    Something you didn't address, which can be super important here:
    Since Logic's transient detection isn't super accurate (it often sets kick transients 1-2ms after the transient), you're going to get lots of very weird artefacts by doing this, since it will either cut off or separate the click of the transient from the kick. Usually this isn't incredibly obvious to an untrained ear, but it makes your drums sound messy and subtly screws with the sense of flow.
    If you want to do this properly, you HAVE to manually check every single transient marker before quantising, or quantise manually and set all the flex markers by hand.
    You've got to pay attention to the phase relationships between microphones as well, and make sure you're grabbing transients from your close mics, and not overheads or room mics.

    • @mosstet
      @mosstet 4 года назад +4

      Thanks for going into further detail. I had some issues with phase today. I was using the rhythm flex option though.
      What exactly do you mean about only grabbing close mics? If it's grouped, doesnt it grab them all?

      On the money 10000% this happened to me last week and had no idea how to fix it!! After hours of editing drums I ended up having to midi in the kick😭😭😭

      @@mosstet I think is addressed in the video, before clicking flextime the only tracks you should click with the Q are the kick snare and tom, logic will use these as the way to find the timing of the song

    • @jamesdoctor8079
      @jamesdoctor8079 3 года назад +5

      @@SoundSignals what op is saying, is that before starting the process of flex time with Q on - one should go in and edit the transients for the kick and snare manually so that logic has a reference that makes sense. letting logic do this often screws everything up

      @@MusicTechHelpGuy Absolutely, and you did a good job at that. Sorry about the mini rant, I just don't really like the "everything quantized" trend. You feel like the drum track you used in the video was better after quantizing it ? Or it is for ease of work when using virtual instruments and effects that tend to be more "on the grid" ?

I CAN PLAY LIVE BUT I'M A STUDIO PRODUCER SO I SPEND HOURS PRACTICING DRUMMING TO THE CLICK AND I WOULD GET IT ABOUT 95 PERCENT ON THE GRID WITH MAYBE 1 OR 2 MESS UPS ON THE KICK OR CUZ OF THE LATENCY, OR A LATE SNARE HIT BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT WOULD BE WHERE I WANT IT... WHAT IVE LEARN IS YOU GOTTA MAKE SURE YOU HIT THE DRUM A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE THE CLICK WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING AND IT WILL RECORD PERFECT ON THE GRID.... IF YOU PLAYING RIGHT ON POINT WITH THE CLICK IT WILL RECORD LATE.. BUT YOU MY FRIEND!!!! JUST HELPED ME SOLVE THE LAST 10% OF MY PROBLEMS BRO... AND ONCE YOU GROUP THE DRUMS AND ADD THE QUANTIZE FUNCTION YOU CAN SLOW DOWN AND SPEED UP YOUR LIVE DRUMS!!!!! GREAT JOB!!! YOU JUST EARNED YOURSELF A SUBSCRIBER AND LIKE AND COMMENT!!! Yes. In this video , everything turned out smoothly . My experience has not shown very good results . I came to the fact that I am making a drum track into small fragments and editing it . Every time you need to pay attention to how the cymbals and hi-hat sound. Sometimes there is an unnatural sound . If you do not pay attention to this , then all the work will have to be redone . I advise you to always leave the original entry . This will allow you to at least return to the zero mark . Yes. It 's exhausting , but I couldn 't do it any other way . Thanks for the video

    Not to bash this video or anything, actually, I found this tutorial quite helpful. BUT In the example, you play it sounds to me though, as if the drums are, not all that out of place, but more a little bit shifted from the click, due to the delay of the recording, also maybe, with another delay between the overheads/room mics and the close mics, due to the different distance to the microphones. I feel fixing this first by nudging the tracks individually and fixing phase issues with that, could be a way more natural edit, that kind of deals with the same problem. I'm not saying that this technic should not be used. I, for example, would use this a lot to fix real errors, when notes are absolutely out of place or a complete drum fill is dragging or something like that.

    I looked this up as I am editing a play through a friend did with quintuplets sextuplets and septuplets in it for his masters.
    I'm assuming the quickest was to deal with this is to separate the audio into its respective subdivisions and quantise each to each different division?
    It's just basically a reference to what was played out of time for future practice and performances.

    I've just tried doing this on a song that's slightly swung, but Logic just completely messes up the drums, like MASSIVELY ruins everything even though the drummer played pretty well in time. Any advice or reason why Logic would behave this way? I experimented with using different quantisation values but they all seemed to throw it off. Also Logic sometimes is very inaccurate with it's placement of the flex markers... have you experienced this too?

