I'm curious how you managed to get a GC coilover conversion with the shorter shock inserts? On their website today you can only get the shorter inserts when you buy the full kit, which includes front and rear camber plates.

Not exactly, the top of the tube is threaded on the inside to allow the collar nut to tighten down and hold the strut insert in place. If you just cut however much off, you wouldn't be able to install the collar nut. Watch the video again and it will make sense to you.

Great video. Editing was pretty darn good. I personally wouldn't mess with e30 suspension though. It just rides too nice "as is". But, that's just my opinion.
I know nothing about BMWs (I own a Honda lol) but I know they make hybrid oil pans for VWs, so I was wondering if they made them for your specific engine. Might be something to look up. Just thought I'd mention that. Anywho, great video man. :)

You can run whatever you want. Stock shocks will eventually blow and/or the ride will be bouncy since they can't compensate for the higher springs rates.
How did that shock and strut setup work out? I am having a hell of a time figuring out what to get for my conversion kit. I have 550f and 700r spring rates. for front apparently the Koni 1198 sport for the VW corrado works well, but it might not be able to take my high spring rate. As for the rear I'm also not sure what could handle that high of a spring rate besides specially valved shocks from GC, but they don't like selling them individually.

I'm quite a bit lower now than in the last clip, that was right after the install. It has since settled. However, my model E30 has the M42 engine, and the oil pan hangs very low. Going any lower for me would only make sense if I was on air suspension.

Do you have any issues with the sleeves/springs spinning when you turn the wheel? I did the same set up and my sleeves twist when the steering wheel is moved left/right. I didn't use any O Rings before installing the sleeve but it never twisted or had play off of the car when I assembled it.
How come there's a metal disc-like piece on my performance struts where the strut piston/rod enters the chamber?.... it's preventing my sleeves from sliding down to the perch. Do I just cut that piece off?
The OEM strut bearing uses 3x washers. Two on the bottom (BMW parts 31336776760 & 31331110196) and one on the top (07119931021). The locking collar nut tool is available from Bilstein and costs aprox $5. Torque is a substantial 95ft/Lbs and I've seen several come loose because of improper tightening.
depending on how low you want to go. If you are not looking to go much lower than stock, then you should be fine. Probably won't handle very well though. If you want to go low, you will blow the shocks out pretty quickly if you don't shorten the housings and run shorter inserts
On my set-up I ordered 600 front and 800 rear (wich was way to high!) and my bilstein sport (standard lenght) couldn't hold up with those rates... the car was bouncing around. If you want to use your bilstein sport you should order a rate around 400 front and 450 rear and use max half of the height adjusters. My 0.02$ :)
This morning I just ordered a new springs set from GC (525 and 750) with single way adjustable konis. The front cartbridge are shorter to keep the maximum travel. Cost me around 1000$ US shipped, wich cost me 1350$ CAN.

They are IX model Bilstein HD's, which are shorter than other model E30 inserts, thus allowing you to shorten the strut housing.

Yes, they are 4x100 to 5x120 adapters. 18mm in the front and 20mm in the rear. I ordered them from 8380 Laboratories.

Yes. All suspension components are the same on e30's except for 84 versions. (narrower strut tubes)

rear is pretty straight forward, it's a separate spring and shock, so just replace as you wish

Absolutely not ideal. Some thin helper springs should be used to take up that gap so that the spring is never allowed to become detached from the hat.
