Jill and Tawra, you lovely ladies are the best! I truly can't thank you enough for all you do. We had been on food stamps for years. We are no longer using them. It's due to the advice you have given. Following your spending principles has been life changing. I no longer worry about a government shutdown! We belong to a gleaning group. So far for actual food we've only spent$40 this month. Anyone that says you're to harsh needs a reality check. It woke me up. My husband hasn't even noticed that we're no longer using food stamps. I feed four teenage boys plus my husband and myself. I use my dehydrator so much now. I have a fully stocked chest freezer. My boys have said countless times that homemade food is so much better than fast food. They have actually acted disappointed if we get fast food. You all are such blessings. 💛

You can do it. Don't look at the amount of debit all at once. Break it down into individual cards. Spend less than you make. Keep paying on the cards, but pay a bunch on one card until it is paid off. Even if you never get all the debit paid off, you can still live on the income you do have, even in retirement.

So true! Nails and hair! Oh my! What a huge amount of money folks pay for those! Oh natural! Save the bucks! Stopping hair coloring does take some stomach as it grows out unless you chop it short. But saving big bucks. Mine was $45 every three weeks. $780 a year times 15 years $11,700 I've saved! Oh my! Not counting the fancy salon hair products I used to buy. Plus I started doing hubbies hair cuts about 5 years ago so that saved us $90 a year total $450! And we buy VO5 for less than a buck. Never had desire to have nails done. But I understand they are spendy.

We were given gift cards to restaurants for Christmas gifts which we love but we noticed that some restaurants are now charging what some of them call a "convenience fee" of approximately 3% (which varies per restaurant) of your bill if you pay with a credit card. They remove the fee if you pay with cash. The reason is that the credit card companies are charging these restaurants higher fees for the use of the credit cards so the restaurants are passing the cost onto the customer. Another hidden cost some people might not notice.

I don’t know how anyone can’t know these things but it’s obvious they don’t and I believe it’s because they have never had to support themselves fully and do not realize the full scope of what it means to support yourself, which goes far beyond putting food on the table. I’ve never used a budget. Thats for small minds lol. It may come into play for certain scenarios but not for managing ones personal finances. Obviously if you can’t pay off the credit card bill every month you don’t buy it. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to beat the odds against you. Mainly just detach yourself from unrealistic demands and expectations and create a far better, more true and solid world then their illusionally one. Let them marry each other for incomes, it’s all a house of cards that fell hard once already in our lifetime. I kept everything as a traditional homeowner who does not put my real estate at risk. I guess strong minded moral people are a smaller minority then ever. It’s immoral to put your family at risk so you can drive a fancier car and go to Starbucks.

I have never in my whole life missed a day of work from my car breaking down and neither has any of my adult kids or grand kids for that matter. I don't have any more repairs to pay for than people with a new car as a matter of fact I was talking to a tow truck driver one time and he said 90% of the cars he had to tow were brand new ones.

In the last couple of years I have worked in two different stores in two different areas of town. I used to work in a store in a lower middle class area. Now I work in one of the more expensive areas of town. I was shocked to note that the folks who seemed to have less money didn't want to be bothered with their small change. However, where I work now, I frequently hear "even a little bit helps" or "it all mounts up". I can't help but wonder if this attitude toward pennies and nickels and dimes doesn't, at least partly, explain how some folks can afford to live in the pricier area, and some folks are barely making it (carrying their EBT cards) but don't want to be bothered with small change. To succeed, somehow I think one has to get to the point where the pennies, nickels, and dimes are valued and watched over. I think this same attitude that small amounts don't matter is part of what you are talking about with the convenience store snacks and breakfasts. One trip, to them, is a "small amount". It doesn't count. But they forget that they don't make just one trip.

      @karenrankin1396 5 лет назад

Oh my.... my youngest child and I have been in Walmart and seen folks drop change, turn around, look at it, shrug their shoulders, and walk on. Listen I will never be too rich or unwilling to bend over for a penny, nickel, dime and even shockingly I have watched folks drop quarters and keep going. I use a receipt app and will pick up other roles receipts because it helps me save towards gift cards got Amazon, etc. gift cards. I always, always, always shop clearance, then sale, then pick up the rest needed at regular price. I always have extra food for in case I am under the weather or just don't feel like going shopping or even out to eat. I don't want to be tempted. Once I became widowed with three kids (no SSI benefits for me), as they aged out of getting benefits, I made the mistake of letting the bank piggyback a credit account to my checking account for those moments when I found running a business atop managing children and then grandchildren that came, teaching at church, then homeschooling.... point was my mind was often fried and I just forgot to transfer money or maybe the month was slim on sales and I banked on catching up financially once the busier business times of the year came along. Thing is it got out of control. So much so I am slapped cold with the fact that I must pay off my mortgage early before my youngest turns 18 and loses his SSI benefits because my income will not support all the debt I have plus the credit debt. I got myself in the mess. I will get myself out. I spent many years as a single mom with two kids and no child support so I learned to be frugal then even more than my parents on one income and farm raising. I am back to buying things because they are cheaper and making do with them. I still have some of dark chocolate covered almonds Mike gave a heads up on before Christmas for a quarter a bag at Kroger. I ran and checked and bought all but one bag (ha ha... I couldn't take them ALL). I put some in a glass jar (still with the original store sticker) at Goodwill for a fourth of the original price and filled them with those almonds to go along with some coffee. My brother-in-law loved it for Christmas. He thought I had him pegged. I will probably dress some up for Valentine's Day to give other family members who will eat them. I also hoarded the red wrapped Hershey Kisses to wrap for Valentine's and saved the silver and green for Christmas. If you do anything for St. Patrick's you could hoard the green one for then too. They are still good beyond the holiday. Other than that candy I bought Palmer Chocolates for the kids stockings and a big bag of Dum Dums to give my kiddos at church. They think I am genius. I think I am cheap. I find we took more at home since my son loves cooking and I am grateful for that. Food really does tastes better when it's made with love.
Thank you for preaching it Tawra, Jill, and Mike. I know it can be done. I've lived it and the extreme opposite. My late husband spoiled me... not that we were ever rich but he carried me out of poverty state. I am on my way to employing all those life lessons for the betterment and joy of being able to share with others. I have been reminded it is the thought and time invested that counts more than the money. In the end we don't remember the money but the time.
We should totally think about instructing others, showing them in video, how to travel cheap. Even on a tight budget I make room for traveling with my kids. Those are memory making moments we do not miss mainly now due to working and schooling at home. Traveling, learning, experiencing new things and places is good for the soul not to mention the fresh air!! 😊😁❤🙏$$

