  • Speaking in tongues is one of the most divisive issues within the body of Christ today. Christians are divided over the issue. Can everyone speak in tongues? Do Christians who speak or pray in tongues have more power than those that don't? Can you pray for the gift of tongues? Can you pray in tongues without an interpreter? Is tongues promised to every believer? These and many other similar questions will be explored and answered in this 4-part mini-series on 1 Corinthians 14.

What's up BEAT fam? So, as you all know, we are in a series going through 1 Corinthians called Church Gone Wild. So, this is video #1 of 4 in this mini-series on tongues and prophecy. Let me know your thoughts. Enjoy!

Chapter 12: God assigns the roles. The Holy Spirit matches the gifts to the roles.
Chapter 12: The gifts are for building up each other.
Chapter 13: The gifts are tools of love (for others, not self).
There’s more to the context of 14:4 than verse 5.
Verse 5: Tongues, properly used, serves the same purpose (defined in the previous two chapters) as prophesy, edifying the church.

Brother Allen I’m looking for a response from you concerning the Pentecostal faith, which I have left, but concerning their belief that you don’t even have the Holy Spirit unless you’re speaking in tongues I strongly disagree and would like to know your take on that according to scripture. They claim it’s the only evidence you have God‘s Holy Spirit in you, negating any other fruit of the spirit’ of the which tongues is not even a fruit of the spirit ,that’s what bothers me.

The "tongues" that were spoken by the disciple's, on what is called Pentecost, were known languages of the day, to the people from various countries that came to Jerusalem to the Passover feast. The people were amazed that they were being spoken to in their own language. Acts Chapter 2, verse 3 through 13. In 1 Corinthians Chapter 12, verses 29 through 31, and especially verse 30 "All do not have the gifts of healing, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? (NASB). The verses here in Corinthians say not everyone is gifted with everything, it says "all do not"...and ends with, "do they?" So we can conclude that "speaking in tongues" is not what every believer is gifted to do. Then comes the question, is speaking in tongues speaking in a known language, or can it be gibberish, known only to the person speaking and to the Lord? The Bible says if one is not there to interpret, then it is best to keep quiet. The disciples, at Pentecost, spoke in known languages, not gibberish. So...fasten your seatbelt, here comes the discussion, I am sure.

My brother was in Germany 45 yrs ago ,went to a service on the base with a friend ,was in the Army ,my brother was from The USA.,a woman got up and Started singing ,he said the most beautiful, deeply touching. Song praising and worshipping Jesus, my brother wasn't walking with Jesus yet, he was so drawn to the words and worship to The lord, he looked at his friend next to him and said that was the most beautiful music, worship to God he had ever heard before, his friend looked at him puzzled and said yes if only she weren't singing in a language you could understand ,my brother said ,I understood every word clearly, then he was told she was singing in tongues . God used it to get my intellectual brother to know it was super natural , never forgot it ,couldn't explain it , but knew it was from God. Eventually gave his life to the lord.

I have “spoken in tongues” for almost fifty years. It is a very personal gift that I do not share with many others especially since I am Catholic. It comes as easily as breathing in and out. There is no hysteria involved. I can pray that way while driving, shopping, etc. When I had a difficult delivery, I prayed that child into the world. This was a very balanced and informative intro to the topic of tongues. As a person who is both intellectual and spiritual, I believe in a balance of the two. Problems arise when we lean too much one way or another and it can cause serious divisions in the church. We get puffed up thinking we have the answers and the others are blind or ignorant. Come, let's reason together! Because unity is what God cares about first and foremost. I, myself, have charismatic leanings on this topic, but that wasn't always so. But I have seen the benefit of exercising a personal prayer language, and now God has called me to a Baptist church that does not often raise this topic and I feel the Holy Spirit has asked me to remain silent on this topic in corporate worship for now. We have to be sensitive to the spirit because doing things for our own ego's sake will not be blessed by God or used for his glory. And isn't that the ultimate goal? We must be discerning and obedient. "My brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love." (Galatians 5:13)

@@MichaelTheophilus906 Neither God the Father, nor the Son, ever commanded or even suggested that any believer "pray in tongues." No biblical prophet, patriarch, or apostle is recorded as doing so either. The Corinthians started doing it, and Paul rebuked them in his letter. • @tessapriddy6592
      @tessapriddy6592 6 месяцев назад +1

