The video seems really relevant to what the point of the song is. How the kids are all under a spotlight under the stage lights, their flaws completely on display, I think it's meant to be jarring and make you feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile the adults are forced to reckon with their negligence as guardians from the audience. When you asked what the point of the song is, personally my interpretation is that there's a far bigger picture. The singer doesn't directly reference it, but the connotation is that if children are so important to us all, then why aren't people mindful of what traumatizes them? Lest we project our own desensitization onto them and they end up becoming cold too. Hence the lyric: "But both boy and girl were glad, cause one kid had it worse than that” ...kind of has a tragic cat's in the cradle theme.
This was so relevant at the time and even more now. We lose young people 'cos of the bulling what ever reasons and if children can't feel safe in schools... where the will? I feel you beautiful woman! This is a hard hitting song!
Hey Sincerely, K.S.O., The first time I believe I remember hearing this song was in Dumb and Dumber!!! Watch Dumb and Dumber and you'll hear the song being played in the scene where Lloyd pulls up on that motorized scooter
I think it's about empathy, which you have so much and may explain why you got emotional. This song taught a young me to have compassion for people's blemishes or differences and I'm forever thankful.
He took experiences in his life and made this song except for the last verse. It's about a girl who's parents were super religious and would start chanting and shaking on the floor. The girl was embarrassed but that was her parents so she would freak out
If by " about " you mean what the intent was , it was basically about empathy. In each verse , the kid is said to be trying to explain the situation implying that they were being looked at as curiosities or worse as he states in the bridge " one kid had it worse than that. " He's not laughing at them or judging them , he's trying to understand the situation they've found themselves in and perhaps why he is feeling as he is towards them. When you feel for someone else's plight without having experienced their situation yourself , that's the nature of empathy.
I have all their albums still to this day and listen to them regularly. Years go I found a track online of them singing the first Noel. It's probably my favorite version of the song due to the singers voice lol
Absolutely magnificent song and the bridge is like a flood of bright light. So awesome! Three scenarios in this song but all about the same person, the writer. The smirk says it all. The car accident (s) in his past also gave the name... The birthmark on his back and the Pentecostal Church... Look at the people in the pews "lurching" and etc. the kid doesn't understand, but maybe he really does Getting it out in the air until the bridge and all that light comes down and the freedom that comes with it. So simple yet so brilliant!
There are tales in medicine about how extreme trauma can shock a person so badly that their hair turns white, partially or entirely, and usually forever after. I went to a school in 5th grade that required phys ed & showering. I was very uncomfortable with stripping down to shower with the other girls, so mostly didn't, and it cost me grades and sometimes trips to the principal's office. Schools just MAKE you do this, even if it's horribly uncomfortable or embarrassing for the child. But you ask what the song means. It's about being different and how others will pounce on those who don't or can't conform. The time away from school followed by reappearance with hair that's changed color. The girl refusing to change with the other girls, which already sets her apart. But then, it turns out she probably knew she would be made fun of for the birthmarks. (The lead singer, who wrote this song, has spoken in interview how he has a birthmark at the base of his spine that was the cause of much bullying when he was in school.) The boy with the strict religious parents in an atypical religion. Again, his having to go straight home after school set him apart and set him up for scrutiny, but then the Holy Roller church his parents went to would be fodder for teasing at school. All 3 kids were what other kids would call 'weird', so perfect for targeting with abuse. The song is about that state of being different and having no way to do anything about it. And yes, it's a sad way to live. Your empathy read correctly what your logic struggled with. The video portrayed a play within a song performance. Kids who are different live their life on display, like they're on stage, and other kids act like they have the right to critique the 'different kids'. So this 'school performance' was of the lives of these 'different' kids. I believe the parents of the Accident Kid cringe briefly in the audience, but there is worse response of the Holy Roller Kid's parents, who react with disapproval & displeasure, maybe that their 'secret' is now openly public. The Holy Roller Kid certainly looked nervous seeing his parents in the audience. And that's how it is when your life is a public story, when others thoughtlessly and insensitively discuss what is for you your life. The video is an interesting interpretation of the song. Not an exact factual representation, but artistically metaphoric. I loved this band the moment I heard the first song. I have 2 of their albums, both really good.
Head injuries that break the scalp usually make the hair white when it grows back. How badly was his head injured ad by who? The girl had birthmarks all over her body. Birthmarks or bruises? The last child I feel the most sorry for. I have to congratulate the actress who played his mother. If you ever see a woman look at you like that, run run far away!
