This video reveals my minimalist travel secrets that have served me well while visiting 30+ countries around the world. It’s a beautiful thing to never have wait at the baggage claim or worry about lost luggage. One-bag travel is perfect for space-conscious adventurers but even if you have to pack slightly more, there's no shame. Hopefully you pick up a tip or two while preparing for your next trip! Let me know in the comments!
(Note: some of the gear in the video is a slightly different model than the product links in the Ultimate Gear List, but rest assured the concept and value is the same. For example, my backpack has lasted so long that North Face has since changed the look of it's Borealis backpack. If anything, the new models should be even better!)

*What are the carry-on size limits?*
Carry-on bag size and weigh limits vary by airline. Some budget airlines are really stingy (Frontier, Ryanair, etc.) while others are more lenient.
    - Max carry-on size limits vary, but a general guideline is somewhere around 22 inches X 14 inches X 9 inches (56cm X 36cm X 23cm)
    - Max carry-on weigh limits vary anywhere from 10 to 35 pounds (22 to 15.9 kg)
    *What about Personal Items?*
Typically you are usually entitled to one personal item in addition to your carry-on bag. The personal item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. This includes things like a laptop bag, purse, etc. Larger bags, including suitcases that fit in the overhead bin compartment, are labeled as a carry-on item. My backpack would be considered a personal item in most cases! Check the carry-on and personal item limits for the airline you will be flying with. If you have multiple flights with different airlines on a single trip, be mindful of the airline with the most strict restrictions.
*What if my bag is bigger than the one in this video?*
You can absolutely use a bigger bag than the one I show in this video (mine is 28 Liters) but the most important thing is to pass the "eye test".
If you bag looks large and heavy, the airline workers might ask to weigh it or measure it. Look relaxed and make it seem like your bag is light on your shoulders, even if it isn't!
If you are worried airline workers might ask to weigh it or measure your bag, face them directly while checking in and boarding so you hide your bag and they can't see the side profile.
You can also put heavy items into your pockets to avoid weigh restrictions.
    Hope this is helpful! Cheers!

Carry on side limits very from airline to airline so you should check with the airline you have booked with and if you have a change of flight which is also a change of airlines like I fly to New York on JetBlue and then fly to Europe on a European airline, they have different standards so you must comply with both. Smaller is always better. There are ways to get around that buy something simple in the airport shop and then load that thing up with a bunch of crap from home that may be you tied around your waist, like sweatshirts and bulky things like that. The airlines let you bring on any bag where you bought stuff in the airport, this is in addition to your regular bags.

True! Buying your souvenirs in the airport right before you leave is a way to get around baggage limits if your bags are full before you get to the airport. Most every airport has really nice souvenir shops that you can buy nice things, although with that convenience it might at a slightly higher premium.

Post it notes, just a few: covers the peep hole in hotels, acts like a lint brush, reminders for the next day on the mirror so I can sleep not worrying I’ll forget. Also a couple binder clips: pulls curtains together that last inch to keep light out makes backpack into a compression bag kind of to keep stuff distributed and not a pile at the bottom. I move 1 binder clip from the inside of my bag to the outside each time I take a cord out to “keep score” that I put all of them back in and didn’t leave one behind the bed because that was were the stupid outlet was. Learn how to fold a basket from a piece of paper, I empty my pockets into that at night to not lose things. I’m not someone who normally eats a meal replacement bar, but I keep one in my bag and have been so glad I had it when flights changed and concession stands were closed.

Pants hangers with the clips in the hotel closet can also be used to keep those curtains together.

I use a large ziplock bag for dirty clothing. It keeps smells contained and by adding water & soap you can wash clothing in the bag, then hang to dry.