The apostle Paul claimed to pray in tongues more than anyone of his time, so you’re wrong. 1 Corinthians 4:18. The issue is that people want to glory in it or do not understand when to keep it quiet. Also some say if you don’t do it, then you don’t know God at all. Stuff like that either demonstrates a lack of knowledge (failure to study or new to faith), false teachings, pride, or some such issue that’s causing confusion. It’s more a private gift than a public one, but if interpreted (either by native speakers, like in Acts, or by the same Spirit that gives the utterance of the words). Either way, when in doubt keep it quiet so and personal. It’s not something you “learn” and it’s not something you present, it’s something God does. If you learned “how to,” as in took lessons from a person, then it’s not from God. There’s a place for the gift of tongues. It doesn’t say choose tongues OR prophecy. It says to desire prophecy more than tongues, because prophecy builds up the entire church. It makes sense to build up yourself at home and prophecy in church. Some people act like the gift of tongues is the “it” gift, meaning you know God. Scripture doesn’t consider it as such, it’s a lesser gift. NOT an unimportant one or one to discard. In fact if it is from God you can’t discard it, because you’re not the one producing it. Yes, you have control over how loud you speak it or whether you open your mouth or not, in that respect you may allow Him to do so or constrain Him from doing so by being unwilling. Why would anyone put away a spiritual gift God gave them and then expect a greater gift to be given? The Scripture doesn’t say don’t desire to speak in tongue, it says find it in yourself to desire to prophecy to the glory of God so that the entire church can benefit from congregating together and prevent confusion when unbelievers show up.

A pastor actually looked at you and told you that?? That is sad. If you believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and you know in your heart that you trust Him, then you have the Holy Spirit and are saved. How do I know this? Because without the Holy Spirit, you wouldn’t even believe. It takes the Holy Spirit in you to bring your carnal flesh mind to any sense of faith in the first place. Some may argue and say “Oh but the devil also believes in Jesus.” However, the devil does not believe Jesus is Lord Almighty because if he did then he would submit himself to the Lord. Instead, he chose to rebel and go against the will and plan of God.

@christas2863 Hi there Christa ^^. I do agree that there are those who have been given the gift of tongues as the Spirit moves, but at the same time, there are many more who are speaking in tongues who do not have the gift, in order to fit in. There are many charismatic churches who tell you that everyone can speak in tongues and if you don't then you are not baptized or filled with the Holy Spirit. If you didn't speak in tongues then you lack faith and are not as holy as those who do. So I spoke in tongues, copying the others and developing a fluent "fake" tongue, fooling everyone, including myself, but NOT God. It wasn't until God convicted me that what I was doing was actually contrary to His word, that I realized that He had NOT given me the gift of tongues, and that this progressive church's teaching was wrong. I realize now that I don't need the gift of tongues to be a born-again spirit-filled servant of God. The Spirit has given me other spiritual gifts that allow me to do the work God has called me to, and I am sure that if I ever need to speak in a different tongue to spread the word of God to someone who doesn't speak English, that the Holy Spirit will impart that to me, if even for the one time that I need it. I have heard that happening to those in the mission field. :)

    • @Cmedic57

@Robert Right you are. That has actually happened, and have run across real authentic tongues, but most are fake tongues, people who have been convinced by the false teaching that unless you speak in tongues you are not baptized or filled with the Holy Spirit, forcing people to fake a gift they have not been given in order to be accepted. That just makes that church a works based church. doesn't it?
So Robert, you don't believe? If you saw and experienced the miracles I have seen in my life, and had your life miraculously saved on many occasions all as answers to prayer, then you would believe. Trust me, you cannot expect anything from a God you don't believe in. I know that from first hand experience. Pray you chose to believe for your sake, you will never regret it!!!

I have heard Justin peters say that having a prayer language isn't real. But I had prayed for an awakening of the Holy Spirit within me and had also read the book "9 o'clock in the morning" about an episcopal priest out on the west coast who had experienced that and experienced having a prayer language. I believe mine is real and I feel supernatural things happening when I am praying in my prayer language… It's not for me to understand it... it is the Holy Spirit doing the praying and I am accommodating in faith. I feel things lifted off of me when I'm doing that. I also feel like the Spirit within me is trying to reach out to heaven during those times. I don't do it in front of other people because praying in an unknown language doesn't edify the church and it doesn't edify anyone. It's personal… It's private between me and God. but it's real and I have found myself delivered at times while praying in this way.