Brad Roberts from CTD himself has a large birthmark on his back and that particular verse was inspired by his own childhood and how self conscious he felt about the birthmark due to being bullied and made fun of for it
Really resonated with me at the time it came out. The stories, we all experience the feelings that you’re like an outcast but it was about how people don’t realise the effect it has on the children growing up. No one realised. His voice is amazing, no doubt. This was an anthem for everyone who didn’t feel they fit in. Just my experience when I first heard it. Metaphors but also blatant observations. It still makes me emotional too, don’t worry
Brad Roberts has one of my all time favourite singing voices. The depths he can hit (that make the low "Mmm" in the chorus feel kinda high) blow me away, even after decades of listening to him. The other voice I'll always love was that of the late great Chris Cornell. Both of them, in their own respective ways, touch this amazing quality that I've yet to hear again.
Yup this always reminds of “Dumb and Dumber” ....this song plays after Jim Carey drove 6 hours in the wrong direction but totally redeems himself after he trades their dog van for a mini bike that gets 60 miles to the gallon
This was a lovely reaction, KSO, thank you for posting it. I see what you’re getting at with the stories being metaphors for deeper tragedies in these kids' lives, but I have to say the song always worked really well for me just taking the stories straight up at face value - in fact I think it made it a more powerful piece. Being away from school recovering from an accident, growing up with birthmarks and being painfully self-conscious about them, and having a family with unusual religious observances that's always been part of your life but you find out seems outlandish to those around you... I think it's a really interesting story about how weirdly intense life can be for a child when even a small thing about you makes you different from the group. I also really like the band's decision to leave so much of that for the listener to pick out from between the lines. As for the video clip, I think the disapproving parents were meant to be the churchgoing parents in the third verse, who disapprove of the theatre piece on general principles but especially don't like their son up on stage portraying them. (I think the stage performance is a lovely bit of storytelling, blurring the performances with the lives of the performers, both the map and the territory.) Oh, and Weird Al Yankovic did his own version of this called "Headline News" with some stories you might recognise :)
I agree. The only thing I question is why the first two thought the third had it harder? Could it be because the first two dealt with physical trauma while the third dealt with emotional trauma?
All three stories are based off the singers own experiences to some extent. The white hair reference is from a story about a boater who got to close to niagra falls. Knowing he was gonna die his hair supposedly changed to white from pure fear
Such a simple (yet profound) song and people have such trouble interpreting it. Thank goodness the three-part structure helps, and if we imagine that the humming chorus takes the place of the singer's opinion or judgment on the individual stories, then the listeners have been invited to judge and interpret for themselves.Three children, three tragedies, three upbringings seriously damaged in three different ways. One by a random accident, one by a defect of birth but - crucially - the worst damage is inflicted by parents whose religion cut them off from the real world and was embarrassing to witness. The 'disapproving' couple are the religious ones who cannot accept their responsibility for the kid's 'damage', while the other parents rejoice that their children have survived the trauma and told the story (stopped keeping it secret) so well in the form of the school play. The message is therefore that life can be made difficult by random events or your physical health but it is far worse - and far more damaging - to inflict an absurd belief system on your children and leave them to deal with the psychological consequences.
Damn.. I'm 47 now and haven't listened to this song in probably about 20 years, but I remember it. I'm a guy, but back in primary school I was "that girl who wouldn't change with the girls in the change room". Until they made me. And yeah, they were totally bithmarks. :/ This hit harder than I expected it to.
Great Canadian group! Saw them live three times here in Canada. Excellent! This was their big international top ten hit but they had several other successful songs here in Canada. Good creative music! ♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
It's supposed to make you cry. It's beautiful. The music is amazing, the harmony between Brand and Ellen is amazing, the musicians in this band are unreal. The lyrics and the story are about kids going through being judged. By parents and by other kids. Kids who go through trauma. A girl who could be covered in birthmarks or bruises? Another child forced to go to an overly strict upbringing with parents who won't let him have friends or hang out with the other kids, you notice they come in as the play is in progress, just at their own son's part and they disapprove. He can't please them. He's being judged all the way around. Along with the gorgeous choral music and voices, it's sad. It's beautiful. You're right.
Brad Roberts who's the singer in Crash Test Dummies himself has a large birthmark on his back, that particular verse is inspired by his own childhood and how self-conscious he felt about it and how he was made fun of it for it
I've been listening to this song since I was 12 and I'm about to be 41 and still listening to it, it's one of my favorites. I've never cried listening to this until I saw your reaction. It has made me grateful to have chosen a career path helping children who aren't able to move as normal developing children do and now I'm not only helping children who have physical disabilities, but I'm helping those who are deaf as well. Your reaction was so beautiful. ❤
