No one in today’s game would even THINK of trying what Gretzky executed at 29:30 with the Cup on the line in the final game of the playoffs. Truly spectacular.
This was Edmonton's second best team, even though they were voted as best ever. Their best in my opinion was the 1989-90 team. No one expected them to win and they beat some heft competition in Chicago and Boston. Both teams were expected to win the Cup. Neither did.
I'm watching this in 2022 December anyway I'm not too familiar with the Stanley cups finals so I. Watching them all on utube. I never knew the flyers were in this
1:53:38 & 1:54:59 That was an incorrect statement. According to NHL Records, there were many more penalty shots in the Stanley Cup Finals than what the guy said: Dave Poulin on Grant Fuhr in 1985 - no goal Ron Sutter on Grant Fuhr in 1985 - no goal The ones he mentioned: Frank Mahovlich on Tony Esposito in 1971 - no goal Virgil Johnson on Bill Durnan in 1944 - no goal Here are the ones he didn't mention: Alex Shibicky on Earl Robertson in 1937 - no goal Punch Broadbent on Hal Winkler in 1923 - no goal Duke Keats on Clint Benedict in 1923 - no goal Cy Denneny on Hal Winkler in 1923 - no goal Babe Dye on Hugh Lehman in 1922 - no goal
How did these Flyers get past the Nordiques? Always thought it odd that the Nords never made it to a final, what with Goulet and the Stastnys. Maybe poor goaltending? I like Pocklington at 1:10:46 sitting between the two hookers. Too bad Gretzky was his real ho. Ol' Puck is telling the one on his left about his KOLBASA ON A BUN. My Dad always said 'KOO-ba-SAW'. I thought he made that term up. I finally learn all this time later that other humans acknowledged such a sausage.
Lindbergh was outstanding in that series. The Flyers were first overall that year for a reason, balanced scoring and great defense and goaltending. The Nordiques also were getting into penalty trouble in a number of the games.
I'd give anything just to be able to skate like prime Paul Coffey. Defining "poetry in motion".
He was phenomenal. Absolutely blitz by anyone except for Mike Gartner.
85 Oilers greatest team ever
My Dad taped this game on BetaMax tape when I was 7, I watched it so many times and its what made me start playing hockey
Yeah, I did the same with the '84 Stanley Cup win that I recorded on VHS.

I'm watching this while also watching the 2021 NHL playoffs just to compare how the game has changed. Modern hockey is much faster.

The Flyers typically make the finals about every 10 yrs
The announcer keeps confusing Messier and Anderson. I guess he didn’t get the pre-game memo informing him that Anderson wears #9.

Hated NHL teams of the 1985 playoffs :
Boston Bruins. / Quebec Nordigues. / Chicago Blackhawks.
Philadelphia Flyers.
I wonder if they had cheesesteaks at the Philadelphia Spectrum?
Rest the big guns and let all the others play. The game is secure anyways.
You just do not do penalties against Oilers...Dammit !!!
NO ADVERTISING ON THE BOARDS. THE GOOD OLD DAYS.
Yes, very distracting!

The Nordique were never physical enough to endure long playoff runs