I have been having a crisis of faith because many Bible teachers, well known, well educated, say that the way I hear God is wrong and untrue. This segment you have given me a light to my path and I thank you for that. I have been praying, seeking, crying, speaking to other believers, the whole 9 yds. It's a crisis to me because I am an old woman, single, never married nor have I any children. We seem to be the least addressed in the Bible. I always believed I was connecting to God by conversing with Him. He has given me micro-visions lasting only a second or two but the teachers and the bible say nothing about old women having visions, nor conversing with God (yes, two way communication). He has never told me to do anything that would contradict His Word and our conversations are like two friends speaking. Does He ever tell me I am wrong about things? Yes. He explains how He feels about my anger toward someone else or my denigration of another. I believe He has used you to help me through this pain of confusion by saying that how we speak to Him in the privacy of our own homes can be edifying and that lets me know that this is my private language with Him.
    Thank you.

We don't know if Jesus spoke in tongues when he prayed the Bible never states whether he did or didn't. I am going to assume it was possible.
However Pentecost did not happen until AFTER Jesus ascended into Heaven. This represented the Comforter that Jesus spoke about in John 15 and several other scriptures.
As fotlr the Lord's Prayer Jesus was teaching us HOW to pray. How we approach Father God, this was an example not something we have to recite verbatim. We CAN do that.
Our Father who art in Heaven ....... go before God recognizing WHO he is, giving him glory and honor, believing he is the ONLY Living God. Worship him with your whole being.
Give us this day our daily bread: Make your needs be known,
Forgive our trespasses as we forgive others...... ask for forgiveness of sins, confess weaknesses and sins, forgive others and pray for them also
Lead us not into temptation..... asking God for guidance and direction, and protection, for EVERYONE not just yourself.
For Thine is the kingdom...... Father God I KNOW that you have the power to do this, this is Your world....

I've encountered this idea as well, though thankfully not at any church I've been a member at. Sadly it's so incredibly easy to defuse that bomb. One simply needs to read the rest of the book of Acts and pay attention. There are several passages describing people being 'Baptised in the Spirit' and the manifestations hence are Not the Same. Some receive Tongues, some do Not.
Throughout the whole of scripture God shows himself in Unique ways, rarely doing the same thing Twice or in the same ways. Yet we seem to constantly want to assume a Conformity to his ways. I suspect it's steeped human insecurities that we want God to manifest in us and others in the same way so that we Know it's Him. Fearful of deception we have more faith in the deceiver than we do in The Truth so we seek to strip away his character of Creativity!

It's game changing not just in praying in the Spirit but understanding spiritual things by the Holy Spirit, not just by what your logic and brain can comprehend because everyone is limited in their understanding. We can't lean on our own understanding and logic because our mind can't comprehend spiritual realities...they are beyond our mind, unless we have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, which positions us to be like the early church who waited for the Spirit to be poured out in the upper room and on pentecost they baptized and filled with the Spirit! To be filled means to be overwhelmed. Ephesians 5 says don't be drunk with wine but be filled with the Spirit. Paul is saying, don't fill your mouth with alcohol, fill yourself with the Holy Ghost! If you haven't been baptized and received the heavenly language, which by the way, you can speak in other languages as you speak in tongues and not know it, it happens all the time!!!

Afterwards, I felt a peace and joy fall over me. Many church leaders (kenneth copeland....who even makes a mockery of it and says "its easy to speak in tongues, starts speaking gibberish and then laughs like a lunatic) and others try to force this gift and forge or counterfeit, speaking in tongues to make themselves "look blessed". I used to think, is he speaking of the Lord? No, if he was speaking of the Lord the word perfect would be capitalized. So what is this word perfect speaking of... the completed word of God, the Holy Bible, completed scriptures? Makes sense, right? So now there is no need for those original gifts. This is an excelente explanation. Thank you ! I have christian family members/ friends that did not speak in tongues but they are active in other gifts , and fill with the Holy Spirit! By His Grace I speak in tongues according to the need, angelical in private time with the LORD, natural dialect in emergencies like teaching kids. I remember once when the Holy Spirit gave me the ability to speak in French / Creole in class; I did not understand creole but one student did, he obey the command necessary to keep the class safe. In occasions, when I pray for specific requests ,the LORD gives me tongues and interpretation to encourage that person or for giving directions , all of them because of HIS Grace.

While he was still teaching he had referred a student for disciplinary actions which the student finally got expelled from school. Everything went well after that for sometime untill one day later on while the teacher was on his grocery runs he came across this particular student with a group of thugs whom began to follow him closely. At first the teacher didn't know how much danger he was in untill they were a couple of feet away that he realised and began meditating in tongues for a few good minutes. When he finished meditating and turned around, to his surprise they are no longer there, they had gone and the place was empty.

