Hi. Many thanks. This was the best comparison of kind of blue I‘ve every heard. And there are many of them on RUclips🙋♂️ I will start with the Mono Version from 2013. Cheers!
Awwwwww thanks so much for the kind words, appreciate it! Thanks for tuning in! Yes, the 2013 mono is fantastic … see if you can get the 60th anniversary box set with DVDs… they are quite nice and as a bonus you get a copy of the 3-2-mix down on blue vinyl, albeit a rather poor pressing… enjoy!
In the midst of the huge dollar UHQR craziness, I rewatched this video and quenched my FOMO by purchasing the *mono* version. Upon receipt, It took my ears a few minutes to adjust to the differences as, like many of us, I have the stereo (digital, gasp!!) version indelibly engrained into my psyche. BUT, the mono sounds excellent and is less than $30! Love that it's speed corrected. Great punch and dynamics. Definitely a must buy for the KOB fans that want a solid copy but aren't going drop a Benjamin+ on any one album. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!!!
@@SonicFlare i watch the vinyl and the audio vids and it will be cool that you will combine them. I have a bunch if the 2013 miles releases and for the money i think they sound damn good.
Great video and too can’t wait for the UHQR to arrive. I have a couple previous editions to include an original ‘59 six-eye Which I have framed and hangs behind me on my videos. I also have the 50th Anniversary edition which sounds pretty bad, but pretty. The MoFi 45 sounds pretty good.
Hey, congrats for your channel! Very nice addition to my favourite youtubers' list here. :) And, yes, I am no longer saying/typing "vinyls", thanks to you. :) Good luck on your venture as part of our favourites you tubers around here!
So glad you started a channel, Danny! Looking very much forward to receiving my UHQR copy of Kind of Blue. That’s awesome that you’ve got a real deal first 6 eye copy, especially in that condition. I loved the vid about the UHQR coming out soon. Thanks for your thoughts on this super popular title, Danny! Edit: I totally agree with you regarding mono pressings. Just look at the Beatles mono box set. It sounds phenomenal.
Thanks Danny. Now I dropped another $60 at Acoustic Sounds to go with my $100 last week. Oh well, three copies for me of this great album on vinyl, along with a CD and SACD. I think I'm covered now.
Hi Danny. What a fantastic kickoff. And to launch the channel with the subject matter "Kind of Blue", how freaking cool is that. Fabulous job on your maiden voyage and I really look forward to the next one.
Mono is killer. I wish it didn't have such an "old school" rap... There are so many amazing mono records that sound better than their stereo counterparts! Thanks for watching!
I'm subbing coz you love your OGs and admit that it cost you a pretty penny. These things do not fall outa trees! Looking forward to your future content.
Hi Danny - congrats on your first video!! I ordered the KOB on Chad's site that first morning it was available... took forever as we all blew up the Acoustic Sounds website.
Very nice Danny....got to check or buy this box set even though I do have the Classic records reissue from 1996 which is excellent and I did put my order of the UHQR set which I'm looking forward to it....and I do have the mono which is great !!!.....all the best......Ed in New York.....😎🗽🎵🎶🎵
It is interesting that there has been no mention on the distortion heard from the backing horns in the opening track (So What). I have this on a CD and recent 180 gram vinyl. Distortion is there on both formats. Could this have been from degrading master tapes? Interested in your take on this and what you may know that no one has picked up on (far as I know)... Thanks
Ha! hmmmmm I thought I covered it... the MFSL to me sits just below the Classic... A bit too much bass for me and slightly less bite and speed... otherwise, it's still in print and available!
I have the Mofi 45 rpm box,SACD,2013 RSD Mono record, and Columbia/Legacy 2 CD of this fantastic album. Was the Mofi 45 box sourced from analog tape? I've heard it was and that its from high fidelity files of the album. A little while back i saw an original six eye what the seller described as a reference copy on Ebay for three hundred dollars but passed it up since i have those 4 copies of the album i mentioned. Great video on this monumental album. Everything came together when the album was recorded.
