- After filming some of the sexiest cars in Alaska, I would like to share with you some of my tips & advice on getting the best roller shots & some thing I wish I knew along my way of filming car rollers.
Rollers are by far one of my favorite shoot when it comes to automotive cinematography. Feel free to leave a comment or question regarding this topic or if you have any tips that I may have missed .

Great tips! I have few more questions:
1. Do you wear any kind of a seatbelt?
2. How do you change focal length without rebalancing the gimbal?
3. The trunk won’t close itself when slowing down?
Thanks a lot!
Matej Ceska full body harness, then lens I use doesn't change length. SIGMA 18-35 & the trunk stay open due to the hinges
Awesome video man! Lots of great tips.
Glad you like them!
and focous mode, is zone m, or track subject
i wish i had an idea of what ronin settings you use. i can never seem to find good numbers to use to get that smooth tracking footge.
Tyler Lee auto tune. Then stiffen a notch up or so
Great tips, thank you!
most welcome
how to record the audio
I appreciate all the tips and help but my only concern is, is wearing the gear and doing the film work legal?
bumping
Thanks. This really helped 👌👍👍
Glad it did Marc, thank you for stopping by !
Did you use the ronin with stock settings? or did you change some of the accel, deadzone and the rest?
Used auto tune and then stiffin up a bit. Tweak some settings too, but nothing to major
This is a really old video however I plan to shoot some rollers and wondered if there were recommendations for attaching something to the gimbal so I dont drop it
yes, you can use anything to thether it to you
I know this is kind of an old video but I am looking into doing car rollers. I have the DJI ronin them and the Sony a 73. I also own a polarizer and a variable ND filter. I have seen many videos on how to do car rollers but no one ever tells me which filter they use. Do people actually use a polarizer one filming cars to get reflections out or do they use a Nd filter so they can keep the 180° shutter rule? Or maybe people stack the two filter on top of each other😂 Great video! Let me know thanks.
Variable nd
U can also stack the filter
Yo, I know this video is old but I just got into filming rollers and car videos with my a6400. Currently I have the sigma trio prime lenses and looking for a good zoom lens for versatility on the field. Would you recommend the sigma 18-35? Or the Sony 18-105 f4?
Sigma 18-35 all day , much cleaner lens, just make sure to get a variable ND filter
Just wondering, how can u focus on the detail shots of the car like its "zoomed" in if you don't change your focal length because of the "rebalancing" issue?
Sony AF works great. Sometimes the ronin can handle the focal lengt changes of the weight
Would have been cool to see the final edit of those GT-Rs jetting around. LOL!

just curious if you've ever gotten pulled over for filming rolling shots like this? if so, did u get a ticket at all?
Possible
Awesome shots and video! Couple of questions though.
1. Do you get any kind of permit to drive with you “unsafe” not in a seat in the back?
2. How do you work on getting “lengthy” side shots. Not a quick pass by, but a good lingering shot of a car driving from the side?
Film permit.
Drive on a 2 lane road for lengthy shots
I'm late to the party but wanted to ask how well the autofocus is tracking the cars or are you using manual focus at all. If autofocus are you setting the track point or just letting the camera focus automatically?
Hi, I am using Auto focus, the mc11 and Sigma 18-35 does amazing well in AF.
My settings are fast and wide for the AF settings.
with Sony native lens, the AF is even better !
Thank you for joining the party ! happy shooting
@@NuttyNu thanks for the reply man so your sigma is an EF mount and what G master equivalent would you be using now? presume your on a Sony A7R/S? Time to ditch the GH5, autofocus sucks arse big time.
yes, ef mount, I still have it and use it here and there, I now shoot on the A7R3 _ the 16-35 and 24-70 GM
@@NuttyNu nice. Cheers man.
@@NuttyNu out of curiosity what would you say the best focal length is for rolling full length car shots on full frame?
I know this is an old ass video, but I'm looking into filming some of my first rollers, but like prior to doing so, do you know this is legal on most public roadways within the United States? Just wondering if I need to be extra precautious for cop activity aha
Ceejayybruhh haha most likely no. Be safe and safety first. Anything is possible with proper communication and safety
How do you make sure that your gimbal is not tilting upwards as the car speeds-up? With my crane 2 this is always happening even in locked-mode...
You have to keep the gimbal safe from the wind. That’s why I like the back of the van, be sticking it out the side door/ etc
@@NuttyNu the wind wasn't actually the problem. It felt more like it had something to do with the centrifugal force whenever the car speeded up...
What did you attach the harness to just out of interest? Great video btw, awesome tips
To the frame of the car . Seat mount
How much shutter speed do you need to use for crispy roller vids?
180 rule
I just need people who are willing to do this for me. If anyone here wants to help me, let me know. I'd be gladly interested to help you out with your filming or anything you need.
Thanks man
Most welcome
Are you using your in camera mic for audio?
No. External recorders
hi all, go create
Does anyone know a US ".gov" pdf or webpage that gives the exact requirements for filming FROM vehicles? Executing it would be incredible. Just want to be legal about it. Thanks.
HAHA
@@NuttyNu ha... but really
nun really
@@NuttyNu Well, ok. Thanks for the tips in the video anyways!
Here is information from the ASC. One suggestion to take from the article is to disable airbags when shooting in the front passenger seat. If that deploys at 150-200 MPH and sends your camera flying into your face....you're going to wish you disabled the airbag.

Would you recommend using AUTOISO?
Never.
wheres the footage, i want to see the finished
Thank you..

@@NuttyNu thx man love the GTRs
I have a question: theres so much different between a5100 & a6300 cos im shooting same things
25 fps for a fast motion?should it not be higher? .
Will the details not dissapear?.
no, 180 shutter speed.
NuttyNu oh right...didnt show us the results ..

What is your camera stabilizer? I love the fact you can just hold it like a streering wheel

Looks dangerous but I’m am very sure it was worth it. I bet there were dope footage
Always a risk to everything, so we always take ver precaution

Do I need to ask for any kind of authorization to do this? I don't think it's very legal to go arround with the trunk open.. 🤣
1:00 great advice!
4:16 when you laugh in excitement of camera shots
that's when you know if a camera is for you
THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING
Most importantly: dont drop your camera
lol that's not what the 180 degree rule means
wondering is this illegal 👀👀👀
Dumbest tips/advice video I ever see on RUclips ... no settings ... no tolling only text that you can’t ready coz of the background ... no actual footage from that day to confirm they your tips and advice are good ... keep up
