Kenny, the whole reason a lot of us click onto these channels is because we’re trying to learn about music that either we were too young to know or weren’t born yet. The beautiful thing about RUclips is if you want to get musically curious you can get on here and dabble in things that you weren’t exposed to when you just had radio. We appreciate individuals such as yourself who are knowledgeable and those of us who are probably your same age who want to expand our musical horizons. Thank you for all that you do you’re a sage and for those of us out here your wisdom is the whole reason were even on RUclips at times to seek out musical advice and find out what we missed.

My father, who is 91 and not doing well today, was a jazz enthusiast. In our home, especially in the 60s, we listened to Miles, Parker, Clifford Brown, Brubeck, Bill Evans, Coltrane, Monk, etc. But I recall an album by Joe Henderson, "OUR THING," 1963.
    Nice going Kenny! Thank you!

Interesting choice for underrated jazz record. Great choice. It won an Oscar that year and very controversial I must say. It beat out Ennio Morricone for his score of the Roland Joffe/Robert Deniro film The Misson.

I recall that the movie “Round Midnight” when it came out. It got TWO THUMBS UP from Siskel & Ebert
      ruclips.net/video/D9owNd8iIRo/видео.html
Gene Siskel was correct, it was a bridge/stepping stone into artistry of other musicians from what I call the classical jazz period ‘Bebop’ - Ben Webster and Stanley Turrentine. It was the 80s and back then Jazz was very contemporary 70s-80s. This movie made you appreciate more of 50-60s sound of Jazz.
      Nice channel. Liked and subscribed

I cannot forget the ladies that charmed us with their sounds(Eiia, Dinah, Nina, Carman, etc.) One of my favorite albums is "Money Jungle". The fabulous trio consisted of Duke Ellington, Max Roach,
and Charlie Mingus. I got to see the Duke and Mingus before they left us.

Larry Young - Unity right now is my most underrated jazz album. Fantastic playing. Woody Shaw is extremely on point in this album and it's at a peculiar place between hard bop and almost free jazz.

Thanks for a great video. You mentioned "Let's get lost" - well, the soundtrack to that movie might be my favorite jazz album of all time, or at least in the top 10 so that might actually ironically be my pick for the most underrated jazz album of all time :) I highly recommend it to anyone who's as moved as I am to hear Chet Baker at his best - which for me is at his old age. It's just incredible. One of the most beautiful and poetic albums you will hear in your life ! Pure beauty and emotion.

What an impressive album collection he has-and the equipment he listed...this stuff use to be so easily and readily available in stores going back just 20-25 years ago-now you can't find a one of these anywhere; even online it's hard to find what you're looking for(if you're familiar with hi-fi equipment)-and even then, it'll cost you an arm and a leg, which was not the case when this stuff was available to purchase in stores years ago...
I miss the sound of real music booming from your system-with not just loudness, but clarity; could hear it when one was walking past one's house as the music was playing from their stereo system; I remember how Mary Wilson of The Supremes once said how back in the days, if peoples' stereo systems were tuned to the same radio station, you could hear the music IN STEREO, because as you were walking past their houses, on the one side of the street their radio or system would be tuned to a station while across the street or a few houses down you could hear the other person tuned to the same station-and it was like being in the middle of a live concert!
I remember those days...nowadays the music(if it can be called that)is BOOMING AND RATTLING, coming from this younger generations' cars; sounds like the paneling or doors are going to fall off from all of that rattling-it's that loud-and what is that doing to their ears? 8-23-24.

I've been at it for 45 years now & thanks to people like you, I continue to find new things that I didn't know even existed. "You don't know what you don't know". Unfortunately the masses have giant egos but lack one very rare quality, wisdom...happily quite the opposite of you Kenny. I can't believe Where Eagles Dare was your favorite movie, mine too. And it keeps you guessing right to the end! I would love to see you doing movie reviews. I will defiantly be checking out both the record & movie. seeing you highlight those two albums was kind of hard for me. I enjoyed them both. The movie was excellent also.