Nice review and welcome! I have an original 6-eye, a 2-eye, Classic Records 1995 release (2 albums-Side A/B original speed, Side C corrected speed, side D alternate take of Flamenco Sketches), Classic Records Blue Vinyl from 2002 and the MoFi release and I did order the UHQR. Is it a sickness? LOL!
I compared several of the pressings you outline and preferred the mono from 2013, probably for the reasons you describe so well. As with much of this "sport" a good friend who sat next to me did not agree and held onto the Classic 33. There's no accounting for taste!
Just found out about this yesterday. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY wondering if I should buy both the 33 and 45 versions just to be safe. Assuming there's anymore 33's left to order.
One of the most comprehensive Miles Davis Kind of Blue review with so many releases and the comparison is much appreciated. After 10+ yrs of hiatus, I got back into vinyl due to the pandemic lock down. Vinyl gave me some inspiration and sanity while being locked up at home during COVID, and boy I am glad I got back into vinyl just in time for this UHQR release. Pre-order confirmed. Thanks for the great video.
Great to see you launching your own channel!. I ordered my UHQR Kind of Blue a couple days after the announcement, so I guess I won't be getting the first batch, also, since I live in Chile, i had to figure out the best way to get, since the direct shipping from Acoustic Sounds is super expensive). Personally, I love mono, to me, when it comes to jazz, i almost always prefer mono up until 1960 at least (unless it's a Rudy Van Gelder album, or maybe a Columbia like Time Out), and if we're talking about soul, pop or rock, i extend that until 1970, especially when engineers did the hard panning thing and left nothing in the center, which is quite common on pop/rock records of the 60s. I own the mono Kind Of Blue RSD, so the UHQR will be my first stereo copy. Lookin' forward to it! Cheers from Chile
glad that you have your own channel because i've been a follower everytime you show-up as guest on other channels. a bit confused though of your ranking in the end which got me interested but didn't quite get were the MOFI stack up vs the classic records vs the OG. look forward to a clearer ranking when the UHQR comes. more power to you danny.
Thanks so much! I suppose I could have fleshed out the MoFi a bit more... to me it's a bit too flubby in the bass, they goosed it a bit much. The Classic is more neutral sounding and open so the Classic, for now, is the best... Although there is a certain sense of air around a mint original that none of the reissues quite reach, then again, the tapes where 63 years younger too!
Hey Danny ! Great video on such an instrumental recording from both a musical and audiophile stand point. I Agree with you , Classic Records is the best to date . Will be interesting to see if Chad tops it and even more interesting how much improvement will we get from the UHQR 45rpm when he releases that. Now regarding mono Vs stereo I think is an album by album decision. I read Joe Harley as Ron Ranbach from MMJ decided to use Mono Blue Train as they felt a train literally could go through the center of the soundstage on the stereo version. I got the MMJ SRX and Haven’t got a descent stereo version to see if I agree with him or not, maybe you have one and could comment on the accuracy of that statement. Keep them coming !
Thank you! Agreed... Classic all the way. I think the vinyl formula of UHQR plus the hand press via the Finebilt should deliver substantial improvements I would wager. Agree on the mono - it definitely is a title by title sort of thing... although, to be frank, Roger, I sometimes play monos all day long and don't miss a thing........ hmmmmmmmmm... Thanks for watching!!!
Very well done. 100% agree that the mono version blow you away and is much more smooth and direct. Like you of course I own several stereo versions as well, and can’t wait receiving the AP UHQR version. Btw on the videos it looks like your (wonderful) speakers standing near to your records.
Something I've rarely heard discussed, but has anyone ever noticed the flaws in the KOB recording? Specifically the distortion (and of course the soundstaging, but I think we've grown to accept that issue for recordings in that era.) At this point I am used to most of the problems on the album to the point of overlooking them, and while it does not keep me from enjoying one the greatest albums ever, it does keep me from wanting to invest an an uber-expensive copy of the album.
@@SonicFlare What's cooking is this channel: straight fire so far! Keep up the great work. You even have OG 45 RPM Michael jealous about your lighting. 😆🤣 BTW, solid suggestion on the Dadisi Komolafe LP. Great music, great recording, great pressing. Thanks!
