I've loved PJ Harvey since Rid of Me. But how odd, I've rarely ever heard her speak. But, when I watched her interviews, I was shocked at just how "normal", how proper, dainty, lady-like, soft-spoken, uniquely gorgeous, intelligent & sweet that she really is. I was expecting some hot mess wacky as hell, kind of like Courtney Love, but no she is so much nothing of the sort. Great post. Astute and honest and funny. I'm enjoying seeing all the love for Polly Jean here, especially from men! I thought men might find her a bit threatening. I agree her musical persona is different from her offstage personality. I knew she was a country farm girl. I don't think she's ever lived in London. She's never married or had a baby either, which is interesting to me as a woman.
I saw her three times in Philly in the late 90s/early 2000s. Twice in the tiny Theatre of the Living Arts and once opening the basketball stadium for U2, believe it or not. She came out on the stage that time wearing a a tiny dress and super high stiletto heels, and promptly broke one during the first song. No worries, she just played the rest of the show barefoot.
I would just respectfully suggest that you might also give Courtney more consideration. She's also quite smart and sensitive and not as much of a hot mess as the media wanted/wants us all to believe. She hasn't done much musically since those first few albums (which were great) but she's turned out to be a fine actress. She also did a very decent job of raising her daughter, who just turned 30 and by all accounts seems quite normal considering who she is!

So True to Form ... Creativity is the Consumed Nature of 1's Surroundings an Environment It becomes Art thru What We as a Personable Person Are. U R What U Eat

It's a good point PJ makes here about how creative's output is not necessarily about themselves but are observations of other people. Most artists I know have an ouvere which can change over time and is ultimately a lens on the world, not the entire world.

That's the first time i've heard her talk and I'm surprised by the difference between her speaking voice and her singing voice.

@0:55 - "couldn't imagine anyone wanting to listen to it other than myself"...
Often, the young bands don't know how good they are because it's not like a sports competition where you're winning everything.
You just have to hope that the others like it.
In terms of overall music style, Dry might be my favorite of hers. The "Demos" version in particular.

PJ does have the proof that Pat Patterson claimed - Don't compose for the market - compose for your self - The extremely individual is universal - composing for general audience will fail with both the artist and the audience.
