Honestly I got this for a white elephant Christmas gift but ended up picking my own gift. Amazing technology lay in bed set the Temps when it's too cold or too hot and when me and my wife are away at work it sets to eco mode and saves us money

I’m trying to decide between the Nest that you used or the Ecobee I think it’s called. The Ecobee comes with sensors for various rooms so an average temperature will set automatically. I’m wondering if the Learning Nest has a similar feature or functionality. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, the Nest does offer sensors that work with both the Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E. You can actually use up to 6 sensors per Nest Thermostat or a total of 18 sensors per home. You can buy then in either a 1-pack/$39 or a 3-pack/$99.

man you saved my butt, how did you determine the orange W2 wire went into the OB Slot? i have same honeywell or very close and this video got me going, thanks!
fxdb mgtow You were only looking at the top portion of the terminal! The bottom-part shows that orange wire as connected to the OB slot. 👌🏾😎
This is the best video I've seen yet, thank you for your clarity and easy instructions. My HVAC person set mine up and I've had trouble connecting to WIFI but my big question is if you would happen to know if the current temp in the center of the Nest says for ex., 81 degrees, and the smaller outer number says 79 why would the AC be on if the target temperature is higher? It's pretty hot here this month and I'm trying to keep my energy costs down, thanks for any advice you can give on this question.
Target temp is the one in the center and current temp on the outside ring of the Nest.
My current Honeywell thermostat has
Red- to R
Black- to W1 and W2 with a connector
Yellow- to Y
Green- to G
Orange- to O
Blue- to B
White not currently connected.
Should the white wire be attached to W1 and the black wire not in use? I understand we don’t need the jumper connector with Nest.

Thanks for the positive comment! I am very confident that we are savings on heating & cooling since installing the Nest Thermostats. It's tough to calculate because the weather is not constant. I can see what I spend year over year, but the inconsistency of the weather makes it tough to actually measure savings. With settings schedules, using Home/Away Assist and Eco Temps, I'm very confident that we are seeing some savings as a result of the Nest devices.

Yes, both my wife and I have the Nest app on our devices (phone & tablets) and we can control the Nest Thermostat remotely. We do use the same Nest account and login info though, not separate Nest accounts. We can be logged into the same Nest account and control them without any problem. Hope that helps.

Yes, you can paint the trim plate.
I have exactly the same original setup. White should go to W1 or W2/aux? I currently put white in W1.

At 5 minutes 39 seconds of the video. If you want to cover visible paint differences. The metal bracket goes against the wall and the trim plate attaches to the metal plate using two of the short screws in the side holes, then the thermostat attaches to the trim plate using the short screws in the top and bottom holes.

You would install the Next Thermostat and replace and/all existing thermostats where you want to. In my house, I have two thermostats, one upstairs and one down. I have replaced both of my original thermostats with Nest devices. You don't need to replace all of your thermostats, only the ones you want to. One Nest Thermostat cannot control other (non-Nest) devices though.

What if the thermostat is an older model, you know the turn-stile / wheel-dial type which has two bottom switches underneath: Cool - OFF - Heat (on the left side), Auto - On (on the right side). There is a spring coil inside, very basic. So is the wiring on something this old compatible with this Nest?
What wiring does this old thermostat currently have? How many wires & are they color coded?

Do I have to buy two? I have one Dow stairs and one upstairs. I think there independent but not sure
I'm pretty confident that you're downstairs and upstairs thermostats are independent. I believe there are some situations where you can run two thermostats off of one furnace, but it is rare. I am not an HVAC person. If you have two furnaces running two independent thermostats you do not NEED to buy two Nest thermostats, you could start with one and then get a 2nd one later on, or not. Hope that helps.
Some vids say the white wire goes into the W2 slot but mine is installed to the W1. Does it matter?
This was a very helpful video. Our air conditioning company set it up but couldn't get the phone APP to work. So i tried again today and it worked seamlessly The challenge now is trying to balance the thermostats for maximum benefit,. Where is that video?
Does auxiliary heat use more energy thus increasing electric bill?

Hey Bud, I have a question. When you connect the last red wire, how do you know it goes to RH position? There is another RC position on the left side. How do I make sure the red wire belongs to RH or RC? Please explain. Thanks.
What slot was the red wire in your existing thermostat? The R wire is also referred to as the Rh wire, so that's why I put the R wire in my old thermostat into the Rh slot on the right hand side of the Nest.

I have a pole barn workshop that I only heat when I plan to be out working, but I would like to turn the heat on remotely in advance. Can you leave your heat off and use the app to remotely engage on demand? I really don’t need the learning functions for my application.
Yes, I do that all the time. Using the App on a smartphone you can turn on the heat in advance of arriving home, or in your case, heading out to the barn.