Her child was the boy who had it “worse”. The Christian mom and dad were upset because the boy talked about their church to the school and now their life was literally on stage for all the world to see. Hmmm
I picture all of the kids around the same age - maybe middle school or so. An age where all you want to do is fit in. Yet here they are - having to deal with the social embarrassment of conditions beyond their control. And it pushes them to the fringes.
If you look back at the video, it's divided in three just like the children of the song and it tells their stories: first the kid in the car crash, second the girl with the purple spots on her skin and third the boy not having fun in the show with the priest... the third boy being the child of that snobbish couple. It's a song about differences, how adults live them and how children can be affected by them.
Very interesting analogy. I always thought this song was about bullying, or kids making fun of other kids in school. When I went to school, kids picked on other kids a lot and there really wasn't any public outrage against bullying, so it was something that was pretty normal. It sounds to me like these kids were being picked on at school, especially the religious boy, because kids can be really cruel about what they don't understand.
Was interesting to hear your thoughts after first seeing your emotional reaction. Thank you. I first heard this song when it was popular in the 90s, I think I was about 8-9 years old and I just remember getting this tight feeling in my gut, the kind when something shocks you and you realise the situation is so hopeless and you can’t do anything about it...watching this brought it all back! I have since gone onto write songs myself and I always make sure I leave the listener with some hope, no matter how hopeless the situation. I think the bridge/chorus before the 3rd child verse in this song was an attempt at that. We all need hope!!! But I just so vividly remember this song as one of my earliest memories of the dissonance and confusion the lyrics/melody/chord arrangement of a song can bring. This song was well crafted to provoke our emotions, by a simple non biased story telling approach. Very powerful.
For the first, there ARE cases if hair changing white suddenly due to trauma-"Canities subita, also called Marie Antoinette syndrome or Thomas More syndrome, is an alleged condition of hair turning white overnight due to stress or trauma."
The songwriter later divulged that whenever he was asked about the intended meaning, he would be dishonest in an attempt to allow the audience more room for interpretation. For whatever reason, he was eager to avoid stomping on how people reacted to the song. According to the older Brad Roberts, he was trying for a theme of outsider children built from things he heard about as child. The second and third stories were about other kids he knew and the first is from a popular tale of a man who was survived certain death but his hair turned white.
I would like to try and help you understand the point of this song since you asked. According to Brad, the lead singer, mmm mmm mmm mmm is really just a humming tune of contemplating how children are affected in various situations of daily culture and traumas. It really is deep stuff, much like his voice. My favorite song they ever did is a rarity recorded at Sacred Heart studios where I'm from here in Duluth MN. The Unforgiven Ones, I believe he hit his deepest most darkest and haunting note on that one ruclips.net/video/vrfYVY5S79Q/видео.html
In my opinion, the song purpose is to invite people on focussing on children's emotional change. There is one sentence he repeats in the three of the verses. "He/she couldn't quite explain that", as the three of the situations were meant to be explained. I mean, if the first guy was tougher he'd probably had the car crash but he wouldn't have grown white hair, so did the birthmark girl, going to the bathroom with the other girls and telling them to go fuck themselves if they tried to bully her, furthermore, the last and most important one, he would have escape from that bunch of religious psychopaths and ending who knows where. You know what I mean? I think the song invites the parents to talk to their kid, because when you try to explain something, that is the moment in witch you should realize that you have nothing to explain. Because it's not your fault if you had a car crash, it's not your fault if you have birthmarks on your skin, and it's not your fault if your parents are asshole. I mean, don't misunderstand me, not all parents are assholes, but those of the last kid... well, for being called assholes they had it comming. Love is the way❤️❤️❤️
Do a video reacting for the following band from the 90`s and this song (the name is correct!): "Blind Melon - Change" I think you (and your audience) are going to be very surprised (in a good way) for this one! Thanks for this one!
When I first saw and heard this song, I thought it was quite weird, but good at the same time. I think you should listen to Weird Al Yankovic as he has done a version called Headline News. He does a brilliant approximation of them, and I would say it gives this song a continuation in a way.
It amazes me how many people don't understand this song. There was no accident. There were no actual birthmarks. It is all about physical abuse by parents who were crazy religious zealots. The kids were afraid to turn their parents in.
Sin this is why I love your reactions, brad & lex listen to the same song and they didn't know anything bout the song ,reason being they pause pause to much and they were Watching the lyrics👕💋❤🤓 brad &lex channel they did this song no justice !
Reuploaded. The other one was blocked to about 45% of my audience. With the guidance of another reactor, it’s up for all.

