I am getting back into CPAP therapy after being diagnosed 15 years ago. My biggest problem has been masks. Trying to find the right one and dealing with the over-inflated price's has been a challenge. What makes it worse is that some places will not let you return them if they don't work. So now you are out that money. I checked out your sponsor and noticed they will let you return the items "IF" they are unopened. Very disappointing for those of us that struggle with finding the right masks.

If the main danger of sleep apnea is low oxygen levels why not just wear an oxygen sensor that alerts you whenever your levels are low? All my cpap does is wake me up randomly throughout the night and destroy my rest....an o2 sensor would do the same and be far less annoying.

I realize this is an old video, but I recently began CPAP and I was feeling like doo-doo every morning. There have been small hiccups here and there but overall, I'm in much better shape *sleep wise* than I was for years before my SA diagnosis. I've tweaked my settings on my APAP machine to the point I think I've got the right settings for me. If you're having problems, don't give up! Another great video, LL! I've been on CPAP for two years. But I felt terrible - tired, confused, etc. "But your AHI is good," my neurologist told me. I tried different types of masks and nothing helped. My PCP recommended another MD who specializes in sleep medicine and she asked if I'd tried auto PAP ( I had been on a fixed pressure of 14). I hadn't. So she recalibrated my machine to APAP and voila - I started feeling better each day after. Then FoamGate happened and I had to switch machines - and another miracle happened - my AHI improved a lot after I got my new machine! So don't be satisfied when a medical professional tells you you're "fine" or "within acceptable range" when you feel terrible. Persevere and get some answers until you DO feel better!

Well, I finally got tired of having massive air leaks every single night. I had trouble sleeping through the night also. The noise I was making would wake up my wife almost every night so I had to get something done. I have been using the same mask for about 10 years (Mirage Activa LT) and yes, I was aware that my CPAP machine was reporting massive leaks, but I couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I finally bought some mouth tape and stared using that. It helped for awhile. I still was making noises at night and while still using the Mirage Activa LT mask, I was still getting mask leaks.
So, I finally decided to try a full face mask. I didn't like the idea of using one, but I thought I had to do something different. I bought an AirFit F20 and started using that. The first time I used this mask, I slept through the entire night and to my knowledge, didn't move a muscle! It was strange to go to sleep and then wake up and it's daylight! I checked my OSCAR readings and my mask leaks were just about gone. Then I found that there is an AirTouch F20 which has the softer foam cushions and that's what I'm using now. I have the medium mask and I think it's the right size.
Also, with some advice from Freecpapadvice.com, I change some settings on my BiPAP that hadn't been changed in 11 years! I lowered the pressure and now I sleep like a log all night through! It's just remarkable how much better I sleep with this full face mask. If you a reluctant to try one, I strongly suggest you give it a shot. I don't even use the mouth tape any more and I sleep as quietly as I have ever done and my wife is very appreciative of that fact. So, this thing with the CPAP is working for me and I'm 71 years old. Even an old guy can learn something new once in awhile! Good luck to everyone out there.

If I sleep on my back, my back issues (classic L4/L5 spine disc compression) wake me up. flip. flop. flip. flop. all. night. long. Thank you for establishing this RUclips! I was a RPSGT for fifteen years and, like you, had some patients who felt the difference immediately and loved CPAP/BIPAP. I always wanted to have the patient's studies, whether the initial study then secondary or a split night study, and show them the difference in their sleep patterns side by side. Allow them the "tangible" effect of seeing is believing. As you have mentioned, it doesn't always work for some, however, it does work for many. I also tried to explain to patients that PAP is a treatment and not a cure, as well, taking ownership of their health and once better sleep is attained, the patients could change their lifestyle; i.e. eating better, exercising, and enjoying life because the person feels so much better about life and themselves.

I gave up on cpap several years ago. I opted for a mandibular jaw advancement device ($2000), plus positional sleep treatment (i.e. a belt to prevent supine sleeping). The device was super painful to my jaw. I worked through the pain, but eventually discovered that my oxygen level was still very low at night. ( I have a pulse oximeter that records data writeable to OSCAR. Two years ago I was tested again. I began using CPAP in earnest, following another scary health issue. Watching your videos, Jason, has helped a lot with finding good masks, managing jaw drop, mouth leaks etc. If I didn’t have to pee and disconnect at night, I wouldn’t even be aware that I’m using a machine. My sleep is lovely now. It’s been a long journey through non-compliance, plain defiance, and discomfort to get to this point, and if I can do it, anyone can. I've had a lot of frustration over the years. Gave up completely once. I've been back on since February and finally settled on a 'mask' that works and is comfortable. Now I have pressure problems, occasionally. sometimes it's great and I can sleep through the night, other times the pressure is so high I just take it off. I feel like that's the last hurdle for me

I purchased an APAP machine with a nasal pillow on-line around 3 years ago. Prior to that, I recorded myself on a few occasions and wow...just scary how many apneic episodes i had. Went on-line without a prescription and on your recommendation, purchased a nasal pillow due to being a stomach sleeper. Settings: low side 5ppm's...high side 12ppm's. On the first night, I slept the entire night through, not getting up once to use the bathroom (2-3 occasions prior to APAP), and felt very good the entire day and every day since. I've since recorded myself and I've been quiet as a church mouse. I've watched videos of sleep studies, and I knew I wouldn't get an accurate reading because of my sleep position. Sleeping very well since..

