I studied Art and Art History in the early 70's at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I wrote a final dissertation on Las Meninas. I studied this masterpiece for a month in Madrid and the Prado. I often visited the National Gallery when I lived in London. There is so much that could be said about the Rokeby Venus. I remember standing between Velazquez's portrait of Philip IV and the Rokeby Venus. Velazques had the almost impossible job of painting a flattering Portrait of Philip IV. There is not only the Habsburg “jaw” but also the almost putrefying skin. All that Habsburg in breeding probably brought that on. The contrast with the Rokeby Venus is extreme. The sensuality of the colour and paintwork is unbelievable.
I love the Rokeby Venus, I cannot understand how anyone can attack such a beautiful painting.😢. They really need to protect it with bullet proof glass against any more vandals.
"Heart rate goes up; ... hairs in the back of your neck stand up." I'm no art critic, but I have a feeling something outstanding is missing from his list of physical reactions.
I don't know who the guy is hosting the show, but he comes off as very snobbish and arrogant. There's nothing forgiving about his delivery. Maybe I'm too American to appreciate his rudeness.

Another superb documentary. Thank you Andrew.
I was at El Prado museum some time ago and was amazed, blown away by Velasquez masterpieces. He is certainly one of the great masters of all time❤
Then you have not seen much have you.

Diego’s first portrait of Philip IV killed. Just like a stand up nailing his very first appearance on Carson’s Tonight Show. I just love Valasque
Its critical to understand also that there was no photography at that time....which makes it even more remarkable.
Everything was going quite well until they addressed the topic of the Spanish inquisition and went full on black legend deceitful.
Marx’s point of view is still alive everywhere.
The video is very nice, but the was they said the name of the painter is wrong in spanish. The u between q and e, should not be pronounced.

Looks like borat😅
Thank you for the most detailed origin story I've seen yet on the Rokeby Venus… Hope to see it in person some day!