It's about how difference is used to justify all sort of ill will.
Hey Sincerely, K.S.O., The first time I believe I remember hearing this song was in Dumb and Dumber!!! Watch Dumb and Dumber and you'll hear the song being played in the scene where Lloyd pulls up on that motorized scooter
I cry every time I hear this song thinking about all children made outcasts and bullied by things beyond their control.
Me too, adults can be so very heartless.
It was about events in the singer's life and he wrote the lyrics.
The singer’s voice is just gorgeous. This song is as moving as heart-wrenching. ♥️
30 year later and this song still amazed people.
I wish i could listen to to this song for the first time onece again.
I miss the 90´s so bad...
I think it's about empathy, which you have so much and may explain why you got emotional. This song taught a young me to have compassion for people's blemishes or differences and I'm forever thankful.
The song is about accepting people's differences.
Lmao no it's not
Yea..it's not. He's talking about his life. He's the boy at the end with the strict religious parents.
He took experiences in his life and made this song except for the last verse. It's about a girl who's parents were super religious and would start chanting and shaking on the floor. The girl was embarrassed but that was her parents so she would freak out

This is a pretty accurate depiction of childhood trauma. These traumas often go on to describe, if not define, us as adults.
Superman’s Song and God Shuffled His Feet are two more great songs by this group . Amazing vocals
LOVE both of those songs!!
They have a ton of great and unique songs. Many better than those 2, i'd argue.
Totally agree.
I have all their albums still to this day and listen to them regularly. Years go I found a track online of them singing the first Noel. It's probably my favorite version of the song due to the singers voice lol
As a kid who looked different from most ppl. I loved this song so much. I have vitiligo and am in no control over it. Kids can be cruel
You are beautiful Natalie, I hope you know that and that I am sincere as the sun rises every day. ❤🫂
But you ask what the song means. It's about being different and how others will pounce on those who don't or can't conform. You're so insightful with your reaction and paying attention to the lyrics, I enjoy watching.
You are crying because we've all either been bullied or seen it first hand. Its a lovely song and has voice is emotional....
Head injuries that break the scalp usually make the hair white when it grows back. How badly was his head injured ad by who? The girl had birthmarks all over her body. Birthmarks or bruises? The whole album is excellent. And the band members are really decent people and respect their fans.

