Omg I saw her in Seattle at Under the Rail 93 I wasn't 21 so I sat at the backstage door just to listen...She started with Rid Of Me.and it was UNFUCKING REAL! It was so unbelievably soothing and calm and quiet that I lost myself for a bit,and then the chorus came!!!! It sounded like a BOMB went off.To this day I haven't heard, nor seen a show that moved me more.P.S.Ive never missed a PJ show since....and if your lucky enough to see her perform Rid Of Me (which she usually doesn't perform live) she does it with only her vocals and her guitar. Sorry to be so sloppy in this message. But I just simply love her so much.
@@buddhull No, it was on 5th and it actually was under the rail, think it was a night club for a while, don't know if it's still there, the off-ramp is on Eastlake, completely different place.
Saw her live at a club across the street from Fenway Park around this time. I only owned the first album at the time so I was unfamiliar with a lot of the set but I recall being impressed how hard she rocked and how professional they were. This was no half assed college grunge band goof off. This was someone who intended to have a real long career like David Bowie, Neil Young or Peter Gabriel.
Yeah she's so professional and she never seems to get caught up in any of the rockstar bullshit that derails so many talented people. Talented and smart lady. She's basically been able to go wherever she wanted to throughout her career and do it well, definitely similar to Bowie in some respects as you mentioned in your above comment.
@@sunsaengnim6880 i am not a fan of all her stuff but I really respect the fact she gives herself challenges to overcome. I actually prefer the 4 track demos album to Rid of Me but this album was really well reviewed and seemed to fit in well in the “riot girl” era. Her band was too professional, and probably too male, to be considered “riot girl” but based on the song titles alone it seemed intended to make a feminist statement. Other than maybe the best of Bikini Kill this was probably the most powerful female sang and written punk or alternative rock of the early 90s. Great stuff.
the quality of this vid is fantastic, sounds great, looks great. wish the whole show, that i managed to get myself a copy of was of this quality. thanks for sharing
in this particular performance, the way polly jean will say her “yeaahhhhh”s towards the end of the song with the falsetto reminds me so much of the way my ex girlfriend would say & sing those same “yeaaahhhh”s. but the reason behind those yeahs originated cuz i think she was mekin fun of me once for the upward inflection in my voice when i maybe unsurely say yea & agree to something lol but then also when Arctic Monkeys (who are also my favourite band) came out with The Car, we met in 2022, Alex turner would sing the say high noted yeahhhhhs in songs on the album but also on Star Treatment from TBHC (another favorite album of mine) but yea hearing her sing those falsetto yeahhhhhhs would just bring me such happiness. - wether it be her impression of my favorite artist or jokingly agreeing, that height of her vocal rage just tickled my brain in the most soothing fashion. especially cuz her voice was on the lower side which i missed so much. it was like when you sit in bed and pull the covers over and they’re clean or the head scratcher apparatus oo so good. so smooth. to physically even type “ex girlfriend” on this post feels abhorrent & like vomit inducing. i miss her so & will play this song because pj Harvey will sing those Yeahs exactly like she did. and ill play it on repeat even if it does make me cry and the tears roll down my cheek like how the calm of her voice would roll in softly and breeze into my ear canals kissing the little hears in its ducts. Kaylee maybe you’ll read this - i don’t know what that will change because i just want to allow u your space & time but just know you occupy mine indefinitely. i always think about how the old ppl sometimes write comments on oldies them & their partners would listen to or remind them to, now im not no geezer yet but i listen to this song just as they do, longing for their lover
Nah, not necessarily. It’s only one song, some people can run their voices ragged and never get nodules on their vocal chords. Others, will have a strict timeline, on how long/hard they can do it. It depends on the person.
She can't sing two lines at once (not sure who did the background vocals on this track for the record, but the drummer is credited with background vocals on the record). The record was recorded as a trio (I'm sure there are some guitar overdubs... but probably less than you might think knowing producer Steve Albini's style).
This IS with the entire band If you are lucky enough to see her live and she actually PERFORMS RID OF ME (Which she hasnt on the last 5 tours ive seen her with, even with John Parish)she does it by herself. Her and her guitar. If your referring to the Album Rid of Me.Mick Ellis was her drummer, and he is the one doing the "lick my legs"part.
Sixty nine subscribers, sixty nine comments. I guess this one breaks it ... What is this??? with the audio/video sync, lol - some kinda game? trippy/weird, more weird than anything
Would be so great to see a properly synced up version of this performance. The video quality is decent and audio quality is rather good for this age. But unfortunately and almost tauntingly, they are independent of one another here.
I’m gonna.DON’T YOU DON’T YOU WISH YOU NEVER NEVER MET HER. Best turn on a dime ever
Saw this tour in D.C. in '93, still stands as the best live show I've seen.
Polly Jean an absolute gem of a human willing to share her creativity. The 90s were damaged beautiful creative

Fun fact for those interested: Kurt Cobain is in the audience.
Source??
Cobain was garbage.

I know they didn't get along but this was the best version of PJ Harvey. Amazing.
Who was the person she didn't get along with? (genuinely asking btw)
Now that is a great arrangement
No one like her.

Monster performance. Unique in the annals at this point.

I love this version though the drummer probably had severe nodes on his vocal cords by the end of the tour.
He quit at the end of the tour, haha
They had to remove his vocal cords by the end of the tour actually.
