You are very generous for providing this kind of stuff free of charge. I guess I should also include Eric O, Kieth, Dan, Ivan ,TBT and all the rest that do this sort of thing as well. Most industries these days are trying to make money on information. This IMO is a shame but understandable. I however, find great joy and satisfaction teaching someone a skill that they may be struggling with that will help them be a better "fisherman" If you know what I mean.... You, (your company NGK or Wells) as well as the other folks I've mentioned I believe are of the same ilk and I want to acknowledge that and offer my gratitude. All of the above mentioned have not only saved me, my family and friends a good chunk of change but also helped hone my critical thinking to a great degree that transcends purely automotive diagnostics.... Respect!!

A quick and easy test on the Jeep engine would be to use a vacuum gauge. The needle would show large vacuum drops, indicating that the engine had valvetrain problems.
Would it have shown vacuum drops or would the needle just dance around? I'm not one to use a vacuum gauge much, its definitely a learned skill. A transducer in the manifold shows me the same thing, just over time. With the vacuum test complete, would you have been confident in the actual fault? Or would you have sold it as a valve cover removal and inspection? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Yes, a book could be written on how to interpret a vacuum gauge, much like interpreting oscilloscope patterns. If someone didn't have a scope, transducer, etc. or just didn't feel comfortable using them, he could at least feel confident recommending to pull the valve covers for an inspection of the valvetrain. It would be interesting to see how a vacuum gauge would react with the blowbacks in the intake manifold from such an unusual condition. A steady needle reading (at idle) of 17-21" Hg on the vacuum gauge is normal (but vacuum goes down at higher altitudes, so you have to compensate). Any needle drops or oscillations indicate a problem with engine health. A vacuum gauge could certainly still tell more about that engine than a compression test or cylinder leak down test, since those only test the sealing ability of the engine, but they show nothing about the engine's breathing ability. Plus, pulling spark plugs for testing purposes is not easy on all engines. Certainly, someone who only had a simple vacuum gauge would not have recommended replacing the water pump :)
Well said Joseph! A simple tool/testing that can give a good amount of info with a limited amount of work. Make that book, i'll buy it :) Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

How can you save known good waveforms on the new Snap On Tridon or Zuess? Looking to purchase 1 and have had a tridon loaner I've been using a couple weeks now, but curious how saving data on the snap on stuff works? Specifically the tridon or zuess? Thanks, your content is some of the best for us diag guys imho
Hey Caleb, I'm not sure. I haven't had my hands on either of them. You may find videos directly related to it though. I know Snap-On puts out some of their own. They may be worth taking a peak at. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Thank you for your videos Mike, really helpful! If you were looking for a scope for your commercial shop, would you buy a 4 channel scope or an 8 channel scope?
Hey Jorge, thanks for watching! The more channels the better. If you can afford it, the 8 channels the way to go. That way you can do 4 cam sensors, a crank sensor, and an ignition sync on a modern DOHC V6 to diag chain issues. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Got a Vantage Ultra. Looking to upgrade to a 4 channel scope some day. Are the leads you are using the long test drive leads, and where did you get them? AES wave?
How does one get paid for diagnosis? Is it done by charging hourly. The case study showed 1.6 to do a compression test but the relative compression test made things more confusing so you had to do more testing. I'm curious as to how long it actually took you to figure out the same thing. I'm not knocking the labs cope method just trying to figure out how I'm to pay for a labscope that I have to buy. If your doing the same thing faster should I get paid the same as doing it with the gauge. Not sure if I'm really asking the question correctly or if you would understand how I'm asking it.
That's a good question! If you as a technician become faster and more efficient. Than you should benefit from the time and equipment you use to do that. What a lot of shops do is sell blocks of time. Say you sell an hour block of time for diagnosis and figure it out in 15 minutes. Then you get rewarded for being trained and efficient. I hope this helps! ~Ryan
is it bad to have a/c wave on a camshaft sensor on a 1999 Toyota RAV4. I'm getting the P0340 code. bought a Picoscope and found that the sensor is putting out A/C wave form. Is this Normal? Can't find a Known Good Wave form.
Hey William, thats a normal signal. That should be an AC waveform that changes in amplitude and frequency the faster the engine spins. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Ended up being a bad starter and warn flywheel. I scoped everything, even checked for excessive a/c. I could not find any proof of faults anywhere. I pulled the starter because it was grinding after every start. It would sound fine during the cranking til you let off the power. No more P0340 after replacing the starter. I have recorded the the crank to start on the old starter with a picoscope. When I get time I’m going to compare the waveforms of the new starter. It would be nice to be able to see what the problem was with the old starter, because it seem to be working fine according to the scope waveform.
Hmmm, not sure if better, is the right word. More modern, for sure...but overal the software will capture the same waveform. Mike Becker, Senior Insturctor