Jason, I've been thinking about this a lot. There are any number of little tweaks I made based on your videos as well as Nick's, and all have made my CPAP experience better. But when I think about the one change that determined whether I was going to succeed or fail, it really boils down to one key moment, I think.
Some time ago, you said something that entirely changed my perspective, and I wish I could remember the exact wording, but it was something to the effect of, "Most people can become nose-breathers."
That seems like such a little thing, but I've been a life-long mouth breather, so the notion that I'd be able to get away with a nasal mask never would have occurred to me. And my first DME and sleep doctor both told me I'd never be able to use a nasal mask. But you forced me out of one mode of thinking into accepting other possibilities. And I honestly believe if I had kept on trucking trying to make a hybrid full-face mask work, I would have given up long before this point.

I didn’t have symptoms, just snoring. Wife made me get a sleep study. Had a score of 24. Tried the air pillow, it was awful my nose burned. I have a nose cover now, it’s better but honestly I hate it too. I’m exhausted all the time, it’s affecting my work, my time with the kids and has eliminated my sex drive. I hate the hose, I hate when I put it on like I’m on life support. I used to work out, now I’m too tired. I find myself needing to take naps during the work day. Everyone says keep doing it, but the only time I feel like I have enough sleep is the once a week where I take it off and get 4 hours. I appreciate that some had this positive life change but for me I’ve considered that divorce may be the only solution, because this thing is ruining my life. I completely understand why people give up. The last review said I had zero instances when using it, so I appear to be doing everything right but the numbers don’t reflect my reality. I’ve been using for over a month now but not sure how long I can keep this up. I took it off at 2 am last night and slept in the guest bedroom without it- that’s the best sleep I’ve had all month.

I’ve had my ResMed Air Curve VAuto for a month. I’ve only been able to fall asleep 3 times. I have no control over the settings for pressure, only the doctors office can adjust. It was set originally set at 22/16 with a 35 minute ramp because my second sleep study with therapy reported I needed that pressure to stop events. That was one of the most miserable, uncomfortable nights of my life. I still experience intense pressure from both the mask and the air when high pressure is reached. I take it off after 1 to 1.5 hours cuz I’m wide awake, the mask starts leaking at the slightest movement of my head and I can’t stop the leaks. I’m on my 3rd mask, the ResMed Airfit F20 and the machine is on Auto. It’s not looking good. I have over 30 events while wide awake. And I do feel worse with BiPap than I did before. I’ll give it a little more time. Unless they lower the pressure, I know this won’t work. What good is full face mask if I feel like I’m not getting enough air when I breathe through my mouth and can’t sleep. I know the answer.

I've been using my CPAP for 10 months and it has been a struggle from the wrong masks ,I'm on my 7th mask. I also changed my CPAP pressure from 4 to 18 that was first prescribed. When I used OSCAR , realized I will be better on a pressure of 9 to 14...95% of the time the pressure is between 12 and 13.54 when I looked at OSCAR. I always wake up during the night from a lot of events and they diagnosed me of suffering form severe chronic insomnia but I know I keep getting awake by my mask leaks or the sounds of the air(those masks with the tube attachment on top of the head)..10 months of struggle but I never not even for one night stop using my CPAP...Every nights it's different from choking one night or having a good night or having no leaks or some or just not sleeping at all...

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  2 года назад +4

If that's the case, try a steady pressure of 12 for a few nights, then 13 for a few nights. If you need a RAMP to get to sleep, go for it, but keep it short, like 10 minutes at most. Make sure the leak trend is also very flat. Sounds like you on that though!!!
My hunch is that this is more of a pressure problem than a mask problem....though masks could certainly be part of the problem!!!

I did fine with CPAP for several years. Post cancer treatments I had a more problems sleeping through the night. Trying to minimize issues I decided to get a new mask because mine was breaking down. Which needed a new script. Which meant doing the whole process all over again. And I didn't end up with a mask that worked. The equipment company just wanted to randomly try masks, which meant weeks of not sleeping well trying to adjust to the latest mask. No true effort on their part. And I kept getting air in my stomach, or at least that's what it felt like, so it probably wasn't the right pressure. Considering that taking yet another stab at it would have meant going through the same medical practice and same equipment supplier, I just didn't bother. Wish I had your caliber of professional in my area.