My husband and I have talked about his going to convenient store spending during the week. He would go in to get his energy drinks. That energy drink ( which is already overpriced) would also turn into him adding extra stuff at the register and half the time ended up being easily $10. He really didn't want to give up his energy drinks so as a compromise we went to Walmart and picked up his energy drinks which were significantly cheaper getting them in a pack than paying $2.50 a piece at the gas station. Then throughout the week he brings his breakfast, and leftovers and sandwiches for lunch. That helped things significantly. I think he compromised because he was tired of my nagging him about it. We are a family of 4 (about to be 5) and I normally spend between 40 and 60 bucks a week on groceries. There was no reason for him to be spending more than my grocery spending on just convenience food and eating out...for himself. I came from a family where we did watch our money closely and I was money conscious from an early age. He never handled money til after he left home. So it's definitely been a work in progress.

If he isn't to picky check your dollar tree they have half cans of rockstar, sometimes small monsters and full size rip-its (my husband drinks rip-its, while he was in the military thats what they got during deployments.)

@@brooklynknight1032 My hubby is military too. He only drinks Full Throttles. I tried to get him on Rockstar or even Monsters as an alternative. At walmart they have packs of 8 for about $8/9. That makes them a lot better than the $2.50 I see at the gas station. I've tried to get him to bring coffee in from home instead. His gas station habits started when he was in recruiting and would be on the road a lot. It's not like we never went on a gas station run before then but it was a lot more spread out and so it didn't hit as hard. I still have to reel him in sometimes because if I'm not on top of things, he slips back into doing it. That's when I go through a bank statement and itemize every single thing. That tends to help out for a while.

I'm prior service myself and remember having Ripits. They weren't the best flavors but they were free and hit the spot. I am more into healthy eating now and don't really drink energy drinks anymore.

I recently worked at a convenient store and the same people came in everyday spending 15 dollars on drinks and snacks and then their tabacco for the day..This place was busy all day...But what shocked me the most was the amount of money spent on lottery tickets.. I used to think wow I could buy a weeks worth of groceries with that..

I am retired but I help out the local concession operator when she has catering events. I wash dishes, peel veggies and stir pots in exchange for a free meal and free coffee every time I come to the concession. Saves me $2 a day and only costs them 20 cents. And I get to spend the day with a friend cooking in a kitchen. It's a win win.

Not so much hidden money but extra money every month we also budget over the amount for our electric & gas were debt free cash only budget limit & we seem to have extra with our extra $ were saving it so we can be a month or 2 months ahead on the budget.
Guess its time to put it into a book & put your ideals together how to budget will be looking for the book...!!!
I see something I like I give myself at least 14 days to wait by the time 14 days I don't need it or want it. Many also uses the envelopes each month...Get out of debt get away from the credit cards once your out of debt stay out...!!!
Change your life style on your spending get into good spending & savings habits
We use to go out to eat for every meal
No more we cook at home we don't go out to eat plus our health got better....

I find credit cards easily get me into trouble. The issue is that without an emergency fund (even 1k would do) the cc becomes the emergency fund but it then takes forever to get rid of it. I just managed to clear my debt on it and got a prepay cc to use for everyday that I use for my own weekly allowance. I'm getting there. It's hard at the beginning to get the ball rolling but you can do it if you really want to.

In the defense of people in winter having tank tops or t shirts on if you live in the south the winter isn't always so bad lol. My husband and i both love the cold, barely run our heat but are wearing t shirts or tanks but are comfy.

Great video. You gals always keep it real and have a great way of putting things in perspective. The car payment thing. 😬 The husband just purchased a car because a deer totaled his other one. 😭😭😭😭 We have a payment.

Thanks Tawra & Jill for once again showing all the hidden costs....Don't keep your blinkers on folks when you are paying your bills...read them. Some of the credit cards even say, if you pay only minimum payment you will pay this much to pay it off. And that is if you do not add another dime to the card. Have a Blessed day ladies, you are the best.
