now defunct Orlando Studio in Florida. This studio would go on to make Lilo and Stitch.
That's sick!
amazing! Makes sense that studio made these two films
I am also taking animation in school. Isn't it amazing to learn about your fave movies from the peeps who MADE them?! Plus they all like, know each other!
Oh yeah I saw a talk from a professor on that.

A nice fact is that after "A girl worth fighting for" they don't sing again in the whole movie, it's possible that this is meant to give the movie a more serious tone and atmosphere.

I think the Chinese stereotype(and larger Asian stereotype too) of "honor" is actually from us immigrant families. My grandparents grew up in China and immigrated into the US just before my father was born. "Honor" was sorta an emphasized thing, though we never _really_ said "honor" per se. As a kid I definitely explained things to my friends just as the "honor" thing since it conveyed 90% of what it needed to much easier than explaining that I'm terrified of dissapointing the legacy of my grandfather(who passed before I was born) and his success in America.
there are no Asian stereotype. there is east Asian stereotype. don't mistake east asia for entire Asia.
@@mishterkhalid3117?
I wonder if that need to "make a name for oneself" in the US is behind it? US culture appears from the outside as very dynastic, to the point of calling people "junior".
@@mishterkhalid3117 so you`ve never heard of the Asian parents stereotype, huh
What I think he means is, for example, people from Isreal are Asian. Some people from Egypt are Asian. People from Iran are Asian. Most people from Turkey are Asian and on and on and on.
But then there's people like you who just sum up all orientals as "Asians."
While it's true they are Asians, it's dismissive of other Asian people.
Also the idea that there's an east asian steroetype is also spurious. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Laosian, cambodians and others all have different cultural norms and are not "all the same" like people seem to think.
Try to be better people, thanks.

i second @Project Anomaly
Huh, that actually makes sense
That's a good watsonian explaination. Although I don't think Mulan would have been able to come up with a plan like that at that point in the movie. I think she was just having anti-confucian moment
@@AbsolXGuardian
I think her hair was simply too long to tie into a sturdy top knot. So she had to cut it a bit.
It took me until right now to realize that having the guy soldiers dress up in drag at the end was a bit more than a "man in a dress" joke. Like, this is a movie about a person pretending to be a sex/gender they're not in order to play a hero role how did I not see that they are paralleling Mulan's story by having her friends break in as concubines and help save the day from a traditionally feminine role *face palm*
I also love how Mulan has to train and learn to use her strengths and talents as opposed to just being wicked strong from the start. It plagues both male and female hero stories when the main character has no development and is just instantly good and the best at everything. Mulan became an even stronger "strong female character" to me as a little girl because she didn't naturally have a conan the barbarian level of physical strength in order for her to be a great warrior (in fact, she was appropriately the weakest one at the beginning and the only one Shang Li sent home for being such a wimp). She developed her skills with training and determination but what sets her apart is her wits. She did use "strength" and "discipline" to climb the pole like Shang Li said she would need to, but in the end it was her problem solving ability that got her to the top. She likely never would have been able to climb it with brute strength alone, but she didn't need to because physical power (traditionally masculine trait) isn't the only way you can excel.
Before I thought the message of this movie was "girls can be just as good as guys if they try hard enough" but now im realizing a more appropriate theme is "Strength in femininity". Realizing this now, I see the true climax of the film being the moment when Mulan stops the sword with her fan. To me, this was "strength in femininity" symbolized.
Actually, it goes even deeper than that. The usual trivia fact that there are no songs in the movie after Girl Worth Fighting For? Only mostly true. There's actually a brief reprise of Be a Man during the scene where they infiltrate the palace, which can be read as implying that it *is* being a man to be willing to do something like that
"Strength in femininity" seriously?
Mulan just showed that with enough wits and bravery, she could outmatch brute strength.
@@tarnw3301That doesnt cancel what they said tho?
@geministrial950 i m not sure if problem solving ability ("what lets her come out on top") must be seen as a female exclusiv trait. So strength in femininity may be a little too much, but it sure does send the message that girls can use wit and determination to achieve even better results. Brute strength is not the most important factor. Sure, the movie mainly wants to adress women with this message, but it basically appllies to anyone who may not have a physical advantage.
@@nickthequick2326 "Strength in femininity" means Mulan uses her abilities and talents to excel without forcing herself to be like a man or do things in the way they did. Nobody said problem-solving is a female-exclusive trait but the fact she did use innate abilities to accomplish her goals rather than trying to be like the boys, showed that she could be strong (not physical) and feminine at the same time, that femininity and strength are not mutually exclusive, because even though she was dressed like a man, she never was naturally masculine or wanted to be a man, it was due her circumstances. That's what it means the expression since a lot of movies and marketing always try to masculinize female characters to convey strength and competence, sort of "be more like men to be strong, smart, this or that..."
As a fellow Asian-parent-haver, hearing "why didn't she come back with a boyfriend?" is something every atom of my being can relate to.