Thank you Brother Allen Parr for taking the time to talk about this concept of “speaking in tongues”. You have pointed out that it is not wise to use this spiritual gift in corporate prayer meetings. Paul was also trying to draw a line between what should be done in the church and what should not be done. But it is clear that you have already made up your mind about whether or not we should speak in tongues. You've definitely done your research, but some topics require experiential knowledge, not theories. If you read the same chapter from verse 14 to 18, you will understand that it is better to pray in tongues than in our mother tongue (I don't mean that the prayer of those who pray in their own language is a lesser prayer). No wonder Paul wanted us all to speak in tongues. The 14th chapter of 1 Corinthians does not speak of the superiority of prophecy over speaking in tongues, but rather of the gift that is most beneficial in church meetings. I would suggest that all who are committed to having a strong relationship with the Father seek the gift of speaking in tongues. Ask God to give it to you and He surely will (Luke 11:13). From experience, every Christian should leverage the gift of speaking in an unknown tongue. So beneficial for a personal walk with God. Once again thank you Brother Allen.

*This is the best video on this topic I’ve seen.*
I skipped it when it first came out, as I thought I knew what Allen was going to say. Something along the lines of a 50’s rock song shama lama ding dong, then interpret for himself, God says you are unsaved if you don’t speak like this.
    1. This video is the best explanation of speaking in tongues. God scattered people and confused their languages at the Tower of Babel. Now, after Christ has given His life, been resurrected, and ascended back into heaven; the last commandment has to be started, preach the Gospel to all nations.
    2. What Allen hasn’t gotten to yet, Paul very clearly states; when someone speaks in an unknown tongue (not the native language of the current culture) another is to interpret; *NOT THE SPEAKER* In the Old Testament, and it should still be this way today as it would start removing a lot of junk from churches, a prophet that claimed to speak for God and it didn’t come to pass or be verified - they were to stone them to death.
Also, unlike today, guilt was established by the word of two or three witnesses, not one. This goes with speaking in tongues where Paul said another is to interpret. Of all the comments I’ve read, only one stated they were in service and felt the Holy Spirit give them the interpretation for what someone else had said.
    3. Along with what is stated above, just blabbering gibberish, for the sake of claiming a gift God has not bestowed upon you is sin. If someone starts speaking Hungarian for example, I’m not going to understand. However, I believe if such a thing were to happen, someone else there may not understand the local common dialect; but be of Hungarian descent; and God is giving them what they were not getting - His Word for redemption unto salvation.

Glad you made this video. Can't tell you how insecure certain Christian youtubers made me feel early on after getting saved when they were out preaching a message that "if you don't speak in tongues, you're not saved." Even at the time, I knew that sentiment was nonsense because my baptism in the Spirit was by no means subtle at all (I KNEW I was saved when I got saved). At any rate, I did end up praying on it to God and simply ask Him "If the gift of tongues is really something that you want for my life, Lord please bless me with it." About 2 weeks later, God gave me a dream revealing to me that He'd actually been trying to speak through me for a while and He showed me how to surrender my tongue to Him. Nothing more really happened with it until a few months later, the night I found out my Mom had passed away, when I called for the Lord to "be with me", it was the first time that I started speaking in tongues (I just assumed it was a prayer). Since then, I've learned that I can pray in tongues for just about anything. I simply think in my mind in english what I want to pray for (for example: "Lord, I pray you'd take away my anger.") and Holy Spirit then puts the words in my mouth and I speak them.
PS: Something very important about the gift of tongues that I feel like no one really knows (or at least never speaks on) cause it was revealed to me by Holy Spirit: If you desire the gift of tongues, you must first repent and refrain from using your tongue to curse, slander, and generally speak evil. Holy Spirit pointed to James 3:9-12. James allegorizes the tongue and human speech as a spring producing either salt water (profanity) or spring water (wisdom/righteous speech). He closes by saying a salt water spring can't produce "fresh" water. The hidden meaning behind this is that God (through Holy Spirit) will not use a person's tongue that's still given over to speaking evil (AKA a salt water spring). If you want the gift of tongues, first clean up your speech and allow your salt water spring to become a fresh water spring.

I believe speaking in tongues is truly the ability to speak a language such as Spanish, French, German, Cantonese etc. This being said, I think it is so others can speak the gospel in another language and to have an interpreter that is able to confirm or negate. Most of the time people are just babbling in church seeking self glorification, just as well as the practicing of slaying in the spirit does not profess a spirit of self control. I think that is why Paul says, " I wish you all spoke in tongues, to further the gospel throughout the world. Thanks for your teaching and have a blessed day!

