    Awesome to watch ...such a soft and delicate placement of the blade...and the application of smooth power to follow.. and such great rythm too

    I started rowing in spring of my sophomore year of high school and my captain, a senior at the time, would show us this video at least once every time we did team film. Flash forward to my senior year and now we are using this as an example to send to new rowers. I always come back to this video I have probably watched it at least 100 times. Aram Training's breakdown of this footage and others of the NZ 8+ has become almost a comfort movie for me lol. Thank You Mr. O'Connor.

    The benchmark. Such efficiency through the recovery movement.

  • @marias7328
    @marias7328 3 года назад +39

    Definitely using this as an example to my rowers for how NOT to throw your body over the rigger while rotating at the catch... Very smooth. Very technical.

    • @tonyoconnor8690
      @tonyoconnor8690  3 года назад +34

      We used to think about all body movement (except a little relaxed rotation) ceasing by half slide. After that the boat comes to meet the rower. Another way to think about it is to focus on your belly button and let that move to the catch position, not focusing on the (already stretched out) shoulder. Glad you find the video useful. Thats why they are up here.

      @@tonyoconnor8690 I love using the belly button analogy with the kids! And that is an excellent way to describe upper body movement on the recovery-- thank you. I'm screenshotting this reply. 😄

    Everything is done in unison & harmony with the boat and the water. Superb! Congratulations on winning Gold you Kiwi legends: Thomas Mackintosh, Hamish Bond, Tom Murray, Michael Brake, Daniel Williamson, Phillip Wilson, Shaun Kirkham, Matt Macdonald (you make it look so easy) and Sam Bosworth who claimed the first Olympic men's eight title for New Zealand since Munich 1972. I loved the final the way you took on the World's top crews, rowed your own race and got to that line first!
    Also, hats off to Hamish Bond rowing in 2 on his 3rd consecutive Olympic Gold victory. There's an old saying: "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." I get it, sure, single minded determination to win whatever it takes. I like the saying: "Winning isn't the only thing, but it is everything." Everything it took, including friendships, teamwork, etc.. to cover all bases and succeed. Congratulations to your coach Tony O'Connor! Is there any particular reason that this crew starts squaring up their blades earlier than say for example the British crew? Is it just a rowing style thing or is there actual advantages of starting to square up so early? I’m a high school rower with similar feathering style but I was debating to start squaring up later after watching most of the elite level 8s who tend to square up comparably late, with this being an notable outlier. Thanks a lot and congrats on a successful Olympic!

      Kyle, It's not something we worried about too much. The boys slipped into this and so long as they and the blade were ready for the entry/connection I didn't really care when they squared up.
