This is precisely why I love Gon's character, he's so different from basically every other protagonist, he's both innocent and not afraid to do morally questionable things that most characters would never even consider. I like to compare him to Deku just because they're visibly similar and both very "innocent." While the classic protagonist like Deku never wants to hurt anyone, respect his opponents, and be a true hero, Gon has none of those qualities, and will not hesitate to kill someone if they get in his way or threaten his goals. Incredible character design.

Alot of moments were missed from this video, on my rewatch I screenshotted every line of dialogue that hinted it. Even in his conversation with Meleoron Gon calls him human despite him being an Ant, and Meleoron responds by saying when I met you I had the opposite reaction, there's a beast inside of you, there's no limit to what you will do. The point is Gon is willing to throw all of his potential away at any moment, he was willing to die rather than surrender to Hanzo, when he was beat by hisoka he stayed up the entire night dreaming of revenge, and risked his Life to get a punch back, he risked his life with no solid knowledge of nen in heavens arena to prove himself, he risked his life walking into Canary over and over again to get through, he risked his life in the Phantom den by challenging them despite being told he would be killed if he would spoke again, he risked his life against Genthru he was literally willing to throw all of his potential away for a fight he didn't need to win, when Kite died he was willing to actually fight Pitou there and then knowing he would die, I have alot more examples. Gon is someone who has been ready to throw his life away every arc to be proven right, he is extremely selfish and says it himself, it just so happens he was lucky enough to survive that long.

Yes. At his core he is(well, he thinks he is)an innocent child. Most sociopaths and psychopaths actually don't end up being serial killers, but normal members of society with a twisted morality(more common for aspd though). Gon was a very sheltered kid. His morality isn't based off of how bad a person is, but how bad they are to him. He thinks with his heart and not his head, making decisions off of his feelings and not considering how it may effect others. This, of course, can definitely be fixed if you get help from a young age, so it's not completely hopeless. Even if it's not fixed, he's not a bad person. He's still happy and cares for the ones he loves. I believe his innocence is what makes him so likeable, but also so terrifying.

It was always there. It was just up to the audience to see it. People like Razor, Wing, Genthru etc. all called Gon a monster/beast/insane. Even from Genthru, who was nutty himself, being scared of Gon while he was STRONGER than Gon says a lot. Gon defeated him mentally. Then you also have Zepile who said it perfectly. You can't appraise Gon and that makes him dangerous. He's so pure in his thinking that he just follows whatever his gut tells him. Thats also why Gon could've become a great Hunter like his father, who keeps pushing his boundaries as well. There's also a reason why guys like Hisoka and Nobunaga took an interest in Gon. In different circumstances I don't see why Gon couldn't have been a Troupe member. Imagine him never meeting Kurapika and meeting the Troupe in a different setting. Lets say Gon met Nobunaga and Uvogin while they had a mutual enemy and they teamed up and formed a friendship. Why not? Gon even accepted Hisoka's help in Greed Island.

@@furtywelsh3482 eh, i disagree. Gon was heavily opposed to the troupe members killing people, an act he was not fond of, and its very unlikely he would join a group where he would have to commit said act himself. In the case of Killua, however, by the time him and Gon met, Killua seemed to have stopped his assassin work. Gon defnitely isnt the type to kill random people though, and would only join the troupe if he got something worthwhile out of it, which isnt likely.

the thing i love about how Gon is written, is that he’s completely supposed to be the “ying” to Killua’s “yang”. This never changes despite what you might think in the series. Gon is supposed to be the light, Killua the dark. but as you know with ying and yang, each has a little bit of the opposite with in them. Killua has a sweet protective side to him, hed do anything for Gon or to keep Gon safe, but ONLY Gon. It’s expressed many times that Killua really does not give a shit about anyone else as much as he does Gon. Killua also is in the opposite as he’s a trained assassin and can and will kill anyone. He’s even seen killing two hunter examinees for mf BUMPING INTO HIM-
but GON- Gon needs an absolute justifiable reason to kill you. Even if he has to make it up himself. As Gon is a very emotional person, and tries to view everyone equally at first, but the harsh realities of the hunter world change his perspective on the person. this is seen to be the opposite for killua, who was raised to see people if theyre beatable or not. Most if not all regular people, killua can beat/kill, so he has a certain arrogance to him in the beginning of the series, but as we get to really tough Nen users later on, killua has to go against his gaslighting family and take on unbeatable opponents anyways and most of the time he does it for Gon’s sake. A lot of Killua’s “good deeds” or breakthrough moments were for Gon.
But Gon’s breakthrough moments were always about someone else or for silly reasons, but his moments were next to nothing, because Gon is pretty stubborn about changing his way of thinking.
Togashi really wrote these two besties as complete opposites on almost every level. But the thing they have in common is that they care about each other. Like A Lot.
Yes Gon is a little unhinged, but he’s probably the best damn friend you could ask for and he’d go to the ends of the earth for you.

He KNEW that Kite was dead already and he wanted to end things right there, but he felt guilt because if he killed Pitou, he'd indirectly be killing Komugi. If the ant has feelings and is capable of helping people, then he'd essentially be in the wrong. So he let Pitou lie to him about saving Kite, he let Pitou try to attack him, and then he let her try to ambush him again, so that it would justify him brutally beating her to a pulp.

