  • If you want a Porsche 911 restomod these days, then you’re spoilt for choice. A huge number of firms - Singer, Paul Stevens and Tuthill, to name just a few - have found their niche restoring and modifying the German firm’s classic sports car.
However, there’s one that stands out from the crowd. This is a modified 964-generation 911 from Oxfordshire-based Theon Design, and it differs from most 911 restomods with its engine - it features a centrifugal supercharger to give it a bit of extra grunt.
Join Matt Prior as he tests this £500,000 restomod on the tight and twisty roads of Southern England.

For several years I had a specially built black-on-black-on-black 1989 supercharged 911 street-legal race car done up as a 964 RS. Very gorgeous indeed!
It made about 420 herssperrs, and it had a 5-puck race clutch about 3mm long. It weighed 1250 kilos with the roll cage in.
Frankly, it wasn't much fun unless I was at a track. The sound was so loud that road use required earplugs and I had to bolt the exhaust to take the top off it. It had no aircon - and it ran on black Cup-One alloys and Toyo RF888s. Very Sticky!
Would I ever own another supercharged 911? Um - No.
Because Superchargers are not much fun, require a shit-ton of power to run, and you don't get much from them unless you wring its neck - and then it can be very scary indeed.
A turbocharger is a much better thing, and I am now a convert to small capacity engines with small turbochargers, to eliminate lag.
In fact, I will never buy a normally aspirated car ever again. Turbos are awesome things, and an open-to-the-atmosphere BOV is a wonderful thing. Who knew? :D

The 911 series deliberate evolution right up to the 993 production end .... Is something to behold. .. The coupe provides fond memories beginning with the 6-month-long order/spec process .... I would imagine that Supercharger chatter would become annoying on the long drives a GT Car is designed for. It annoyed me after 9 minutes and 18 seconds.

@@justsomeguy1141 This is clearly a personal restoration that in cost terms seems to have gone bonkers. TD have done what this customer wants and we can respect TD for that.
Resale could well show that this has the depreciation trajectory of a diesel Mum Truck.
MT is right: GB has become a submerging economy with 30% of British children living in poverty (15 million of the total population) and in the G20 only Russia is running things more crazily.
Not all of this is the brexit fiasco of course, 12 years of bungling austerity to subsidise London's hedge fund managers will insider trading intelligence have helped. The folks who have 400K to let go on a car restoration are going to be paying up in due course.

I’m so glad you mentioned how much easier it is to be smooth in a cable throttled ‘analogue’ car with linear responses from throttle, brakes and steering. Since drive by wire came in, and latterly ePAS, and the continually increasing sensitivity of servo brakes, my enjoyment and love of driving has all but disappeared. 😢

Great looking car. I really love the butterscotch leather interior. Would Theon put the KAEGE Ricaro seats in there covered in butterscotch leather. And I would request the seats have removeable inserts in leather. One basic, one with raised ribs and one with alcontera for racing.

Very nice but feel it will become tiring on the French or Spanish N-roads with that whine and not much fun on the primary roads. A standard car with AC (if summer) will do. I’ve done same in both water and Aircooled in both countries and nice as this is, that noise will drive me nuts, having covered French/ Spanish primary and secondly roads(north to south and back to north) in both my watercooled 911 and my Aircooled car.

Hmmm! That is quite a lot of money and the supercharger "dustbin lid noise" is not my cup of tea.
Do some sums and you could acquire the new F296 for willy waving in Knightsbridge, some thing sensible from Ford for sitting in jams on English roads and an LHD Alpine for a decent tour in Europe, Wales or Scotland and still have change to by a WAG hand bag for 'er indoors.

It`s pretty sad to see classic Porsches destroyed to make these restomods. Take a 996 and restomod it, that`s ugly to start with, no harm done reinterpreting it. A clean 964 with turbo s or cup rims, a V3 KW coilover kit, RWD (conversion if needed) and a manual box, tune & exhaust and some newer GT3 seats (+ a half cage) should be a fun enough car to drive for anybody.

Saw a Gunther Werks 911 for sale at the Beverly Hills Pagani showroom and it was just stunning and this looks very similar in quality and general fit and finish. I'd be over the room to have/drive any of these high dollar 911 restomods, they take the already beautiful 964 platform to the next level.

  • @nateisright

964 for modifying, 993 for keeping stock.
The air cooled 911s were perfect sized. The body and packaging remained roughly the same for 30 years and by the end of the run any imperfections had been exercised.
Make mine a 3.8 turbo 964 in GT Silver!

Why are so many restomodded? Maybe it's because porsche gave instructions on how to seam weld it and they fitted mounting points for this and that, but most probably because it can command a ridiculous price due to it being an icon for the rich

Such a shame that all those beautyfull "resto-mods" are costing ten kidneys and a liver...
They are the ultimate cars for people in their late 30's, early 40's , cause those were the cars we grew up with...
Our generation of sportscars , but with modern tech!
But each and everyone of them ranges from 450k to over a million €'s ...
Alfaholics , singer , theon , legacy , eagle , gateway, Automobili Amos, rtech... etc...
Amazing cars , but way overpriced ...

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 Год назад

At least in the case of Alfaholics you can bolt on parts like suspension to upgrade on a budget (although still a fairly sizeable one). If I had a 80s 911, I'd just get the suspension upgrade kits (like the front subframe assembly) from someone like Elephant racing, and focus on saving weight. Fairly easy to get 90% of the Singer driving experience for a fraction of the price.