Their stories as told are tragic enough.
I agree. The only thing I question is why the first two thought the third had it harder? Could it be because the first two dealt with physical trauma while the third dealt with emotional trauma?
All of God Shuffled His Feet, especially the title track, is phenomenal. This is one of my Childhood Cornerstone Albums.
You’re feeling emotional because you can empathise with the children in the song and their stories which makes you a good human being.
One of the most connecting songs I've ever known. One of the few that can make my body sway.
All three stories are based off the singers own experiences to some extent. The white hair reference is from a story about a boater who got to close to niagra falls. Knowing he was gonna die his hair supposedly changed to white from pure fear
What an amazing voice I love the harmonies as well

Im a man, 51 years old i cry every time i hear this song since it came out. It reminds me of my childhood.

I was struck by the band's rhythm section brilliantly played and recorded .Exceptional sound through the entire album
Is perfectly fine to feel that way , there. Thats what music and the messige from it does. Is pure magic.
gotta love the harmony
My heart even at the humming parts 😍
think the point is to just pay attention. Some cries for help r silent
the mmm represents the code of silence.
about abuse
The lead singer is singing about his life. He's the boy at the end with a strict religious parents.
Brad Roberts who's the singer in Crash Test Dummies himself has a large birthmark on his back, that particular verse is inspired by his own childhood and how self-conscious he felt about it and how he was made fun of it for it
I love your interpretation on this song. I've actually always really liked it, but I never really thought about it in metaphors or parables.
I've been listening to this song since I was 12 and I'm about to be 41 and still listening to it, it's one of my favorites. I've never cried listening to this until I saw your reaction. I know why you found yourself getting emotional , because your smart and your sensitive, and the song warranted it. Keep up the good work, thank you.
He was a big XTC fan, you can hear that in parts of this song.
Im here mom. Great reaction to a great song. We all have scars...dont we?
Lovely lady, you need to do The Superman Song. Great song.
Song played in Jim Carrey film " Dum & Dumber" 1994 🎵🎵
Its about child abuse. All three were abused and it was covered up - hence nervous parents in the crowd 😢
Her child was the boy who had it “worse”. The Christian mom and dad were upset because the boy talked about their church to the school and now their life was literally on stage for all the world to see. Hmmm
Song therapy session
They have a few really great songs "supermans song" is another one.
Correction....they have a ton of great songs
Unique. Have always loved this song. I'm 59.
The song is based on 3 real life stories when the singer was growing up in Manitoba, Canada.
I picture all of the kids around the same age - maybe middle school or so. An age where all you want to do is fit in. Yet here they are - having to deal with the social embarrassment of conditions beyond their control. And it pushes them to the fringes.

I must have listened to this a thousand times when it came out. Never payed attention to the lyrics. Very interesting.
I like that you get the idea of the song so fast... I've seen many videos of people who dosen't understand and just said that those are weird lyrics.
I'm brazilian, and this song reminds me of the accident with flight 1907, it is considered the second biggest air accident in Brazil🥺💔
The kid who got in an accidents hair turned white from a car crash.

Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this song called "Headline News" and it's hilarious.
I 😢 cry
I can't get through this song without 😭 too
Into The Ocean by Blue October would be a good one. I think the same person who directed this video made that one too.
Mmmmm hermoso tema lo escucho y me llena de sensaciones
Thoughtful and on nerving the video suits it love you
oh please react to weird al's parody of this, headline news

Do a video reacting for the following band from the 90`s and this song (the name is correct!):
"Blind Melon - Change"
I think you (and your audience) are going to be very surprised (in a good way) for this one! Thanks for this one!
youve gotta watch the Weird Al parody!
Do his complete catalog
Im not crying... You're crying...💔😭💔😭💔
When I first saw and heard this song, I thought it was quite weird, but good at the same time.
I think you should listen to Weird Al Yankovic as he has done a version called Headline News. He does a brilliant approximation of them, and I would say it gives this song a continuation in a way.
From the same era- listen to the official music video for Natalie Merchant's Wonder. I think you'll find it uplifting and sweet.
She looks so much like some one i'm dating right now lol. besides that i've always loved this song the chorus at the end is amazing!.
Weird Al's version is amazing too, maybe not so poignant but.... still amazing.
Weird Al parody is called Headline News. Its good
I know you did this a long time ago, but I was so moved by your reaction and wanted to tell you.

Convoy by CW McCall
Great choice. Love the Crash Test Dummies. What a voice!
is this a re-upload? I have a vivid memory of you reacting to this before.
Yes it is
It amazes me how many people don't understand this song.
