Stephan is articulate, responsive and smart about what people's training problems are, what their questions are. He makes conceptually rich and complete DVD products with high class, articulate teachers, this guy is a credit to the grappling community. I hope he sees this and hears my appreciation.
8 year No-Gi experience here (advanced tip). I have found a lot of success with the way I was taught at Dojo Body Mind in Charlotte. When you have the Anaconda lock and have completed the roll (Once you have the lock the roll 'should' be given) you want to take a long step with bottom leg (the leg on the mat). Basically you are kicking the low leg towards your opponent (staying on the toes of the opposing foot), then using the top leg (leg off the mat) to hook opponents leg (hooking either leg should work but the opponents top leg hooked is better). This stops your opponent from using his/her legs to scoot away. Before I started to hook the leg immediately, some opponents who are more savvy would keep moving away( think, at fast as I can move towards, they can move away, especially if they are using the arms to push on your chest/hips). Trapping the leg almost ensures the immediate submission. Folks that compete in tournaments understand. You don't want a long drawn out match, you want you submit them ASAP. Stephan is also correct with the Brabo , keep that leg trapped. Be kind, done correctly your opponent will submit to a blood choke, however, this can become a neck crank with leg/s hooked. One of my faves. Thanks Stephan.
I answer a reader's question about the difference between the Anaconda Choke and the Brabo choke, plus then go off onto a few tangents about how to make each of those techniques better and tighter: The Difference Between the Brabo & Anaconda Chokes... And Tips for Both!
Thank you so much for this. I've never seen the Brabo in no-gi until now, but I've used it often with the gi. I'm signing up for the newsletter now. Prost!
Great video! Really good demonstration of the Anaconda choke and brabo. From my experiences, it's always good to hook the leg after you have rolled over and ran forward to put pressure with your belly. This makes it that he cannot run back with his legs to relieve the pressure.
just want to add something on his presentation of the anaconda choke... In my case its better to do the full roll because in doing so you adjust your squeeze that sometimes break if you rotate on the other side in the simpler version. And as icing on the cake in version 1. and 2. you should catch their leg and use it as a gripping point to drive their necks even further inside cause if their legs are free they can follow you in a motion and move away from you thus relieving the pressure ... ;)
I love the anaconda choke! I come from a 10th Planet background, and the one where you do a full rotation, we call it a Gator Roll. The one where you just put him down on the side is a basic Anaconda Choke. That how we call them anyway. The Gator Roll I learned from Eddie Bravo's book 10 minutes before I went to the gym one day, and the opportunity came to me when we were rolling on that training session. That was my very first win ever! That was of course against another rookie! Since that day, the Gator Roll has always been my favourite submission! The brabo is quite similar to our D'arce Choke. Keep up the good work Stephan, I love your videos!
Awesome to find another 10pJJ guy on here! :D I love the D'arce because I've had a few instances when I try to arm drag a guy into a Chevy but he brings his knee up and makes a frame to stop me: the D'arce is right there and is NEVER expected.
I feel like there is an ezekiel variation there with the gi brabo. After you get the lapel to the opposite shoulder, before you switch hands, if you just get an elbow deep underhook, you could use the blade edge of your hand in an ezekiel choke, I think.
that is how I learned it. Barbo choke is exactly that "the Darce" One thing about Stephan he is very good guy and trys very hard and really respect that
Well, Stephen, I was taught that the Brabo is called the "D'Arce". But yes, the main difference is origin of the arm movement; whether arm in ------> out or out --------------> in.
Thank you so much for this video, I watched like ten times last night and hit both of them at open mat today. I really like your option for falling to your side on the anaconda. These are definitely going to be a big part of my game as I'm long armed for a little guy.
Btw, John Danahar really developed this choke in America. D'arce learned it from him, and Mayhem Miller named it the Darce choke. Ultimately it's just a inverted arm triangle.
nice videos, good methodic, but i think the variation of the "brabo" has some basic fails in crucial details, the choke is pretty easy to counter, if executed as shown
If I'm not mistake, which I may be, is the Brabo choke the D'arce Choke? My tip for using the d'arce choke would be the opposite which is being taught here. When I'm in Half guard, I lay on the arm closest to the ceiling of the opponent while squeezing. These are two of my favourite chokes, and very under utilized in my opinion. Great Video! Thanks for sharing! -B
Agree with cagefanatic, A=armpit B=back cuz pretty much positioned to take the back when moving to apply Brabo. I like your demonstrations...so is the Gator Roll pretty much the same as the Ananconda, or is there an additional move or two? When finishing the Anaconda I was taught to take your first step by thrusting your hips forward, you cover like 3 feet quickly and then walk your legs, overhooking your opponents top leg with yours and pull him tight applying more pressure on his neck!
Thank you man :) this really really helped... I have always been drwan to these kind of chokes and the arm triangle as my arms are middle-long and strong...so I shall be that kind of fighter? who knows but thank you so much
B for bicep (as in your opponent's left bicep/the front of their left arm in this example - only problem is that this will be confused with the Back of their arm which is incorrect!).
In the first minute of this I thought who is this guy? He is precise with his words and seems so kind! I subscribed immediately. As I continued to watch i noticed he is rough with his demonstration partner as if it were a live demonstration fight. While i think that energy is excellent for teaching us visually i can no longer think of you as kind...im sure you can be kind and are but....id be afraid to let you demonstrate on me for 6 mins haha
+lightningtreeband Those tips were pretty useful ! Chokes are a must to master in fights, but if you really want to master them you need a strong program, I suggest searching for Moorack Jiu Jitsu Miracle on Google.
With the ananconda choke could you stand up and push up with your legs and by doing so lift up to put the angle on his head for the choke? if he resists or unbalances you then I would assume you could roll over for the standard anaconda
THX for the lesson because i was in trouble with them, I did not manage to understand correctly the difference enter brabo and anaconda. Sorry for my poor english , i'm french :)
Don't lock the villain's arm in from the beginning and try the "Ninja" choke instead since you're already in that position. It's the upside-down RNC and once on, it's a high-percentage choke with hardly no escape.
Thanks! I'd had some questions about these for a long time. The brabo was one of my first favorite moves. It seems to work really well with my narrow chest and biggish arms. It seems having a narrow shoulder width makes it easier to wriggle in and give good leverage for sealing the deal one everything's in deep. Anybody else with me on that? The anaconda I'd never been able to make much of, have some ideas to try now. thx:D
I have a nice variation on the Darce/Brabo if i can't get my arm super deep on the neck, I slide my arm a little so that my wrist is through, I lock it enough to hold it then I switch my hips into him and throw my leg over the body, it's sort of like a guillotine and a darce so I call it the Darcotine when i teach it hehe.
Hi Stephan, I love the Anaconda, but can't reach my bicep against really big guys with broad backs. Is it possible to finish it by grabbing your wrist or anything instead? Thanks :)
Thank you for the video! I just recently watched Charles Oliveira and Marlon Moraes finish their opponents via Anaconda Choke. Initially it looked like a D'arce choke because of the similarities in position. :)
video on the orginin of the "darce choke", it is actually called the björn choke or bear choke, named after a norwegian Luta Livre guy, who invented the move in germany in the late 90s youtube: andyconda history of a choke
hello stephan...i am a TCM practitioner...just wanted to know. Do you have spinal misalignment from an injury that occured over 10 years ago?...Looks like it but i could be wrong.
D'arce choke sounds better than brabo