I was wondering why Gon said that. I get it now: he wanted to force Pitou to lie! that's exactly why the narrator said that separated sentence: "What Pitou chose to say was... the TRUTH" this is the reason Gon went mad after that because he couldn't get the "lie to face" excuse and he wasn't able to avenge Kait. And he kept saying "not fair" because it is not fair to not to able to find the needed excuse for destroying Pitou.
Do you remember what happened next? He stood up and said" TO HELL WITH THAT" did you get it? It means f@ck it I don't need the "lie to face" this time.
But Killua stopped him, right? What did Killua say?: "Gon, if you kill Pitou, WE'LL NEVER GET KAIT BACK"
Why do you think Gon calmed down after this sentence? Because he finds another way: what if I wait for Pitou and take her to Kait and THERE & THEN make her lie... that way I HAVE the excuse...so he says: "You're right Killua, I'm Okay now."

He has some grey areas morally but theres a lot of character/moral development that can come from him getting older. Gon is a kid and kids don’t always have good morals, they struggle with being selfish, and sometimes have skewed vision of their actions and their consequences. He was going through the stages of grief on an amplified level because of his emotions connection to his nen. • @tgoat93

Gon, just like his father Ging, is the perfect example of what a Hunter is: powerful, charismatic, and selfish. Gon comes off as selfless and friendly because he seems to not have any goals, but that's incorrect. His kindness comes from his age, but he's always only ever cared about challenging himself and putting his life at risk. That's one of the reasons why Netero, Ging, and Pariston all had such a personal and volatile relationship: they each saw the perfect Hunter in themselves and each other. Netero saw it in Gon too, which is why he became so interested in him in the first place

What I like about Gon is that he wasn't this self-righteous morally correct character. Sure he wasn't inherently evil, but his goal wasn't to save people like so many anime protagonists' (Naruto, Izuku, even Tanjiro) are. No, that was Leorio's goal. Gon was ambitious and served his own goals, but also wasn't an asshole to do it. He was still friendly and cheerful, but also followed his own agenda. That really makes him a very good main character

that is a great summary of what makes Gon such a great protagonist and HxH such a great series in general. the idea of a main character 100% moral and just is predictable and boring. I think a person from a few hundred years back would not feel so astounded at Gon's ways. We have like, 12-14 year olds experiencing war and killing firsthand, and bloodying their own hands. People needed to know how to hunt, trap, and kill to live. That degree of detachment was needed. You can't be bothered to moralize on every decision you make when pretty much everything other than your own family or tribe is out to kill you.
Plus, I think it is hypocritical to point out Gon being somehow morally inferior to us, as I think most people pretty much do the same thing, just in a different context. We care for our own, and not much for everyone else. Similar thing.

      and I mean
ESPECIALLY when there was clearly an alternative solution that didn't involve Killua's hands getting butchered.
I believe that was the most SELFISH Gon has ever been in the series.
(not to mention fully intending to kill Komugi, an innocent, fatally injured woman)
remember? one of the other characters offered to hold the ball in place of Killua so his hands wouldn't be too severely damaged....
      there was ANOTHER option....
an option that allowed his best friend to suffer LESS and STILL win the game yet Gon chose the option that ensured maximun damage to his best friend because he "can't hit at maximum force unless it's his best friend"
like dUde. Isn't it supposed to be the OPPOSITE???? Wouldn't you be hesitant to hurt your best friend, therefore you'd kick the ball LESS hard and not HARDER???????
smh I'm still salty over that and I already finished the series.
I wasn't really angry with Gon at the end when he left Killua behind... because it's hard for ANYONE to think straight when they're in a state of grief. It's clear gon regretted his actions afterwards. kinda same with Komugi...? his excuse could be that he wasn't thinking straight?

The Chimera Ant Arc did a really good job of showing how grief really works.
The thing about grief that a lot of people don't know is the five stages aren't linear. You can bounce between stages at any time and even experience multiple stages together. The worst moments are when you get stuck on a stage for a long period of time. It rips you apart and when someone or something forcefully pulls you out it rips you apart even more. People talk about how it feels like they're going insane trying to process grief, now imagine it in someone who's already mentally unhinged.
Gon gets locked into denial, occasionally switching to anger, but he's so hard set on denial that he starts to believe it. He wants to deny what's right in front of him because his mind can't handle the truth. This obviously makes things much worse. The denial makes him dissociate much more. You can see it in his eyes, the lights are on but nobody's home. At this point lying was the safest bet because telling the truth was considerably more dangerous.
Once Gon saw Kite was physically dead, there was no possible way to deny it anymore. He was quickly forced to reality. The other thing about grief is much like sleep, it accrues over time and eventually it catches up to you to be repayed in full all at once if you don't relieve it over time. Grief finally caught up to Gon seeing Kite's body. He experienced at five stages of grief at once and his unstable mind quickly shattered. All that was left was a primal desire to destroy whatever took Kite from him, whatever the cost.
Grief is fucking awful for anyone to deal with but in Gon's case it's especially heartbreaking.
