Here are some notes I've jotted down while researching repositioning cruises:
    - Repositioning cruises can cost: $30-100+ per person per day (need to be aware of base price + port fees +taxes + mandatory gratuities)
    - The cost includes: accommodations, food, transportation, entertainment (pools, bowling, shows, etc) , gym, all in one. Extra add-on costs include things like alcohol, wifi, etc.
    - Vacationstogo.com is a great resource to find the cruise deals. To book a cruise, you will need to call them on the phone. When you call, they will ask if you want upgrades but you can politely decline if you don't want to pay more.
    - Wi-Fi is infamous for being very slow and pricey on cruise ships. They will sometimes block certain sites and apps like RUclips and Netflix as well as restrict use of VPNs (like Surfshark: surfshark.club/friend/PwFCfFD5). If you are really tech savvy you might have workarounds - if you do, let us know in the comments!
    - You can find great cruise deals on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Singles Day in Asia (November 11). Set calendar reminders now!
    - Pros for cruises compared to flying: Avoid long travel day and jet jag so you can travel slow and arrive fresh. They have great food options and you can enjoy the stops at various ports.
    - Cons of cruises: potentially bad weather depending on time of year at the ports, repositioning cruise may not in peak season (but this saves money!), add-ons can be expensive: Wifi can cost $30+ per day and I saw that laundry can be $29/load on Norwegian cruises.
    - You will need transportation from the port city to your final destination.
    - It's always good to compare flights vs cruise costs. The value and experience of a cruise might just be worth it!
    - Cruises have Moose Juice. Enough said.

You overlooked a couple details. Mainly that the base fare is per person, double occupancy. The taxes and fees add $202.83 per person, and the daily gratuity fee adds another $224 per person. So that $489 fare is really $1404.83 for one person or $1831.66 for two people. Also that price is for a "guaranteed" inside cabin. The scare quotes are intentional as cruise lines often overbook, and without a cabin number, you might arrive at the pier to discover they don't have a cabin for you. So pay a bit more to get a cabin number assigned when you book. Another risk is that you'll get a cabin underneath a nightclub or a pool and find it very noisy at all hours. Do you want a porthole? That costs more. A picture window,? More still. A balcony? You get the idea.
Also consider that over the course of 14 days, 8 of which will be at sea, you may find yourself looking for something to do. While there are many free activities such as sunbathing, swimming, a gym, trivia games, movies, music, and live entertainment in the theater, as well as a free buffet and some sit down restaurants; there's a lot of things which cost extra, most notably the casino, spa, classes, shore excursions, shopping, premium restaurants, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, and sodas to name a few. It is possible to not spend an extra dime while onboard, but on average, cruisers tend to spend as much onboard as they paid for the cruise in the first place.
Cruising does have its advantages for vacationing such as only having to unpack once while visiting several places, and having the basics all included in the price. As a means of traveling from point A to point B though, you'll probably find a better rate on a first or business class plane ticket.

I've done a 5, 11, and 14 night reposition cruise, with a 13 night Vancouver to Japan coming up. You'll get an older crowd on any longer cruise, especially reposition. There may be a few status snobs on board, and some 7 day Carnival fans don't enjoy 14 night as much (especially halfway through). They added 30 min enrichment talks to our Journey cruise, and a retro 80's day. You don't really need a window or veranda, but they do make sense in Alaska, Chile, Norway, etc. Now that we're starting to head out international, Oneworld Alliance is something I'm glad to jump into as former Delta loyalists.

Thanks for sharing your insights! I don’t think I’d mind being around the older crowd, it seems like most people that take cruises would enjoy talking about traveling and sharing stories. I’ll have to keep an eye on the Trans-Pacific routes to Asia- I hope your cruise to Japan goes well :)