Thank you for clearing a few things up for me on your instructional. Also, thanks for sharing.
On the Gi bravo arent your left leg open for a kind of sweep or are you able to hold him down with the right leg?
is there difference between brabo and d'arce ?? 🤔
I believe a Brabo choke and the D'Arce choke are the same thing, Brabo is just a different name for it.
Brabo: B to beard.
nice one!:)
B to butface
B = blowhole
Poor old Ritchie's neck took a hammering in this video.
Thank you so much for this. I've never seen the Brabo in no-gi until now, but I've used it often with the gi. I'm signing up for the newsletter now. Prost!
Great coach, very easy to understand the little nuances in position of the hands.
signed up for the newsletter straight away,
thanks.
Very comprehensive and concise video on two similar techniques, bravo 👏🏾
Great video! Really good demonstration of the Anaconda choke and brabo. From my experiences, it's always good to hook the leg after you have rolled over and ran forward to put pressure with your belly. This makes it that he cannot run back with his legs to relieve the pressure.
This is one of the best videos from you Stephan Kesting!
Thanks for helping teach the grappling world Stephen - keep up the great work sir!

Great video!! Thanks for showing the difference, I appreciate the level of detail.
Thank you Stephan Kesting for all these amazing videos!
I describe the two chokes with regards to when you pass the arm pit.
Ananaconda (A) = After neck
Brabo (B) = Before neck
Your videos are very instructional and I appreciate how you break down this very simply. Great video thank you!
Love the way this guy explains everything.
Great videos. Really like your approach of showing how it applies to real situations and not just showing the basic technique.
one of the best training vids ive seen, and ive trained alot
Stephen Kesting rocks! Super helpful stuff. Thanks a lot!
Awesome instruction Mr. Kesting. Very visual and very detailed!! Subscribing now!
I'd been having a lot of trouble finishing the anaconda; thanks Stephan (and Richie) for the tips and video.
i was lucky enough to be at adcc 09..told the mrs we were having a weekend in barcelona...she fell for it..
great call by the way.
thank's for sharing Master, hope to try soon your teaching in the gym. thank you.