There's something that is nice in the animated movie is that you can feel they did quite a bit of research on Chinese history and yeah it may not be super accurate but I feel like you can feel the artistic team's enthusiasm for its visual elements, and little details. It feels more like a homage than a ripoff.
I feel like most Chinese people are not super picky about historical accuracy since the historical c-dramas or even fiction (as you mentionned, historical fanfic) are kind of all over the place as well, as my dad loves to point out. I think it would be sort of hypocritical to say only Chinese people are allowed to have fun with that, which is why Mulan 1998 feels quite okay. The reason why the 2020 version doesn't feel that way is also because the chinses elements in the story feel more like a constraints to the creator who end up kind of throwing a bunch of "Chinese" stuff randomly into a story rather than having fun exploring these elements.
It feels kinda like how Japanese anime sometimes uses Catholic symbolism just because they think it looks cool, even though they don't know much about it.

This movie was made at a time where cultural accuracy wasn't as important as it is now and it STILL managed to be more accurate than the mess that is Mulan 2020
Yea, What the hell is up with mulan 2020? I know 2020 already was a disaster but They didnt need to make it MORE of a disaster lol
Cultural accuracy still isn't important unless it's a foreign culture. Western/European period dramas have somehow been getting LESS accurate over the decades.

@zaliapoo dessine draws Year.
And I don’t share the pessimism others have and never will.
and they made an effort to have the two leads voiced by asian actors (Ming Na and B.D. Wong)
I feel that some of these inaccuracies are actually the animators and writers using shorthand to reach their audience better. For example, it’ll be far easier for the standard Western audience to understand “Now all of China knows you’re here!” Rather than “now all of the dynasty knows you’re here!”
Sometimes, shorthand does absolutely need to win over accuracy.
Same for the hair cutting scene, again for a standard Western audience shorter hair is typically associated with masculinity so her cutting her hair makes it easier for people to understand what is going on even if from a historical standpoint it doesn't make sense. Of course the point of the video is mostly just to point out the inaccuracies so you know about them, I don't think she's trying to say that all of them are inherently flawed.
Or you could say cutting the hair means burning the bridges behind her.
Yup. It’s a cartoon for kids. No need to nuke everything to be “real”. This story is based on a legend anyway.

Chinese dragons are Gyarados and Dragonite, not Charizard.
Okay so I'm not the only one who thought Gyarados kinda looked like a chinese dragon

Charizard is actually not a dragon type, but a lizard, so... everything's ok?

One thing I would change in Mulan (1998) is Mushu's ending. I think it would have really cemented his character development if the Ancestors offered him a guardianship position after Mulan's victory, but he chose to turn it down, because he found satisfaction in being Mulan's friend. That would show true humility on his part.
Would parallel Mulan's own ending as well
Fun fact I bet you didn’t notice: Mulan is ambidextrous. In the beginning of the movie she uses her left hand to write but later when she uses a sword she uses her right hand
Yes, but maybe no. There's different types of ambidexterity. For instance, I can do many things with both hands (to a relative degree of equality), but I have a preference for my right hand for common tasks like writing, while when I actively participated in martial arts, I fought southpaw, medically I am considered "Right Dominant Ambidextrous", meaning i instinctively do many tasks with my right hand dominant (and in my specific case, despite being capable of either hand), while doing specific tasks with my left hand dominant. Given that Mulan displays the opposite inclination, writing left, and fighting standard, she is probably a "Left Dominant Ambidextrous".
Both RDA and LDA are capable of being true ambidextrous, but neither require it. If you're RDA or LDA you don't necessarily have the ability to do everything ambi, but at a minimum do certain specific tasks with a preference opposite of your dominant side. So she could be a true ambi, or she could just fight standard and do everything else left handed, and be the bare minimum of an LDA.

