Lighthouse - Maple Music Junket, Massey Hall, March 10, 1972 (One Fine Morning)

  • A very rare video from Lighthouse's original era with the band performing One Fine Morning on March 10, 1972 during the Maple Music junket at Massey Hall in Toronto, prefaced by some remarks from the band's late co-founder Skip Prokop.
The Maple Music junket was a bold move by a few music industry mavericks. Music journalist Ritchie York and Arnold Gosewich (who was president of Capitol Records Canada) invited about 100 European record producers and reporters to Canada for an all-expenses-paid trip to experience the music scene in the great white north.
The Maple Music Junket would introduce international producers to an unforgettable lineup of Canadian talent, starting in Montreal and wrapping up in Toronto with back-to-back concerts at Massey Hall.

I have no idea how this amazing video came up on my scene but I am very grateful that this took me back to a concert that I was at. I grew up in a part of Toronto called South Etobicoke when Skip Prokop lived two blocks from where I did. I had just started high school when he and his first band The Paupers used to practice in the front room of his parent's house and they would let us listen and watch through the window from the porch. I always loved music and joined the school band playing drums. I had a single mom in a blue collar community and after Skip gave me me first pair of real drum sticks I used to practice in the basement hitting upside down buckets and boxes. This is actually a true story and I didn't miss many concerts by Lighthouse one of Canada's best ever rock band.

Skip Prokop & Bob McBride lived in the same apartment building as my family in 1971. I heard plenty of rehearsals, acapellas etc. Good memories at 40 Stevenson Rd. Rexdale ON Canada! And yes they did play our high school North Albion Collegiate Institute (NACI)

I saw them at their first gig @ the Rock Pile in Toronto also spoke with Prokop's Dad in the audience @ a Pauper's performance and Chad Allen & the Expressions aka the Guess Who also performed. Prokop's Dad indicated that Skip entered a drum competition (rudiments) in the U.S. which he won.

What I would give to see a full concert of theirs from this era. If only time travel were possible. Such an amazing underrated band. RIP Skip.

Skip's absolutely right about Lighthouse getting the short end of the stick from the promoters. It would have been great to see Lighthouse perform 2-3 songs. A factor could be that rock music wasn't as widespread as it is today and someone didn't want to upset the older patrons of Massey Hall. Rest in peace, Bob and Skip. We miss you.

    • @djdissi

Rock music had long been a mainstay by this point. This was the 70s. Not the 50s. Rock had been widespread for years by then and brought in more revenue than any other genre

One of the BEST songs I have ever heard. ITS SO Fn GOOD… Just sit back and really listen to them all jam, from keys, horns, tambourine, drums..ECT..ECT.. one big jam session. But it’s the only song that I found that sounds like this. Do they have any others songs like this, I love the horns.

I remember hearing this song in my sister's new 72 Super Beetle. I remember buying the 8-track at a Kmart and driving around with her listening to this song and others from that era. Today I'm driving around in my Beetle listening to this on satellite radio. So true that some things don't change very much

I saw Lighthouse at De La Salle High School in Toronto 1969,70?
They were just so good . I love listening to their sound all these years. So sad, such talent is taken by drugs:((

Bob McBride did not die from drugs!! I know his daughter so I know the truth, he had a massive brain hemorage (ughhh can never spell it right), he was "clean" and doing well and POOF!! ...we never know when our time is up, it's been 50 years since I was at their concerts here in Manitoba, and am still listening to especially Bob's beautiful voice/ songs

Interesting to see the trombone player using a valve tromba verses a slide trombone. I wonder what prompted that decision so many decades ago. Great song. Love the horns.

    • @smctrout4423

People who play valve trombones usually switch from a valve instrument and don't want to learn the slide.