This video inspired me to try it out again so I set it up in my bedroom for tonight.

I have mild to moderate sleep apnea (15 obstructions) and I never suffered from sleep apnea symptom (except people said I snore really loud) I was never tired or anything until I got my CPAP machine. I’m sleeping during the day and I get 8 sometimes 9 hours a sleep at night.

I’m new to APAP. I get significantly less sleep in general with it, half as much REM sleep or less with it as compared to without it, and even less deep sleep than I was already getting. Still waking up 10-15 times a night. Can’t find a mask that fits/works. Have to shell out $100+ apiece on failure after failure while my compliance period ticks away.
I'm more or less stuck with it until late October because ✨compliance✨ is all they care about, not how well it’s working. Sleep medicine is garbage, at least where I live. They throw you on APAP with a massive range, give you two shots to find the right mask before you’re paying OOP, don’t check back in with you for like three months, and if you change your own settings during that time then they have a fit. The whole process is exhausting and miserable and nobody should be surprised that compliance is so low. It’s like having an extremely expensive, extremely uncomfortable, and wholly involuntary hobby thrust upon you with zero guidance and if you screw up, they kick you out of the club for not a) suffering silently through months of inadequate APAP treatment, or b) doing their jobs for them.
Oh, and I’m a stomach sleeper. Not a single person I’ve talked to during this whole process has comprehended that. It’s always “side sleeper” to them. I can’t sleep on my side. I can’t sleep on my back. And now I can’t sleep on my stomach because of the suffocating face hugger blowing my cheeks and ears out.
I didn’t think my sleep could get worse but fuck me if this torture device by my bed hasn’t made it happen.

On my 2nd unit, med 10 auto, I have had a full mask , nasal pillows and different straps . Today I am throwing the unit in the garbage. Two year trial is long enough. Most pillows are made of latex which can cause congestion.

I have been using my cpap machine for almost one year and realize now that the machine is actually inducing anxiety for me nightly. I could not figure this out until one night I fell asleep without the machine and actually woke up without any anxiety. It may work for some but for me it is the wrong therapy.

Been following you for awhile now and you have very helpful info. I've been on cpap for several years and recently switched suppliers and went to the airfit nasal mask and started having problems with mask leak. I tried different sizes and still had mask leak, finally went back to the dreamwear that I was using and problem solved. I believe it was the hard plastic connectors on the side of the nasal mask because the dreamwear doesn't have them. They were very uncomfortable for me. Just an FYI, love your channel

I’ve been using mine for only 6 nights and I feel infinitely worse. I’m physically struggling with the mask and tube and I’m experiencing much more episodes of fully waking up vs arousals in my sleep. I’m also in more physical pain because I’m having to accommodate my head and neck for the mask more. At least when before I used it, I was waking up at a normal hour so I could get to work on time.

I’ve been on a CPAP machine for over 20 years. The first 3-4 years were a struggle but after that I was getting really good sleep. I needed a new machine about 2 years ago and picked up a Dreamstation and aDreamwear gel nasal pillow. I just received my replacement Dreamstation 2 and I’m not sleeping as well…don’t know why…also they have discontinued the gel nasal pillow and the new version is terrible…I went out and bought a dozen gel pillows because the new nasal pillows are so bad….not very happy with Philips right now but from everything I’ve read the other manufacturers are just as bad!!! This is getting very frustrating.

CPAP/APAP impose breathing resistance, which some doctors consider inhumane. BiPAP is great, ASV is the bees knees. These actually make breathing easier.

Tried CPAP for the first time last night and loathed it. Felt all kinds of funky after 2 hrs. Pretty sure I have a deviated septum & have had it for a long time. I'm thinking getting surgery could potentially help my issues. I know a lot of the things I experienced last night will probably go away given time, but regardless I don't think I'll ever like it. Probably going to be change careers, because the job requires it.

After getting my Cpap 3 years ago. I can't sleep without it. As soon as I put my mask on I pass out. But I do have to admit I am a Paramedic and I have made some minor adjustments to my settings. My over all sleep has improved. My only problem now is Foam gate. My first device was a Dream station 1 and recently just received a Dream station 2 in the mail. But after hearing the news this week from the FDA, I'm ready to pay out of pocket for a new machine. Should Resmed be my next adventure?

ResMed or 3B Medical (BMC). With either one do not use any ozone cleaner. You can always open up your machine and remove the foam if you want. After stopping use of my Philips System One, I used a 3B Medical Luna APAP for 3 months before recently getting a ResMed AirSense 11 and switching to that. Both of these machines in my experience are good.