I kinda took it as the friends were eager to believe and help her, but he was still mulling it over while they were dressing up, and by the time he got over himself there wasn't time for him to dress up, too. That said, that's just how I rationalized it. The more obvious answer is that Disney execs didn't want the handsome male lead in a dress, but were okay with it being the comedic characters. I think it worked out though. Sheng was hurt by Mulan's deception, (to a point that it lent even more credence to him having feelings for 'Ping'), so his refusal to listen or assist until he could really come to terms with the fact that she was right, and had been right all along, and that her deception hadn't been to hurt him. It also made sense for her friends, who have been on her side from the get go no matter who she is, to leap to assist her which gave them more time to prep for the plan.
@@NoGirlsOnTheInternet I've never seen a dude in a disney film so hurt because his crush didn't have a penis.

I feel like maybe one of the reasons Mulan got away with hugging the emperor was because animators wanted people to like the emperor and see him as a stern but kindly elderly/grandfatherly figure. Also, in the second movie it's revealed he has 3 daughters that are (I'm guessing here) likely around Mulan's age. So maybe he sees this spunky girl with a good heart and thinks "Ah, I have a 4th daughter now." Which is both hilarious and kind of sweet.
The problem is I don't think hugging was a real thing in ancient china.
considering how much of a big deal it would be for the emperor to bow to anyone, and how US audiences probably wouldn't understand that, I imagine the hug was to reinforce just how much Mulan was allowed to get away with after saving the entire country

Wasn't sure where to leave these tidbits of intriguing chinese medical history where they'd be seen by people, so this comment is probably as good as any:
chinese physicians back then would prescribe herbal medicines you had to get at apothecaries, but often, the doctors were actually employees of and paid for by the apothecaries, with the obvious goal of prescribing as much expensive medicine as possible. The idea that's still floating around sometimes that ancient chinese physicians were paid as long as people remained healthy is a myth.
Also, the dominant medical philosophy of that time would be one that imagines the human body to be essentially structured like the Imperial state (replacing earlier models that were rooted in spiritism and ancestor worship) with the curious result that physicians of that era insisted there were no heart diseases, because the heart represented the Emperor.
Also, Mulans ancestor mentioning his children all became acupuncturists is an anachronism. By Mulans time, there was no acupuncture. The earliest artifacts that can be interpreted as acupuncture needles come around 500 years later, but are most likely not acupuncture needles (they are much too crude for that) and more likely lancets for bloodletting. (Unless you subscribe to dubious schools trying to date back the history of acupuncture to the neolithic era, long before the underlying medical philosophy even existed)

Something I noticed while rewatching Mulan is Mulan and Shang’s horses. Mulan has a black horse with white accents while Shang has a white horse with black accents. Now I’ve done very surface level researched so feel free to correct me but I think this is meant to represent them and yin and Yang. Mulan in this case would represent Yin: femininity, chaos, and a few other things similar to that (this makes sense since she is a woman but she chooses to break from the mold her society has assigned her to in order to save her father.) Meanwhile, Shang would represent Yang: masculinity, order, etc. (this is because he’s male and as an army general, acts very much as society expect him to until he meets Mulan.) This is just my observations though, I doubt it’s what the film makers were intending though it adds an extra layer of care into this already amazing film…
…and then Mulan 2 messed it up.
I love this!
The yin and Yang is from Taoism which didn’t really become a religion until the Tang Dynasty 600 years later. If Disney did their research they would not have used yin and Yang in this way.