I have been a believer for around two years. Last year I encountered someone who asked if I had “second baptism” this lead me to go down a rabbit hole for this topic in the scripture.
Many will reference acts 19 as proof of the second baptism when Paul asks Johns disciples “have ye received the Holy Ghost since you believed.” They say no and then Paul lays hands on them and then they speak in tongues. This only happened because those particular believers did not have the full gospel of Jesus at the time.
The second thing. In John 16 Jesus specifically says that the spirit “shall glorify me”
Those two things along with all of the scripture in 1 Cor leads me to believe that people placing emphasis on speaking in tongues in church is a huge issue and can cause harm and division in the body of Christ.
People even go so far as to say that tongue speaking is a prerequisite of salvation or receiving the Holy Ghost. Is the work of Christ insufficient then? This is insanity.
Jesus said that the Holy Ghost will glorify him. Any statement that says that you need tongues to receive the Holy Ghost or salvation cannot be a statement made in truth.
Christ and his work is sufficient. We do not need to add to it.

There’s a difference in speaking in tongues and praying in tongues. Praying in tongues is so helpful in intercessory prayer when we don’t know what to pray for but sensing the urge to pray. It keeps us on track with a prayer than aligns with God’s will. Biblically speaking, tongues would follow being baptized with the Holy Spirit and was the evidence of it.

I have a personal testimony. This did NOT happen to someone else - it happened to ME. I testify that this is 100% true and I apologize that explaining it fully means a few extra words. I was a new but committed disciple of Jesus when I first began speaking in "gibberish?" other tongues. I knew not what I was saying but I clearly felt prompted to do so. A few months after that began to be part of my prayer and worship life, I happened to be visiting a large church (almost 1000 people) when there was a worship time that went silent - and someone spoke out in another "gibberish?" tongue. I "FELT" like I knew exactly what they said. After they had finished the audience awaited an interpretation and my heart was in my throat with fear because I knew what it was - but I had doubt. Was this really The Holy Spirit or was it my mind? After about 30 seconds (an eternity when The Holy Spirit is prompting you and you are fighting) the pastor gave the interpretation. IT WAS ALMOST TO THE EXACT WORDS - VERBATIM to what I had understood. I apologized to God for not trusting him, and thanked him for the lesson that I learned. God's ways are NOT meant for the carnal mind to understand. They are meant for the humble servant to grow in faith in Him.

Sounds to me like the conditions were met. And I don't use a prayer language other than English. I will say there is a marked difference in what he described and the clear manifestation of Kundalini spirits and disorderly hysterical laughter that should rightly be shunned.

One day she was by herself praying to the Lord around 12-1 am with an open heart that if the speaking in tongues are still available for today’s believers then she would love to have that gift.
Amazingly she received the speaking in other tongue which is an actual language Portuguese and after she’s done praying in tongues she interprets the tongues. How amazing is that!!!

Same here! My college Inter Varsity group was so divided on this issue that it became an "us" against "them" and friendships were damaged in the process. It was a heartbreaking mess. My father is a pastor and when I asked him about this issue, he sent me John MacArthur's commentary on 1 Corinthians. I found a lot of peace in studying that but just did not want to fight with my brothers and sisters over this "secondary issue"

Not to mention a gazillion different interpretations and translations. Outside of my church nobody I know ever give the key (which is to pray first and invite the Holy Spirit to bear witness of the truth) to understanding God’s words as inspired and recorded by his chosen servants, the prophets and apostles. I testify when I put it to the test of praying first for understanding and wisdom, things that i read before and didn’t grasp changed. My new and correct understanding was like a flood gate opened up for me and now I spend more time reading, studying and pondering. I just finished studying the Old Testament for all of 2022. I grew up in a tongue speaking church and for many years i couldn't speak in tongues ( prayer language). Every Friday night was a prayer night. In our prayer nights, it was more about intercession ( interceding for others most especially our communities and country for the sake of the gospel). We used to pray for hours! Starting from 10 pm to 5 am in the morning.
But for a person like me who couldn't pray in prayer language ( tongues), it was tough! I could pray for some minutes and then went out of words, but those who could pray in prayer language ( tongues) could pray for hours without ceasing!!! I really felt left out! I could see everyone in corners very focused on prayers for hours without getting tired or getting asleep.
One day i cried out to God and asked him to give the gift of praying in tongues, so that i can also be able to intercede for that long.
It was one day, when i really started to pray in tongues after really focus on the needs of others rather than my own problems and before i knew it, i was speaking in tongues!
I was always starting in my own language then switch to tongues in intercession.
What really amazed me is, i could understand what i was praying for in spirit and then switch to my normal language to pray about that issue intensively.
One day i was arrested by officers at the airport on my way to minister in a church,i was trying to ask them what i did wrong but they couldn't listen and i was about to miss my flight. Suddenly i heard a voice in my heart telling to pray in tongues ( in silence) after praying like about 5 minutes, the officers just let me go and even apologized, till now i never understood what was happening in the spiritual world.
PRAYING IN TONGUES CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!!