Nice and simple. Just a couple things I noticed you were missing I think would be essential are a rain jacket, hat, hoodie/sweater and flip flops. Unless you will be wearing

100% I totally forgot to add my jacket and sandals in the video! 😭
In terms of jackets, I typically wear a lightweight The North Face jacket. It's high quality and can pass for business casual, especially if it's black. Even though it's not technically a rain jacket or "waterproof", I find that these jackets do a pretty good job at wicking away moisture. I'll strap it to the stretchy cords on my backpack while not wearing it. In case of huge downpours, I might consider buying a cheap umbrellas or disposable plastic poncho in my destination.
      North Face Jacket: amzn.to/3SMYly4
For sandals, I like minimalistic lightweight sandals that you can hike in if necessary. A brand called Luna makes some minimalistic hiking sandals that have great reviews. I normally like wearing athletic shoes but I like putting a pair of sandals like this at the bottom of my bag because they don't take up much room.
A RUclips channel I enjoy is One Pack Wanderers and they make a great video of hiking in Japan in Luna sandals:

Most airlines even today still allow you to bring a carry-on with you (with a few exceptions) at no extra charge ( by carry-on I mean a bag that can go in the overhead bin). Only a few limit you to just a "personal item" (backpack) before you pay fees. Most people I think can probably pack enough for 1 week
into a traditional carry-on bag if they are willing to do atleast one load of laundry during their trip.
Second, many people may just opt to pay the bag fee for a traditional carry-on as $35 or even $50 each way may be seen as worth it, considering it might take you 90 minutes to 2 hours to do a load of laundry at a facility and that time could be spent doing something else OR where they are going maybe doesn't have free laundry and they must go somewhere and pay a few dollars, plus the time, when they could have either just bought a traditional carry-on for a small fee or in many cases, no additional charge and avoid the laundry thing alltogether. If I was going away for maybe 3 days and I could rewear my pants for all 3 days then I might be inclined to skip the traditional carry-on as I can easily pack a shirt, underwear and socks for 3 days into a backpack, along with some other things, maybe even a spare pare of pants, but if it's more than 3 days them I'm just going to probably bring a regular carry-on bag even if it means paying $30 extra (mainly for convenience) because I'm convinced that trying to avoid paying thre small fees doesn't really pan out in the end, and what you save in the fee, you waste in time spent doing something you could have avoided.
Now if you're maybe going hiking for a week, then that's different because you don't want to be lugging around a rolling carry-on bag, but for most trips for most people, it's worth it to pay the small fee or in many cases, there is no additional charge for a traditional carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin, and if anything, you can bring both (a personal item -- backpack -- and a regular carry-on bag). If I do that, I could easily do a 4-5 day trip probably without the need for a checked bag, which is my ultimate goal--carry-on I can deal with).

Great insights! For some people, checking a bag or using a rolling carry-on bags would totally make sense. Thanks for sharing.

Do you wear some of those clothes while traveling or have a travel wardrobe? That would get you a few more days. Would be great if you would have packed it and weighed it to show how it all went together. But, great info!!

      @The_NomadNinja  2 месяца назад +2

Yes, the outfit I wear on travel days is one less outfit to pack! My travel wardrobe is typically the same thing I wear every other day so it makes it easy. Great idea about actually packing the items and weighing them... maybe a future video!

A few things here, most people aren't going to waste time while they're on vacation doing laundry when they could just bring a little bigger bag and enough clothes. If you're staying for a few weeks or a month maybe you can do laundry somewhere but most people that are just traveling for a week... No, also they're going to not bring these teeny little bottles of things that need to be refilled at the hotel with some kind of shampoo or cleaner that they don't normally use, people have sensitive skin and people have products that they're used to... Also people probably don't want to wear the same clothes everyday no matter where whether the place that they eat out at is nice or if it's just a casual place... You're not going to wear the same shoes the whole time, particularly if you go to like to a beach area or some mountainous area where you would need some hiking boots, you don't want to wear the hiking boots around the hotel or wherever you're staying, you want to get more comfortable. One bag travel is possible for a short trips and places where you can make all of these trade-offs, just a casual trip you're not going to have to look nice for any reason, it's not cold or hot and you're not going to the beach so you can just wear your tennis shoes...

Thanks for your perspective! My take on travel is admittedly abnormal and I would agree that your perspective is definitely more reasonable for the majority of travelers. Minimalistic, one-bag travel isn't for everyone, but it offers freedom and convenience for some. I love seeing different packing approaches, even if they differ from mine. It sparks ideas and helps me refine my own packing strategies for future trips. Happy travels!
