      The mechanism of a lightning rod is well established. You need an aluminum mast and hull. Yes, aluminum boats are natural lightning rods. Fiberglass is a no-go.

    As someone that has spent the majority of their working life in the lightning protection & surge protection industry (over 30 years) I just want to add a little technical perspective. 1) It's not possible to attract lightning and people should be very wary of any person, company or product claiming that they can. 2) Lightning is only ever looking for a quick and direct path to earth, strikes to boats are incredibly rare, mainly because many boats / yachts are glass fibre / carbon fibre these days and these do not offer the quick and easy path to earth that lightning is looking for. 3) The "electrocution from the iPad" that Colin described is called 'touch potential' it's one of the most common ways that people are injured by lighting events. you can protect your electrical equipment (especially communications and navigation) by installing surge protection devices. When in an area where there is lighting activity quickly unplug any devices or equipment (ipads for example) that are not essential for boat safety and navigation. Happy & safe sailing everyone.

      @williambunting803 Месяц назад +2

      Thanks Sean. I’m really interested in this area and am doing experiments with my boat to protect the system as much as possible. I’ve been suggesting to electronics systems builders that they incorporate optic fiber communication in the boat systems to break up conductive pathways between the various processors on boats such as the Navigation, remote processors, and battery management systems. Surge protection will be pointless if data lines become a pathway via capacitance or induction from a high current strike. I’ve installed all of my solar energy system MPPT’s, BMS’s and Lithium Batteries in a single metal case which hopefully will act as a Faraday cage, and can unplug the solar panels with a single 8 pin plug. The output side can also be unplugged as I have a DC/DC converter charging the house bank, and this can be unplugged easily too as it is just 2 wires. My current house bank will be replaced with FireFly batteries when |I can source them, as I believe these are relatively robust storage devices.

    I'm not sure how often you kind folks read through your comments but I do hope this catches your eye. I've been keeping up with you guys for quite a while now. Something I've always loved from one of your videos was from a Mr. Jeff from Philadelphia Pennsylvania on your trip to San Blas. The way he explains how inspirational you guys are was really touching, something I feel a lot of your followers may agree with. Riley, you have captained your boats so professionally and safely but also find the exact time when to bring the perfect amount of humor / morale boost to power your way wherever the destination. Elayna, your leadership in managing the boat along with being the amazing cook for your travels (which deserves more credit with your larger family). Your cheerful and heartwarming perspective even when things don't go as planed or during a catastrophe prove to just how much you care for everyone and everything aboard your home. We all have some idea of how life REALLY is especially those who take pride in their work of Vlogging their travels. To do something like this while looking after your family is probably extremely stressful. Seeing how far you have come in life and the future your building for yourselves and little ones is amazing. I genuinely feel the power of how much you both love each other and your family. Sometimes when I'm watching your older videos I find myself uplifted simply by Elayna goofing around on deck while Riley may be having a nap ( most likely completely aware she's doing so but having a blast) or by the way you both smile and look at each others eyes particularly after completing one of many difficult feats in life. I always finish watching your videos with almost (for lack of better words) a euphoric emotional and physical body high of joy and calmness. Personally I have been on a very extreme, life changing journey the last few years. A lot of grief, sadness and anxiety, however on the other end of the spectrum comes peace, new found pleasure in the small things in life and a wider sense of imagination. Your family has assisted me in a way that words cannot be apprehended. Truly. I wish you all the best of luck with your new home and may it bring your safe passage wherever your dreams lead you. Looking forward to your next videos as you begin another chapter in life. Much love from Chicago, Zack. Apologies for the long message, as I ramble on from a long 12 hour shift before catching some sleep.

      When I worked in electronics retail there is a thing called a power conditioner. It was pretty expensive and very heavy but we sold it to our high end clients that bought larges amounts of AV gear. What it does is take power (raw power is rough even on its own and can damage all your stuff over time, even without lightning) and actually clean up the spikes and dips and smooth out the power levels. From there it's stored and then fed into the system as clean power (no spikes, dips, or pops). They always come with a pretty significant fuse system so if a surge powerful enough to do damage to your stuff happens, it breaks the circuit and protects your gear from damage. For a boat I would have recommended a Faraday cage built into the boat that would ground to the bottom or keel but its probably too late for that now. Maybe they could build a Faraday cage into the control console at least.

    Your family adventure is inspiring, and I truly can't wait to see what's going on next. If I were your age, I could definitely see me in that lifestyle, the old back just won't cut it I'm sure but it's on a bucket list of things I wish I would have done, and with your channel, I can see ALL that I'm missing. The highs and lows of life at sea however, other than your Nordic trip, I haven't seen either one of you lift a snow shovel, and THAT is a dream..HA!

    The pink paint is referred to as Guide Coat. Often just thinners with some colour tint in it, but there is ready to go Guide Coat for $$$. This was applied by rag but is often sprayed. It allows the paint team to see they have properly sanded the surface and helps identify any low spots that may require filling and then priming.

    This one was fantastically informative and really entertaining. I started laughing when Professor Electro decided to take a bath… 😂 and the extra giant glasses!!! That they steamed over during the interview with Colin was spot on.
    On the real side I’m getting so excited for you guys seeing your home take shape. You both have to be so proud of how you have contributed to the whole of it.

    The "simplest" lighting protection one can install is an isolated lighting rod at the highest point (above the antenna and masts) with a very thick, low resistance cable extending straight down through the hull to a rod / plate in good contact with the ground / water.
    Electricity takes the route of least resistance, so if you can give it a safe route to take, it will.
    The catch is, lightning is SO powerful, it may overwhelm your protection system and ALSO go through unintended paths.

    IMO - For lightning you need a Spiky (and well grounded) antenna on top of your boat as it helps to discharge the electrons into the sky rather than store them which causes a higher discharge potential.

    Just loved watching Elayna opening the boxes. And those vintage plates…… I soooo want them. I should be drooling over the boat but I’m drooling over the bloody plates, how tragic am I?😂
