Zhou Long and Chen Yi: Symphony "Humen 1839" (2009)

Both Zhou Long and Chen Yi belong to that generation of Chinese composers who were educated musically under the Cultural Revolution, yet who opened again to Western compositional techniques after its end. This symphony was written to commemorate the 170th Anniversary of the Humen Opium Burning, in which Chinese hero Lin Zexu along with other citizens of Humen set to fire more than 1000 tonnes of the illegal British opium trade, which immediately started the First Opium War between the British and Chinese Empires. The symphony captures on its three first movements scenes of this historical moment, while the last consists in an ode to the resilient and mighty power of the Chinese people, eventually recycled by Chen Yi on his work Dragon Rhyme for wind band.
Tanto Zhou Long como Chen Yi pertenecen a la generación de compositores chinos educada bajo la Revolución Cultural, pero que no tardaron en reabrirse a las técnicas de composición occidental tras el fin de dicho evento. Ésta sinfonía fue escrita para conmemorar el 170 aniversario de la quema de opio en Humen, en la que el héroe chino Lin Zexu y otros ciudadanos quemaron más de 1000 toneladas del contrabando ilegal de opio operado por los británicos, mismo que iniciaría la Primera Guerra del Opio entre los imperios chino y británico. La sinfonía captura en sus primeros tres movimientos escenas ligadas a este momento histórico, mientras que el último consiste en una oda a la resiliencia y al grandioso poder del pueblo chino; éste sería eventualmente reciclado por Chen Yi en su obra Dragon Rhyme para banda sinfónica.
