Old School vs Modern Psytrance Production

  • The inception of Psytrance culture dates back several years, marking a significant period in the evolution of musical genres. Presently, we find ourselves in an era characterized by exponential advancements in technology, a factor that profoundly influences music production. While modern technology has undoubtedly enhanced the quality of music production, it's important to acknowledge certain advantages inherent in old-school production techniques. Contemporary technology, especially in the digital realm, offers a plethora of choices. However, this abundance of options is not always beneficial. In contrast, a few years ago, producers had to contend with limited resources and fewer choices. This scarcity, I believe, necessitated a more meticulous and attentive approach to utilizing available equipment. The limited choices and equipment forced producers to be more creative and resourceful.Today's technology, with its myriad of options and visually appealing graphical user interfaces (GUIs), can sometimes lead to distractions. These distractions may cause producers to make decisions based more on visual appeal than on auditory quality. In his video, E-Clip touches upon just a fraction of the broader discussion comparing old-school and modern production techniques, providing insight into how these two eras contrast and complement each other in the realm of Psytrance music production.

Old school is the best every artist came with new ideas instead of sounding all the same these days! Also emotion was central in the Old school psytrance. Yes let get those Grooves back Thanks mate and God Bless you

I agree with you there.. in this age it's all about production. where it was about how it shaped your trip, it was completely emotional driven.
after all this was Acid music.
Modern tracks seem to be very sound showcase over how it makes you feel.
I grew up in Goa 80 - 90s so I amvery bias to the original sounds

This video not only shed light on the intricacies of music production but also resonated with my own journey in the psytrance world. Having been a passionate follower of psytrance since ’98, a DJ from 2000 to 2008, and someone who has organized parties, the evolution of psytrance you discuss mirrors my own experiences with the genre. Your insight into the shifts in production values over the years aligns with my observations and reasons for my changing relationship with the music.
Despite my extensive background in the psytrance scene, I’m taking my first serious steps into music production. While I’ve dabbled in production since 2000, it was only recently that I decided to dedicate myself fully to learning the craft. This makes me a beginner in the realm of production, navigating my way through the practical aspects of creating music. My theoretical knowledge, built over years of involvement in the scene, is now being challenged and expanded as I delve into the hands-on process of music creation.
Your videos have been instrumental in bridging the gap between my theoretical understanding and the practical skills I need to develop. The balance between sound engineering and creativity, a theme that runs through your content, speaks directly to my current phase of learning. As I take my ‘baby steps’ in production, your guidance on how to nurture both the technical and creative sides of music making is invaluable.
The timing of discovering your content couldn’t have been more perfect. It feels like each video answers specific questions I have at the moment, aligning with discussions I’ve had with friends and reflecting my own thoughts on music production. This serendipity has been a source of motivation and reassurance, encouraging me to pursue my passion for music production with renewed vigor.
Thank you for sharing your expertise and experiences so openly. Your authenticity and the educational value of your content have been a beacon for me as I embark on this journey into music production. I’m grateful for the knowledge you’ve imparted, which has been a crucial part of my transition from a seasoned member of the psytrance community to an aspiring music producer.

I'm a fan of old school Goa & Psy Trance. Modern Psy Trance definitely uses difference kicks. It also treats bass lines differently. There used to be a lot more difference in the rhythms. A lot of my favorite tracks from back then used the same riff or theme in bass and the various leads. They paid less attention to making sure the kick and bass don't compete. The lower frequency kicks with less of a click helped as they competed less with the bassline. In my own tracks, I use Synapse Audio's EKS-Pro VST (Electronic Kick Synthesizer). I can get a deep Goa style kick out of it. The VSTs click leaves something to be desired; sometimes I'll modify it with other impact sounds or one my transient shapers. Another disturbing trend in modern psytrance is what I call kick, bass, & chaos style productions with no discernable pattern or motif in the form of leads. All the mid and high frequencies are filled with bubbly SFX/ear candy one shots. I hesitate to call these trance. The human mind likes patterns and repetition. The only repetition in these is the kick and bass groove; I quickly lose interest in the chaos and it becomes like a walla used in film production. One of these tracks in a mix isn't so bad, but I've heard sets where every track is like that.

The most important thing in the end remains to find your own expression, even in this ever growing market, and there is nothing that really compares to that feeling when the synths are singing the tunes in your head and it just happens to fit perfectly with your kick and bass !

I started listening to Goatrance back in 1995-1997 or so, lots of great productions. Still have most of the vinyl I bought back then. These days I'm only interested in psytrance sounddesign/production videos for my own knowledge, not so much the music anymore. It became so overproduced many many years ago.

This is one of your best video you ever made.
These days music including the psytrance
it’s absolutely Garbage and Musically very low quality
Including oldest Artist That still in the scene, They are making garbage music…
I’m not sure what was happening, but they Lost it
It’s not what it used to be and the bar is very low to get accepted to a record label.
You have to make stupid music No skills needed and this is how it sounds like.
Every Third person that makes that music before he release it. He promoted like this is going to be a killer track. This is like something you never heard before and guess what??? again ,it’s a garbage.
Absolutely wing of time for me to listen to the new stuff they are all crap and low quality.
None of them is knowing what he’s doing. And it’s a big shame.
They are using only 5% from the power of 100%
They Don’t really know what they’re doing
If you want to get example for it, I tell you very simple example:
Good music you Want to listen over and over and over and over and over and over and over… You’ve got the point.
And this new Music that been around for a while
you don’t even want to listen all the way to the end
And honestly I’m not even talking to listen to it again because it’s not going to happen,
so it shows how bad is it…
So yeah, I think this is the most important video you ever made and by the way I do like your music because you bring something different…
It’s all about being different and unique
    Keep up the good work
I wish it was more people like you In the industry.
That’s all I have to say.

Not speaking about psytrance but Goa trance its exactly the same. The neo- goa movement is pushing the kicks with high frequency and machine gun basslines. I think its about producers wanting to appeal to the mobile phone crowd to get more exposure. I much prefer the old style of more rounded kicks and walking sub bass grooves. Even some of the early Goa without a bassline and instead using the leads with extended low frequency's sound really good. Most leads these days are hard cut under 500hz or so so not to interfere with the kick and bass.

These nuances are lost on the dancefloor because party goers will rock to anything decent...back in the day mixing and mastering were very limited and tracks muddy but people rocked none the less.

Goa and 2000s prog psy got more emotion, intention and soul. Psytrance nowadays certain techniques had become a "standard" and the point of psycheledic music is the freedom of soul expresion, I hear that sort of cut off in what they call progressive psytrance and full on in this day. There are some good artists mixing the good of the old and good of the new. But mainstream are gassing the kick and bass like crazy, sounds boring and to me to predictable and no so psycheledic, this is my opinion of course to each there own

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah. sound like Altom - Hologram 2002. Only altom has a different Kick in the tracks - branded. Yes, he ( kick type ) was also popular at the time, but it is the Altom that has a very high-quality production, juicy sound.
ps: as for the sound of the bass, it's a matter of taste. Bass without punch and a bright middle sounds very hypnotic. More psychedelia. A clear bass, moreover, with the 1st note of 3 muffled by the sidechain, break and kill the trance groove. Horse racing begins, bearish gait. This modern groove has completely killed the flowing psychedelic groove
