Always been a fan but just went on a mad ' looking at random PJ Harvey youtube videos marathon' and come again to the conclusion that she .....is...fucking.....amazing.
Not entirely so. KCRW gave this album a BIG push and played BHL quite a bit on its release and continues to promote them. Granted they're public radio, but only the *most* influential music source on radio or elsewhere - their DJs have day jobs directing music for films, series and adverts. You've heard their work and often their voices. Because it's LA.
She is creating art and poetry not pop songs for the masses. You either get it or you do not. People can seek her out. Thank god for these videos that are timeless.
Hi, thanks for pointing this out. I was wondering who he is (I just got into PJ Harvey recently) because of his unique appearance, actually all of them looks very 'unique' haha. Peace!
@@racoon17 - Eric played keyboards on Is This Desire? and White Chalk and bass on a couple of tracks on A Woman A Man Walked By. He also appeared on the cover of Uh Huh Her with Polly Jean, although he did not play on that album. In this particular performance of Black Hearted Love he was playing a Gibson EBO. Never been a big fan of Gibson basses myself, but that one had an awesome tone. Eric's footwork was pretty fancy in some places too, I thought. Glad to hear that you're into Polly Jean. Super creative and a great voice. Peace to you!
@@herculesgrytpype-thynne9371 I just straight up watching lots of PJ live performances after you mention his name and he played the keyboard in Down By The Water as well (I don't know about the album ver). I had no knowledge about music equipment lol but I could tell it sounds strong. PJ's definitely one of the coolest musician around. After listening to her most popular songs I was in awe because of how she's almost like a chameleon!
Polly went to college with a close friend of mine in Yeovil. I was lucky enough to do an evening recording skills course run by John at the same college - I learned a lot and my band later recorded a few late night sessions in the Ice House studio where they recorded in the early days. Never met Polly, but I can honestly say John is a nice bloke and a good teacher.
What a sound ; haven't ever heard anything like it. John reveals the melodic possibilities of the electric guitar; every bit as impressive as the blistering fingering of an Eddie Van Halen IMHO
Wow this song and the performance gives me chills. Very few artists sound better live than their recordings. Absolute masterpiece !! I too am in love with this song.
I remember how after White Chalk, which was brilliant but quite challenging, Black Hearted Love was such a relaxed, good old Indie Rock PJ listen. It felt really good!
Quelle femme, que talent !!! quel assemblage avec John P! la transmision de cette cutlture rock pure from guts aux nouvelles générations m'inquiète, je ne vois nul part que ce soit aux US ou en Europe le relais de cette poesie glamour rock ! i'm fuck'in worried for the legacy !
I've been thinking the same thing!! This song has been in my head since I first heard it a couple of weeks ago. PJ's voice is like brown sugar. Looooove it!
That line got me too. P J is the kind of woman who inspires the idea of goddesses, of mythical figures who last throughout time. This may seem over the top, but that line linked sex & death & regeneration. She can be a very dark lady indeed. Kali the destroyer. The Black Prince ...
I think I saw you in the shadows I move in closer beneath your windows Who would suspect me of this rapture? [Chorus] And who but my black hearted love? And who but my black hearted love? [Verse 2] When you call out my name in rapture I volunteer my soul for murder I wish this moment here forever [Chorus] And you are my black hearted love And you are my black hearted love In the rain, in the evening I will come again [Bridge] I'd like to take you For you are my black hearted love I'd like to take you to a place I know My black hearted I'd like to take you For you are my black hearted love I'd like to take you to a place I know My black hearted I'd like to take you For you are my black hearted love I'd like to take you to a place I know My black hearted I'd like to take you For you are my black hearted love I'd like to take you to a place I know My black hearted [Outro] In the rain In the evening In the garden I will come Again In the rain Mouth to mouth In the garden In the rain
as Dave says"satisfying!". As good as the Cd version. If she just came out as a new artist now w/this song, the startling contrast to the other contenders would have people running for the record stores .still kills it 20 years into her career.I'm justrealizing how singular she is in the amazing no# of great discs over a length of career & work that only a tiny handful of artists EVER reach..and hasn't hit the skids2irrelevance yet. Not as big as Madonna & Bowie maybe..but a lifetime achiever!
Brilliant performance, and slightly slower and more sassy than the recorded version. Most bands play faster live, which often spoils things. Love the wonky guitar riff, and especially the chords as it drops down from the chorus into the start of the verses. And Polly looks fantastic.
She transcends everything, she elevates everything... I'm starting to believe I am in love with her, it just doesn't make sense, what her music makes me feel.. and don't get me wrong, I like men, but that's what I mean, she transcends everything
The sound quality is excellent for the band on this recording. But for me 15 years later, Polly Jean's voice and performance is a quantum level above this early version. Listen to her Glastonbury set 2024 - not only does she look stunning (without the distracting red lipstick), her delivery is absolutely mesmerising!

@@TheAdrianrawls 😁👍
Agreed
Exactly the same here :) Couldn't agree more! ;)
Letterman, two Jazzmasters, some Vox amps, a killer groove, and a goddess. That was wild.
Krishna?
I think this is the best of all the recorded versions of this song,. The reverb of her voice makes this version haunting .
She reinvents herself with each record. Always original and always amazing. Too great to be on the radio unfortunately.
Jody Lowe: Who listens to radio anymore?
;^}
Not entirely so. KCRW gave this album a BIG push and played BHL quite a bit on its release and continues to promote them.