Test all the wires with a multimeter for 24v AC or higher especially the common or the nest will not charge , and stall the install (USB charging the nest is good for 2 hrs). The nest is basically a computer in the wall not a thermostat running off two AA's. If the common is dead most recommend repurposing the G fan wire to the common.
Hi! This is the fourth video I’ve watched tonight after installing .. trying to answer a question that I can’t find an answer for yet. I have this same generation nest but I do not have a heat pump. It says heat pump for OB wire detection so I’m confused .. How do I set this so that it does-not say that I am using a heat pump?
I've not seen many installations that use the OB wire. When you installed, how many wires did you have in the thermostat that you replaced? When I changed out my old thermostat I had a wire for auxiliary heat, I don't think many people have that setup, but I could be wrong.

The blue wire is normally the Common or 'C' wire.

I replaced two, (2 zones), old school Honeywell thermostats with a Lux 1500 about 15 years ago, I have a separate old Honeywell tstat for my AC, there are only two existing wires for the heat and 3 wires in the AC tstat. Am i not able to install a Nest type thermostat? or will i need an electrician? thank you for any advice
You may need to call an electrician here. Do you see those low voltage colored wires at lease?

When we bought the house back in 1999, the 2 heat zones and the ac thermostat were all separate, is it possible to combine one of the thermostats to include both a heat and AC function? The orange wire is connected in W1 or O/B? It was labeled to W1
Ok, so here are my comments on the O/B wire. That was the first install I had seen with an O/B wire and I did consult an electrician before I wired up that Nest and put the orange wire in the O/B slot. Not all wiring jobs can be the same as I have seen the wrong color wires coming from the furnace to the thermostat. In most setups the white wire is W1 and a brown wire is W2/AUX. It really depends on how the original unit was wiring when installed. As long as you follow the mapping of the wires on the unit your replacing (take a picture before you take off the wall), you should be good. When in doubt, call an electrician (I am not an electrician). Hope that helps.
My honeywell thermostat only got two wires? Can i just replace the thermostat or do i need to install the heat link as well? Also i have two thermostats, can i use them on one heat link, or if i can replace it only, are they gonna work?!

I see that u used a ‘Y1’ sticker for a wire that was marked only ‘Y’ on the old thermostat. I have a similar setup.......is that ok?
Some thermostats are wired differently and also have fewer wires then others. Take a picture of your existing setup and then wire the Nest Thermostat exactly as the old one was wired.
Why is it important to get the single and dual setting correct?
I can’t get entry key because it connected to the previous owner account! Why should I do now? Reset?

If you take out the screws of the entire plate first and move off the wall there is less chance of losing connecting wires in the wall .
does the bluetooth has to be on for both phone and nest device? if yes, how do we turn on bluetooth on nest device?
Great questions. When you first setup your Nest Thermostat you connect it to your home network. If you ever need to update your WiFi settings you must do so directly on your Nest Thermostat and not on the App on your smartphone. Bluetooth does not have to be enabled on your smartphone for you to be able to go into the App and remotely control the Nest Thermostat. Please let me know if you still have questions.
How do you know what the temperature in the house is?
When you look at the Nest Thermostat, the center # is the target temp that you want it to be at and the # around the outside of the ring is the current temp.

Without WiFi the Nest Thermostat will function as a regular thermostat which you won't be able to control remotely. During install I believe you can bypass or skip the internet connection step and proceed with normal setup functions. If the Nest Thermostat needs an update you won't be able to get that until you connect the Thermostat to WiFi.
I had the nest termoster but why when the heat on for a while and time it to come on it take so long . A had to turn on the power then it work okay

my thermostat used to work fine for months, all of a sudden it does not recognize my WIFI any more, so i reset the thermostat and router, the thermostat does not get added to my nest app !!! i tried to connect the thermostat and my phone to different routers in my house but no luck, any tip is appreciated.
You did everything that I would have done. Reset Nest first, then try connecting to a different phone/router. Did any other devices in house lose connectivity? Try resetting router? Do you have any wifi extenders in your home that might need to be reset as well? How old is your device? If all else fails, I would contact support.
Is it capable of controling the humidifier ?
As long as the device (humidifier) has a mechanical switch you are good to go. A mechanical switch are those that actually have a physical switch (called either a toggle or rocker switch) that you have to flip from one side to the other. An example would be a traditional light switch on the wall. Electrical switches have nothing to toggle but looks more like a button you push. An electrical switch has no "on" or "off" position like a mechanical switch. Typically, all the appliances that have a mechanical switch can be controlled using smart technology. I hope that helped.
Why the W1wire was connected to ob spot??
I got a little confused and need clarity. The red wires was shown as connected to the RC and was hunkered to the R. So how did he decide to connect the red wire to thr RH?
So, on the original thermostat the red wire was coming into the R spot with a jumper to the RC terminal. Since it wasn't coming into RC I didn't connect it to RC on the Nest, but rather the RH spot. With the Next Thermostat you don't need jumpers as the Nest will automatically jump the two red connectors. On conventional setups the RH spot is 24VAC power from the heating transformer, so that's why I put it in the RH spot. DISCLAIMER: I am not an electrician or HVAC professional. If you have questions you should always consult a professional. :) I did my own research before putting it in that RH connector.