Not sure if this has already been posted, but this is the version I have. It wasn't on your list. Some people have problems on side 2, but my copy doesn't. Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue Url: www.discogs.com/Miles-Davis-Kind-Of-Blue/release/12656600
@@SonicFlare my guess is it is some sort of digital copy. I've looked all over trying to figure it out. But for the price it is a good copy and it looks fabulous. Just have to get a copy without the B-side distortion issues. You have to get it to keep the collection going.
Analogue Productions really gotta get their hands on Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Like imagine the shear hype that would surround Analogue Productions pressed version Dark Side of the Moon or Physical Graffiti.
@@victorsthought But does Page really need the money? The release in 2014 took Page months and months to sort through (according to articles I read). That's 7 years ago for a pretty old guy ... and a pretty rich guy. Why would he do it again? The second option is that Page and Zeppelin give the tapes over to AP or some other company for them to do all the work (and take all the credit if it goes well). Why would they do that? They have an incredible legacy and if they want this they would it themselves. Don't see it happening. So I won't say never. Let's say probability is
@@hemantishwaran5741 I think LZ has a good chance of going through. First off, none of these artists "need" the money. That's never what these reissue series have been about. Second, Chad already has the metal parts for LZ records so he doesn't need the master tapes. Thirdly, when Page put out the remasters 7 years ago and he said "the best remasters ever!!", do you actually think he believed that or he said that as a pitch to sell the records? I'm nearly sure that was a sales quote not his actual belief. Don't believe the hype that Jimmy is some hard headed hermit cursing any other remaster than his own. He knows the 2014 series can't stay in print forever and I'm sure he doesn't want to be in charge of another remaster series.
Danny welcome to the VC love you setup rig . This was an amazing breakdown of Kknf of Blue you have some killer different pressings that OG looks very pristine definitely going to sub and watch your episodes brother take care . Lovellandrew
hey Ray, thanks for tuning in... it's a little more difficult to track down the provenance of CD masters unless they are some fancy reissue. That said, if you can find the 50th anniversary CD of KOB, it uses the same 3/2 new stereo mix that Mark Wilder ran in 97, so that should be a good start for you and I doubt it's expensive. Other than that, it's trial and error as there are so many CD versions of KOB out there... hope this helps.
@@SonicFlare I have to take a moment to thank you for the recommendation. I got the 50th anniversary CD box set - 2 CD's, 1 DVD, and book - I would have gotten back to you sooner, but I haven't been able to stop listening - WOW ! Mixed from the 3 track master to 2 channel by Mark Wilder in '97. You have to love it. - Ray
@@SonicFlare That's strange because I have both 95 and 97 pressings from Classic records. Both have the corrected speed on side B. And they both sound very similar. Wonder what the source is on the 95 reissue.
Just my preference, but I ened up preferring a vintage copy that I found of Kind Of Blue (1A/1AE lacquers) over the Classic 45/4 sided version (wrong speed and all). Others will of course have different opinions.
Which version do you recommend - the Legacy Stereo or Mono? (I know you said your preference is Mono...but since the tapes are no longer available, do you have a preference here?)
hard to say....... I prefer the mono since you don't have that massive hard left/right pan "stereo" image... instead, you get the mono layering effect... then again, the stereo has that feeling somehow being there. Tough call really. Both! 👍🏻
Bro, obviously a great video, thanks mate! BUT... I don't think you said anything about the MFSL 2-45. You mention it as one of the versions, and then you never talk about the sound quality. THAT was the one I really wanted to hear about. VERY odd that you seemed to completely forget about it...
Danny, -- You emphasize several times that Kind of Blue is the best selling jazz album of all time. Well, it may be, but it depends on what source(s) you reference. I've read and heard just as often that Dave Brubeck's Time Out album is number 1 in sales. I'm not pulling for either one, but Time Out also had, if I'm not mistaken, a charting hit, with Take Five, which boosted album sales. Then again, KOB may have had more re-issues. --Anyway, both on Columbia, both released in '59. --Which one is really ahead at this point? I think it depends on who's doing the math.