Stupid effin' radio... What ever played for the past 25 years that was even good?
Killer riff.
No kidding. That is some slick guitaring.
Love his tone and those menacing notes. Anyone know the tuning?
Those menacing guitar notes with Polly's pleading tones is a match made in heaven.
The dude on bass is a chap named Eric Drew Feldman. He's also worked with Captain Beefheart, Pere Ubu, Frank Black and The Pixies.

I love Pj's regular band but John's guitar playing compliments her so much. I love Polly Jean!
I think her best work is with him.

I have ALWAYS loved her but this album was my favorite. I was going through a rough time and they came in at the right moment.
Wow this song and the performance gives me chills. Very few artists sound better live than their recordings. Absolute masterpiece !! I too am in love with this song.
Agree - Has always been one of my favorites.
This is just too good. For weeks I've listened to it over and over
Agreed there isn't anything quite like it.
Damned that voice.
Instantaneously she start to sing, she start a foot beat so much beautiful.. And quite perfect accuracy to the accents of this amazing song
It's called keeping rhythm.
This song is sooo good! And PJ, oh she looks more amazing as she ages...dancing bare footed!!!
Its for the horned one and the jesters of the eternal bouncy castle.clown jester DMT salvia elves but ssssh don't tell
What's amazing is Letterman got this on major network media - and freely demonstrated his awe at their talent. It's not K-pop.
fucking brilliant, also love how letterman got his face melted.
One of my favorite musical artists of all time! She's so awesome!
Always great
This song just works so amazingly well, always returning to this tune, a classic
I remember how after White Chalk, which was brilliant but quite challenging, Black Hearted Love was such a relaxed, good old Indie Rock PJ listen. It felt really good!
i love polly. the most perfect woman ever
Great tune... and even better live! It's also the one song that reminds more of the band Television than any I've ever heard.
She's just amazing! There are certain artist's, that genius. Todd Rundgren, Neil Young, Frank Zappa, PJ Harvey.
She always gives me goosebumps.
PJ Harvey's music will never bore me!!!! Damn love her ever since my brother bought that CD 'Rid of me' about 17 years ago...!
Amazing Song, luv it. And it sounds here live better than on record, wow!
So cute, natural, wild PJ. Classy. Rock. Tiptoe timeless art. Perfect low timing. Great live

Breathtaking
Amazing song
I remember watching this show in Vegas on my honeymoon. Cool story I know.
PollyJean and Parish are both timeless and extraordinarily phenomenal
I've been thinking the same thing!! This song has been in my head since I first heard it a couple of weeks ago. PJ's voice is like brown sugar. Looooove it!
Love her poetry🥰
Polly's laugh is everything
PERFECT PRODUCTION
I love this sound!!!
This is even better than the studio version.
Proof that the recording engineer knew well enough to leave it the F alone
I'm in love with this song...
Fantasies of busking and playing this in a London tube station
amazing band
Totally fabulous in every way
This is absurdly epic and surprising. Her best moment on live television by far.
Amazing performance

Said as best as it could be expressed.
I got this album when it came out, and it was a banger; hearing John play the song live though ♥♥♥♥ god Polly Jean is adorable.
PJ is one of the few musical gods that actually look and sound better as they mature without sacrificing their artistic integrity.
Great Song she is so good at those Unique Long Vocals She Does, its classic.
I think I saw you in the shadows
I move in closer beneath your windows
Who would suspect me of this rapture?
[Chorus]
And who but my black hearted love?
And who but my black hearted love?
[Verse 2]
When you call out my name in rapture
I volunteer my soul for murder
I wish this moment here forever
[Chorus]
And you are my black hearted love
And you are my black hearted love
In the rain, in the evening
I will come again
[Bridge]
I'd like to take you
For you are my black hearted love
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you
For you are my black hearted love
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you
For you are my black hearted love
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you
For you are my black hearted love
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
[Outro]
In the rain
In the evening
In the garden
I will come
Again
In the rain
Mouth to mouth
In the garden
In the rain
So good!
I 've seen Polly three times and i always comeback home with the same feelings i just can't explain with words!
Just recently discovered this song and really, really can't get enough of it. Checking out all the versions on youtube.

I can’t sing, but even if I could, I’d never be able to do it on late night television as perfectly as PJ is in this video… while barefoot.
This woman could rule the world!
What a talented musicians, this song is brilliant :) I could listen it over and over again.

John Parish = Genius, Pj Harvey = Godess
Love this song, great performance!
Better than the recording.

PJ is the killer Godess for ever!!
Pj , is amazing
Unbelievable better live than the studio version
I bet letterman's stalker loves this song, it certainly fits metaphorically. I wonder if he was thinking about that when he heard this.
fantastisch!

excelente las guitarras con PJ Harvey

I've never used the word flabbergasted, but David Letterman seemed to be during the outro.

because she's a goddess
They performed the song much better on Leno. I had it on vcr tape but accidentally recorded over it.
@kartofflenbrain
the west country accent she has is rhotic (Rs are pronounced like in american english). that accent is quite close in sound to american english in other ways as well. she is not singing in her normal voice.
Saying PJ is talented is an understatement
*_Gifted ..._*
Shut up Dave .... PJ and John rule ... barefooted PJ looks and sounds so hot and that badass riff John developed is amazing ...
oh yeah. party happening here
