To the people complaining about radiation: "Fallout radiation decays relatively quickly with time. Most areas become fairly safe for travel and decontamination after three to five weeks." Thunderdome was supposed to happen 15-odd years after the actual nuclear "war" (unseen).
@@adrianlasin574 Maybe what you're referring to is what happens to radioactive carbon-14 in the atmosphere. Just like with carbon-12 (the nonradioactive isotope), carbon-14 combines with oxygen to form CO2. That CO2 is then absorbed by plants and the ocean in the same way that "regular" CO2 is. So exposure to atmospheric C14 could be less than what might be predicted based only on its half-life (5700 years) if it were incorporated into CO2 and then absorbed. In my mind that's not really CO2 "eliminating" radiation. The process I described above wouldn't offer protection from other sources of fallout, or from what might happen if you eat plants that are suddenly getting a richer dose of CO2 made from carbon-14 (or the animals that ate those plants). Not having the nuclear war in the first place is probably still the best choice.

honestly not that hard to imagine.. as an Australian.. anyone who has experienced apocalyptic fires and floods in recent times and anyone who is cognisant of nuke threats (Xi/Putin) won't have a hard time imagining it. There is already a food shortage after covid, brussel sprouts are selling for $15/kg ar the local supermarket which is nearly as expensive as meat There's about to be a global fuel crisis, global warming is causing arid conditions, drought is not uncommon, massive parts of Australia are already inhospitable desert, people go missing in the outback. It's a massive island basically in the middle of nowhere, it's going to be pretty hard to escape anywhere if you're not on a plane. i actually think one of the reasons this film is so resonant with Australians themselves is that actually, like a lot of effective SF, the idea of Australia growing more desert-like is not hard to imagine at all. And it's not too hard to imagine humanity growing more feral alongside such conditions. It's ultimately about finding ways to survive an environment that's hostile towards the sustenance of human life. And again, that's part of what Australia can really be like.
Air burst weapons leave very little radioactivity. The heat, the prompt gammas and the blast do the damage. There aren't that many neutrons to activate material and all the bomb residue goes up in the plume to land somewhere else.