This was excellent. I thought I knew quite a lot about "Kind of Blue" but your knowledge of the history taught me a lot. I have five copies of this album, the best being the MoFi 45. I've been dragging my feet on buying yet another copy. But if I don't I know I'll regret it when it sells out. I better get it done. Thanks for doing this.
Great stuff Danny. At first I thought Chad already send you an early copy. That would’ve been wild. I always thought the A side had the speed issue? Also it only concerns the stereo version, the mono runs at the correct speed. I didn’t know the tapes were gone.
The original mono tapes are sadly lost forever… so when they did the RSD version, they used the new, speed corrected 3 to 2 track stereo master for the mono mix…
@@SonicFlare that’s a shame. Not saying that I prefer monos in general, but as you said and it’s definitely true for early stereo releases, that the separation of both channels was pretty drastically. Monos provided a much nicer center image and in many cases it even extended to the illusion of a nice soundstage
Very interesting vid Danny...I would have the only known copy of Kind of Blue where side one is 16rpm (quadraphonic) and side two is (quintraphonic) 78rpm....sorry,not for sale!
I'm sure the anniversary edition was pressed at record industry in Holland they press all the music on vinyl records a hand written 5 digit number followed by a side ie a1
Got my uhqr 33rpm Miles Davis Kind of Blue and it has three loud pops at the end of side one and quite a few ticks throughout. I was hoping for 100 plus dollars I would not have to clean the album. My initial impression is the mobile Fidelity 45 RPM version sounds better. I know this is a 33 RPM vs 45 RPM but it cost $100 and should be superb. The mobile fidelity has better Bass and both seem to be equal with mid-range and treble. Not extremely impressed with this uhqr vinyl . Maybe that will change after I clean it. Sitting here listening to the pilgrim walking into the forest that I probably bought from Bandcamp for around 20 or $25 and the vinyl is dead silent with superb analog recording. Very silent!
At the end of the day it's a record... imperfect, flawed, full of potential issues. The one thing I do know is that AS has great customer service, so give them a shout and have them fix it for you!
MOFI 45 is pretty good. Don’t expect too much from the UHQR will probably sound flat like the other UHQR from Acoustic. The 45 to come from Acoustic might be the one though
@@SonicFlare Agree there's a bit of bass bloom. But it's still solid and sounds great and more importantly available and relatively cheap. I just purchased one from Mofi a few weeks back. The UHQR is over rated and more hype from the vinyl community. You think they don't have a vested interest in selling 25,000 copies at 100 bucks a pop? Ah, that's 2.5 million dollars for a *re-release* of a widely available album...
Thanks, Danny! At the end of that discussion with the Michaels, Bernie, and Gary, Chad sends a message to us all to save our money because something BIG is coming and Bernie is going to be doing it. So yeah...All aboard the poor boy express lol! Next stop, Brokeville lol!
PS: I really think the 2008 Sony KOB 50th anniversary is a fabulous release worth the price of admission for just the great session photos and bonus content... Killer!
Close your eyes. Think about Jimi Hendrix albums. Miles Davis albums. The two guys doing jam sessions together. Then open your eyes and realize that Miles burned the tapes of their jam together
@@SonicFlare So many have vinyl 'Shootouts'; yet fail to do the basics to make them fair. Would be interested to find out if the "Classic" had the best setup [including VTA], least warping, most centered, etc... Even if the shape of the stylus was the most beneficial to the "Classic"; doubt you used a mono stylus, let alone a mono cartridge, for the mono pressing [would be great if you did though]. Enjoy spreading the joy of wax, w/all its idiosyncrasies.
You took a deep dive right into the bottomless pit of audiophilia... haha... I get it. Here's the thing, it's very easy to get caught up with all that technical stuff. You mentioned VTA. Why stop at VTA? There's azimuth. Did I use an elliptical stylus? Was the cantilever boron or some other precious metal? How about the temperature of the coils, did I check those before playing? Was the record cleaned before? What was the humidity and air pressure like? Did I even use a cartridge that had coils, or did I use a light sensing photo diode powered cartridge, DS Audio? Which cables did I use? Etc. etc. etc. See how quickly this can escalate into the abyss? Setup your deck properly, or have someone who knows how to do it set it up for you... enjoy the music. Play a record. Life's too short. Re: mono, yes, I have a dedicated mono cartridge... I enjoy the toys that bring these records to life and give me an unforgettable experience... I am not in a laboratory environment, I am in my living room playing music... 😎 No doubt an episode in the making around this very topic.