Awesome. Massive fan of yours. Keep up the good work. 👍👌💪

B for Back of the neck? Or towards the Back?
Wow. Very nice video! Subbed. You seem like a great teacher.
I'm a pure boxer with a Kung Fu background, these are entirely new to me and fascinating!
Stephan, I think your videos are awesome and informative. Keep up the great work! :)
First video of yours I've seen....Instant subscription. Thanks for your channel.
thanks for the great videos you produce.
Very informative video, thank you on an excellent job, you just earned a subscriber.
Excellent technique, sensei and uke
Great instruction. You explain the two choking techniques very well. Great Job!
B = Brabo
B = Behind the arm entry
Great vid as usual .. U always demonstrate so clearly ... Never stop ;)
Btw, John Danahar really developed this choke in America. D'arce learned it from him, and Mayhem Miller named it the Darce choke.
Ultimately it's just a inverted arm triangle.
Totaly gonna use this in judoclass today
Very helpful techniques
thanks Stephen :) Great instructional as always
Ritchie is the ultimate human B.O.B. I can't even count the number of times Stephan's tapped him in videos.
nice videos, good methodic, but i think the variation of the "brabo" has some basic fails in crucial details, the choke is pretty easy to counter, if executed as shown

Great video - keep up the good work!
B for bicep (as in your opponent's left bicep/the front of their left arm in this example - only problem is that this will be confused with the Back of their arm which is incorrect!).
B for Badass ;) Another great video. Keep up the good work my friend.
Great video. Really helpful

you talked about builds for these chokes. what about short thick bodied builds(like palhares or hector lambard)for these chokes?
This guy is awesome! I love how he teaches.
For the squeeze do we squeeze our elbows together? I am confused on the specifics of how to squeeze.
very good, cant wait to try this on my boy with the thick neck, i can never RNC him. Maybe this will work!
Brabo is just the original label for the submission in Brazil... In the USA, most people refer to this submission as the Darce Choke.
On the Gi brabo, arent you open for a kind of sweep on your left leg? Or are you able to keep him down with the right leg?
B is for BASE OF THE SKULL. Hope that helps :)
nice demo
Thank you!!! I got so many bs responses at my gym that I stopped asking.
I am also interested in knowing how to apply the clothing techniques when someone is wearing a T-Shirt not martial arts clothes..
+lightningtreeband Those tips were pretty useful ! Chokes are a must to master in fights, but if you really want to master them you need a strong program, I suggest searching for Moorack Jiu Jitsu Miracle on Google.

b for Brachial. Your hand is on the brachial plexus. Great video!
Very nice as always!
THX for the lesson because i was in trouble with them, I did not manage to understand correctly the difference enter brabo and anaconda.
Sorry for my poor english , i'm french :)
I’m a wrestler could I use the turn instead of the roll for a pin. Because sometimes on really good opponents they catch you half way through the roll
Ali Najafi fake a seatbelt with the under hook when they pressure back to avoid it they give you the roll
Thanks Stephan,
B from Behind.
EXCELLENT EXPLANATION STEPHEN OMG THANK YOU!!! 🔥🔥🔥🏆🏆🏆🥋🥋🥋
good stuff - also, [and it helps], he seems like a nice guy.
Great video! Thank you.
Thanks a lot very well done

So this is the same as the D'arce right?
Can you do the anaconda choke rolling the opposite way? Figure fore towards bottom instead of top?
Which position will be more advantageous to maybe get one hand free to remove his pants before the mount?
Rear naked choke maybe?
Isn't Brabo without the Gi a Darce choke?
is the darce choke and the brabo choke the same move or is there any difference?
261parasiempre same. Some say darce some say brabo.
Hi Stephan, I love the Anaconda, but can't reach my bicep against really big guys with broad backs. Is it possible to finish it by grabbing your wrist or anything instead? Thanks :)

I just recently watched Charles Oliveira and Marlon Moraes finish their opponents via
Anaconda Choke. Initially it looked like a D'arce choke because of the similarities in position. :)
I haven't watched the whole thing yet but I like to push the head down far enough to get a gable grip and then crank them down to lock the arm in.
Coach Stephen, I was thinking B for Beard but that only works with men.
when i roll during anaconda and try to pressure him with my belly, he just climbs out the way im going towards him.
I would like to know if I can use Anaconda Choke in BJJ ? Don´t the position force the neck (cervical), which is not allow ?
b for BRAIN most important tool on the matt and what your ultimately limiting blood flow to