I love when people have best/favorite/most underrated lists that are different from my personal choices. It's a good way to either learn about artists I haven't heard of before or get a new perspective on artists I've slept on. People who only want to see content that validates everything they already feel are uninteresting bores. Respect for staying true to your own sense of taste.

Jean Carn is the lead vocalist. What a voice! Round Midnight is deftintely a hard bop album. The music is tight, well produced, not surprising considering the talent on the LP.

I guessed it right before you even showed the album! This recording changed my life forever. I was 12 years old and couldn’t believe the harmonies and textures throughout the entire work. Every note and nuance felt out of this world. Herbie's reharmonizations as well as every note played by all these masters is a masterpiece. It is one of the 6 most influential albums of my life.

Haha! I knew from when you mentioned Herb and Gordon at the beginning that you were going for the Round Midnight soundtrack. My fiance and I found it earlier this year and I couldn't agree more (although I have a different take on most underrated)--I unfortunately have not seen the movie yet, but the soundtrack is simply incredible.
I'll need to think more about most underrated, but one I might throw out there is Legrand Jazz. The line-up is similarly incredible and Legrand's composing/arranging is next level. It proves how right the French filmmakers Jacques Demy was to put Legrand's name side-by-side with Duke, Mingus, and Basie as one of the great conductors/composers.
Let me also say that I've been following your channel for a few months now. As a young brotha from Philly it means a lot to hear someone who sounds like they could be an uncle! Keep on keeping on Unc Kenny!

wow, you are a trove of information! love your channel! personally, i think popular music is going to swing back in the direction of jazz bc a lot of todays music isn’t very interesting to listen to in the way that jazz is. willow’s latest album, empathogen , is a great example. and she’s just 26. back in the day, dave brubeck said his take 5 album was proof that popular music could be interesting if songwriters/composers choose. in the meantime, i appreciate learning more about jazz music to better inform the music i’m writing. thank you, kenny!

Three things...one...it's unfortunate that because everyone is overly sensitive these days, that every time someone posts a list or a choice they have to set it up with either an apology or discussion on how we all have our own opinion. If people get offended by someones opinion they really have thin skin lol! Second... this is a great album, the only thing I wished is that they included the big band version of 'Chan's Song' (written by Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock) that is played in the film near its end. I love this film and you are correct...the personnel is unparalleled. Third...thanks again for another fantastic video Kenny my friend! Keep em' coming!

There's probably so many jazz albums that could be considered underrated simply because they didn't get the air time. That said, thanks for keeping the music alive Kenny. We need more "JazzPatriots" like you Kenny...Not underrated but still worth mentioning; Miles Davis, Porgy and Bess.

Hey Kenny. I saw Round Midnight in a theatre in Chicago when it was released. Dexter shone in that movie, despite (as I understand it at least) never having acted previously. To get the full impact of the soundtrack nothing beats the Criterion Collection blu-ray in surround. You're right: this is a great soundtrack album, and a great jazz album in its own rite. Favourite Dexter Gordon Lp: 'One Flight Up' (Blue Note Tone Poet).

Definitely a worthy consideration. I’ve been revisiting Yusef Lateef’s Eastern Sounds and have grown in my appreciation of all of the musician’s contributions and particularly the piano of Barry Harris. I’m struck by the sensitivity of some of the tracks. And Yusef’s ease of mastering several instruments to communicate the essence of each offering was a rare moment and gift to the art form. Thanks for your enthusiasm that lifts this art form as well.

What a great pick Kenny. Just pulled both LP’s off the shelf for a listen. Bought both when they came out. Need to see the movie again and may buy the Criterion Blu Ray as one of your viewer suggested. The movie is loosely based on the life of Charlie Parker but infused with a lot of Long Tall Dexter’s experience. I think Gordon may have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Thanks my friend, great vid!

If you gave me a few hours to make a list, I could come up with loads of underrated albums, but right off the bat the first one I can think of is Frank Strozier's 'Fantastic Frank Strozier' (VeeJay, 1960)
