  • Here is our series of Crochet for Beginners videos.
In this episode I will show you how to increase in a magic circle.
You will normally be increasing to create a nice flat circle, its really easy and the video shows you how!
Here's the pattern for you to try out your own flat circle:
Round 1: Working into magic ring, 6 sc (UK dc). (6 sts).
So let me help you here...are you new to pattern reading? The sc is the US term for single crochet. I have put in brackets the UK dc or double crochet term - this is what I talk about in my videos. This is how we write our patterns @woolcouture - we include both terminologies.
Then the (6 sts) means that you will achieve 6 stitches on that round.
Round 2: [2 sc (UK dc) in next stitch] six times. (12 sts).
Let me tell you a little more - when you see brackets like this [ ] that is telling you what to do next, so in this case you will do 2 stitches into the next stitch. Then after the bracket the 'six times' means that you will repeat this six times. Is this making sense?
Round 3: [1 sc (UK dc), 2 sc (UK dc) in next stitch] six times. (18 sts).
And finally here, you will do the 1 stitch into the next stitch, then 2 stitches into the one after, then repeat this sequence six times.
Round 4: [2 sc (UK dc), 2 sc (UK dc) in next stitch] six times.(24 sts).
Round 5: [3 sc (UK dc), 2 sc (UK dc) in next stitch] six times. (30 sts).
Round 6: [4 sc (UK dc), 2 sc (UK dc) in next stitch] six time
From here I think you will be getting it and you just increase the stitches by 6 each and every round :)
I have made a collection of videos that will help get you started with crocheting in the round. In my head there are 2 types of crochet, the flat type where you make a blanket or scarf, then you have the other type that makes circles, they both use the same stitches, but I normally teach them as 2 separate classes in real life, hence we have a collection of videos here for helping you crochet in the round, if you watch them all and practice, Im confident you will be a able to crochet.

My daughter is just leaning and Working on Mabel. Should her circle start getting rippled? We think there may be a problem but since it is round we thought maybe it’s ok. We would love to see a video demonstrating that problem if it is and how to avoid it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! The increasing was confusing to wrap my head around until you laid it out so clearly! I've never worked in the round before, so this is extremely helpful as I'm learning as I craft a gift for a new niece, haha.

It’s a UK dc and a US sc. Both the same stitch just different terminology for UK/US crochet. Top Tip: Always check your patterns to see whether they are written in UK or US.

The video is great, but I'm sorry, the "ss" sound at the end of words like "this" and "twice" is a bit distracting. Please don't elongate the pronunciation; it was quite distracting while I was watching the video on my laptop.
P.S.: No hate intended, just a suggestion! :)

@@woolcouture1752 well I got a beginner kit with the yarn and hooks with most of the things needed I got extra yarn and made sure I had to correct hook. I’m definitely getting better but I will follow tutorials slowly and it still always turns out abit wrong, like one corner of my granny squares always seem to go inwards and I’m not sure what mistake I’m making, I’ve made 8 granny squares today and the last one turned out right and was good but all other 7 had one corner that was wrong and I don’t even know how im doing it 😂

On the increase sts you do 2 dc into the st. So for example if you start by putting 6 dc into the magic circle. On the next rnd you will put 2 dc into each of the 6 sts moving from 6 sts to 12 sts. X