    Very well explained. In a real world scenario let's say you have 5 drum takes. I'd love to know your approach to combining quantization during take selection. For example, let's say you quick-swipe comp together a decent take, but there are a few out-of-time hits. Would you get as close as possible to creating a comp via swipe, and THEN quantize the audio of one of the underlying takes?

    • @jwinmedia

      Yes. Get a good take comped then flatten and merge the drum tracks. THEN do the quantization.

    Not sure what happened.. I did this, and it worked great all the way through the song, I went back to listen from the beginning - and the drums were still off. It was as if I had not made any adjustments at all.
    Is this because the drum tracks were recorded straight through, and weren't sectioned off (i.e. verse, chorus, bridge, etc.)?

  • @Eduaro2U
    @Eduaro2U 4 года назад

    Hey Josh, Bit late on this one - but, great info which I'm trying to put into practice - though unsuccessfully.
    I'm trying something similar with guitar - recording multi-track (i.e - 2 mics on an amp; plus D.I) - recording a riff based idea without a click - relatively good time - but not perfect. Apply Smart Tempo which gives a good idea of tempo - though a bit wobbly. I then try to flatten the tempo to a constant pulse - and add bass and drums (MIDI).
    Though things go a bit all over the place:- Smart tempo defaulted the tempo being twice as fast as my actual feel - and misinterpreted some of the picky-picky 16th pattern placing the beat on the wrong transient etc. So, what would be the best course of action to overcome the inaccuracies - Flex time? Smart tempo. Something else? Do you have a course that covers instances like this?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  2 года назад

      It might be that you have a recording issue, or a phase or alignment issue. If certain mics are really far behind the close mics, like your room or overheads, this can cause issues when time aligning with flex time, especially if your hearing an "echoey" effect. Try starting from scratch, and zoom in really close on the waveforms, and make sure they are in alignment first, then add the flex and see if that helps.

I then remove the card and insert it into my PC where I can open the .wav file with software. I can't find quantizing software unless Im required to run a midi setup and a full DAW. In case of triplets select 12 or 24 instead the 16 division in the project and Quantize options

      @@TutorialesEnTuIdioma You're right, but if there's a section of triplets you'd have to edit them all individually. Is there a way to edit a specific section in 8 or 16th notes and different sections for instance in 12 or 24th notes?

      Wessel van der Spek yeah it’s possible. Select the region you want to edit, then go to the Inspector Cuantize Menu and select 12 or 24 for that specific region. The go back to 16ths on the rest of the regions that have no triplets

    once you are done editing, what is your best method to "print" the results to (a) new file(s) so you can then turn the flex time off?

      I usually ungroup the tracks, then use the Command-J function to JOIN/CONSOLIDATE all of the flex edits into new regions. The problem with Logic is that if your drums are already on ONE region per track, you can use the JOIN function, so I usually TRICK the join function by copy and pasting a small extra clip after each track, then using the Command-J function, then I go back and trim off that extra audio. I wish Logic had a proper Consolidate function like Pro Tools.

      cool, that's the workaround i already use, i thought there might be a better way but i guess not. sometimes logic is not so logical....

      when you 'join' the flexed track does the new region print the movments? or are the movements you made not printed and flex time has to be on to have the movements recognized'? I usually bounce each track in place to a new track to avoid using processing with flex time being on.

    • @nicebluejay
      @nicebluejay 6 лет назад

      yes, it prints the movements, so after joining you may turn off flex mode for that track and the changes you made will stay permanently.

      You can use the bounce in place function (ctrl + cmd + B) instead

    can you tell us what mics you used to record your drums?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy

      I'm not exactly sure in this video. I switch it up every time depending on the song/artist. A common set up I start with is: Audix D6 Kick In, U47 clone on Kick Out, Shure SM57 or 7B on Snare Top, L251 Clone on Snare Side, Sennheiser e604 on Toms (basically identical sounding as an SM57) or MD421 for a more bright, punchy sound. Overheads I use a pair of Peluso P12's or Earthworks DK25's, and for rooms prefer any pair of ribbon mics. I usually throw any leftover condenser on the hi hat, since it barely ends up in mix most of the time.

    Does anybody know if I should be quantizing before or after time-aligning (aka phase aligning)?

      Great Question. If the relationships stay the same, then prior. If all transients are moved to the markers, it would undo the phase adjustment, right? Who can confirm the best approach?

    is there anyway to use remove silence for big snare hits in logic instead of ghost notes? Here's how to do it in Protools : ruclips.net/video/3jpH2gfZu_k/видео.html
