Ok I’m going to be real honest because I’ve love RJ & TM for nearly 40 years! The backing singers have a frog amongst them. One of them is flat! The RJ impersonator is good. I wouldn’t mistake him for RJ but parts of his vocals are great and it’s at the bits that count... He does look weird tho (God forgive me) now TM... Intro on point! I think she’s on point! Come on you guys. They did a good job. We are losing iconic voices that can never be replaced and the industry remakes will never come close. These two are entertainers just wanted to entertain us. They did a great job. I was surprised when the young lady opened her pipes and started singing. She was much better than I expected. Nobody will ever sound like Teena, Aretha, Etta, Chaka, Gladys, etc... Remember, the difference between the music industry then and now is back then you had to have extreme talent with a very unique and strong voice. Today most singers, not all, sound like clones trying to out yell each other as an expression of vocal power. So, be happy that you experienced singers that sounded so original and so soulful. Be happy that they cannot be imitated to exact precision because that is what made them who they were. Just enjoy what these two did to try and take you back down memory lane. Give both of them their props for doing as well as they did. Be happy that she does not look and sound exactly like Teena. If she was able to do so Teena would not have been Teena.

Just a little insight on that night..not trying to make excuses for myself lol..but my mic was switched during a wardrobe change right before I came out for this song (which may be some of the reason why the background vocals sound off) one of the other girls had my mic...if you listen you can hear them slowly turn my mic up. I'll admit..i was a little flustered from it so didn't give my best performance but I had a great time regardless. The whole point of a tribute show is to keep great music alive...I know I dont come close to the great Teena but she is one of my biggest musical influences. My voice is actually the most natural when I sing her music (I mean I am named after her after all) so I only hope to make her proud..