And when I tried to it felt forced but I was trying to step out on faith. I used to watch videos and pray to God wondering why I don’t have this ability or gift. Sometimes I even thought the Holy Spirit wasn’t in me or something. Goes to show I have more studying to do in my bible because I searched everywhere but the word of God. I feel relieved. I prayed for months for the gift of tongues (praying in a language only understood by God for the purpose of prayer// allowing the Spirit to intercede and speak through me). I thought that God would not give it to me or it wasn’t meant for me and that I’d never receive it. I realized that it was I who was lacking faith. Whoever has the Holy Spirit has access to ALL the gifts of the Spirit because it is not them who manifests the gifts, it is the Lord. Now with all the gifts we don’t have them all at the same time. I’ve heard it compared to a toolbox, you use one or two tools at a time *as the Father needs*, you don’t take all the tools out at once, or you wouldn’t use a hammer to tighten a bolt. We don’t all prophesy and heal and cast out demons and speak in known tongues and interpret all at once. The Spirit gives manifestation of the gifts as appropriate and also according to faith. For your prayer language, pray earnestly and open your mouth to speak in faith and the Holy Ghost will take it from there. Now I spend the majority of my prayer time praying in tongues, that my spirit prays. Blessings to you, brother in Jesus Christ ❤

My daughter was a semi undercover missionary to Iceland for 8 years. She lived in a remote village near the Arctic Circle. She was the only Christian there. It was a very spiritually dark place and she daily encountered evil and was constantly in spiritual warfare for these people. One night she was agonizing in prayer over them. Praying and being so distraught in her heart for their souls. She was literally crying out loud to Christ to save them and it became so intense she could not form words anymore. As she was wailing over them, her wails became a language she didn’t know. It flowed out of her like a river. It ministered to her greatly. She knew this language was given to her from God . She knew God was inhabiting her petitions as she spoke. So much broke that night in Heaven and on earth for that village. The next day she looked up words she remembered speaking. It. Was. Hebrew. HEBREW ! It still fills me with awe and praise to speak of this!!

Great video, Allen. I’ve been studying this lately and many believe that tongues aren’t for today because we don’t need them anymore. Their reasoning for this is that tongues was for spreading g the gospel and we don’t need that anymore because of the growth of technology and translators and this that and the third. But I was never fully convinced about that because Paul mentions praying in tongues and edifying yourself. That’s not evangelism. So it was brought to my attention recently that tongues were actually never used to preach the gospel. I’ve looked back through it and I can’t find an instance of tongues being used to share the gospel. People cite Pentecost but the problem with that is that the 120 were in the upper room minding their own business worshipping God when the tongues fell on them. They’re weren’t out on the streets preaching the gospel. And by the time Peter started preaching, the text seems to indicate that he was speaking in the common language that everybody understood. So again, no tongues for preaching the gospel. Then some cite the verse about these things ceasing (1 Cor 13:8), but, if you continue reading (always a good habit), it would seem that Paul is referring to a ceasing at Christ’s return, which he has not done yet. So I think tongues are still for today because it was never for evangelism. I’ve never personally prayed in tongues and I’m okay with that. I don’t need that. Might be cool. But I don’t need it. A friend of mine who does pray in tongues explained it this way: you’re praying the perfect will of God. So if that’s true, it would seem that praying in tongues is actually better than not praying in tongues because how many of y’all will confess like me that our prayers are usually pretty self-centered. So if you have the gift to pray in tongues you don’t even know what you’re praying so you may not even be praying for yourself, but you’re praying exactly what God wants you to pray. That’s my current understanding of tongues.

It did manifest in various earthly languages at its very first appearance so that all those who didn't know God, could hear the praises to God being spoken in their own languages. But it can also be in a mysterious language of angels, a mysterious language of the holy spirit. and needs someone with a gift of interpretation in the holy spirit to interpret it.