@@SonicFlare That was my question when asking about "setup". If you used the mono cartridge that's definitely a plus. If all the "technical" stuff to make vinyl playback better is too much... don't do it, there's no Record Cops. Was just asking; you promoted it as a "shootout" so inquired about how level [pun intended] the 'playing field' was.
The only downside of UHQR is, that it's a lot harder to tell whether a record needs cleaning ^^ EDIT And did I spot a CD tower behind Danny in the gap between the speaker and the records? :P
CDs!!! Yessir. I still buy them... there's a great number of very nice CDs to have... Thanks for watching! PS: re: UHQR cleaning... yes, good and valid point. I use a KL Audio ultra sonic at home and also send new and used records for a very deep clean to Perfect Vinyl Forever, Steve Evans...
In short, no. Not at all. One step is nothing new really, it’s a great new old marketing tool however. Is a one step superior to a regular record? All other things being equal, perhaps. One thing that I ask myself is just how many times they rerun the tape to cut the record … remember for them to do 20k one steps, they likely need to do 20-40 runs. So what’s that all mean Basil… well, depends. At any event, I don’t think that UHQR, based on the fact that Chad shows you the actually copy of the tape used, is losing out on one step… let’s see what the KOB will sound like!!! Exciting!!!
Hmm, must be an amazing record. Never heard so many superlative words, cool words, meaningless names and pointless words in 18:35 time. So much that I started to wonder why? Disappointment will be inevitable if I will purchase it. How a reviewer can screw up something beautiful..... phenomenal amazing over the top thrilling massive great unheard fantastic
I like this guy. Very charming. I have the 50th box. The interview section of the DVD has aged badly due to it's inclusion of Bill Cosby. Really kind of icky to watch. The book is the highlight. Although I also had some of the 12 x 8 photos framed. Made a nice KOB triptych in my kitchen. Blue vinyl is kind of noisy on my copy.
The 50th box, lol. Aside from doing AS favour to shift the remainder, hell no. For the book /poster/prints perhaps, a lovely set. but certainly not for the pressing which was extremely poor and exceptionally noisy. Not the cut,, the pressing. No “audiophile” nor serious MF would recommend it with credibility. That pressing was a disaster. also worth pointing out that not all classic records are as good as others. Especially the original 200g 33rpm non clarity was plagued with problems. If you get a good one it’s GREAT, but you may go thru three or four noisy pressings to find that. Of course the UHQR we hope and can trust to not have this problem. Wilder “discovered “ the speed issue (that musicians everywhere had known for decades) and it first was “corrected” in 94 on CD Also, it was only the stereo that had the speed issue, so there’s plenty of earlier versions, just not stereo. You really should have mentioned, even if you don’t have it, the current in print Sony legacy release which is far greater sound than the box for a fraction of the price. A much better option than the 50th box aside the goodies. Looking forward to more vids
Book, poster and prints are all great!!! You don't know what you don't know until someone tells you otherwise... someone who doesn't have any of the superior pressings on hand or has heard them, would think the 50th anniversary sounds fantastic... perspective is the mother of all clarity 😎 Not surprised the Sony Legacy disc sounds great, now and then they do make good CDs!
@@SonicFlare well, if they got one of the thousands of noisy ones, they would know, because they’d hear it. Just like all the customers who complained about it back when it was released. At any rate it is a steal at $60 for the goodies and we’ll worth for them. Just be sure to budget another £20 for a decent record!
@@harbars1 you’d be surprised how many people - normal folks who just heard of vinyl - think that noisy vinyl is perfectly normal… perspective is the mother of all clarity.
I wouldn’t be, and am not surprised at all mate. It’s often as obvious as the clouds in Edinburgh! it’s also fair to say that even the newest of newb doesn’t dig non fill, especially if they’ve heard the same tune elsewhere (shudder, streaming!) 🙂. Sometimes “perspective” isn’t ignorance! Especially when when talking about the intro of the first track of this album which they’ve already heard in dozens of films without knowing it. At the same time, you are of course right that for those who don’t know, or haven’t yet heard differently it will still sound great - because KoB is fucking great, even on a shitty AM car radio.
You did it Man .. so cool ... welcome to the club!!!!

Thanks
Great video! You skipped MFSL double 45 in rankings. How would you compare it to others ?
Ha! hmmmmm I thought I covered it... the MFSL to me sits just below the Classic... A bit too much bass for me and slightly less bite and speed... otherwise, it's still in print and available!
I just wanted to be the first commenting your channel! - Looking good!
I appreciate that very much, thank you!
Yes, the MoFi uses the same master as the 50th anniversary, which is sourced from a dub off the 3-track tape Mark Wilder did in 2003...

@@SonicFlare ...Dangit. Now I gotta pre-order assuming I still can.

Cheers Steven, thanks for tuning in!!! More to come!
Love it!
glad that you have your own channel because i've been a follower everytime you show-up as guest on other channels. a bit confused though of your ranking in the end which got me interested but didn't quite get were the MOFI stack up vs the classic records vs the OG. look forward to a clearer ranking when the UHQR comes. more power to you danny.
Thank you! Yes, mono is awesome... got into it a couple of years ago... Room tour coming up soon................. 🤘🏻🤣😎
Sony Japan recently released two versions Stereo & Mono. Both are very good. I think you missed those editions
Terry! What’s cooking! Thanks for joining! Eh, issues abound on these old records… I listen past them…

Can you recommend a best CD - I don't play vinyl, but want this album on CD - can you help with a recommendation? There are so many versions
hey Ray, thanks for tuning in... it's a little more difficult to track down the provenance of CD masters unless they are some fancy reissue.
- Ray

Haha, thanks bro! Cool as a cucumber.
On Discogs, there is a 1995 pressing of Kind of Blue also by Classic records. Is that also from the 3 track tapes? Does anyone know for sure?
doubt it, they didn’t cut the record until January 97… not sure where that’s from.
@@SonicFlare That's strange because I have both 95 and 97 pressings from Classic records. Both have the corrected speed on side B. And they both sound very similar. Wonder what the source is on the 95 reissue.

Welcome from Italy😀
Ciao Ivan, mille grazie, per aver guaradato mio video.......
Just my preference, but I ened up preferring a vintage copy that I found of Kind Of Blue (1A/1AE lacquers) over the Classic 45/4 sided version (wrong speed and all). Others will of course have different opinions.
OGs, when you have a super copy, are superb!
Right. If you take a look at the Miles Davis KOB shoot out video, you’ll hear me discuss it. It sucks.
Take Five is certainly up there in sales numbers!
Buy now......... or cry later......... haha Thanks for watching!!!
@@SonicFlare Yep - just did. I feel better already.

Absolutely!
The 45 to come from Acoustic might be the one though
to me the MoFi has too much bass, sounds too flubby.

So many have vinyl 'Shootouts'; yet fail to do the basics to make them fair.

62 years old this year. Think music on vinyl do a correct speed.
interesting, not surprised, they likely were given the digital file Wilder made from the last 3-track transfer...
Do you think analogue productions are missing a trick not doing Uhqr in one step.
Exciting!!!
Yip pitty the didn’t do a run of 45s at the same time.
Well… one day at a time! It’ll get here…….
Hmm, must be an amazing record. Never heard so many superlative words, cool words, meaningless names and pointless words in 18:35 time. So much that I started to wonder why? Made a nice KOB triptych in my kitchen.
Blue vinyl is kind of noisy on my copy.

Glad to see you have your own channel. Non-music question for ya: Who makes your glasses?
ha! Thanks Jeff... Barton Perreira 🤘🏻
Wilder “discovered “ the speed issue (that musicians everywhere had known for decades) and it first was “corrected” in 94 on CD
Also, it was only the stereo that had the speed issue, so there’s plenty of earlier versions, just not stereo.
