I'm SO happy you featured Egor! He practiced with my father's freediving school for a bit - he's a really great guy and a very competent diver. The divers he was diving with under the ice are also excellent divers and even better people. They only dive with those people that they trust to be safe. It's surreal watching friends be featured on your channel!
And please don't listen to the negativity in your comments - your forté might be scuba diving, but by posting about freediving and reacting to those videos, you are also learning and widening your own scope of understanding. So keep on doing that!

Depending on the length of the dive, when you surface from longer dives it’s necessary to do hook breaths to prevent blacking out, in that case you wouldn’t place the snorkel back in mouth. If it’s a causal dive and you know you’re not pushing the limits placing the snorkel back in the mouth instantly is normally okay!

Hello im a masterfreediver I've been freediving in most of Florida's deeper springs and sinks my deepest freedive is 46 meters done at warm mineral spring. The only thing's egor has done wrong that I can see is you never dive alone yes scuba divers was there but for free divers you actually need a dive safety close to you when doing recovery breaths just in case shallow water black out happens or a black out at depth scuba divers usually can't go straight up to surface and yes after recovered you can use snorkel.i love your channel here on youtube, its always great to know much as possible about the people you dive around. im always asking questions when I meet scuba divers at dive sites for this reason. im all about safety and looking forward to more of your videos.

    • @androopr

You are right about needing a freediving safety- Egor is a long time dive buddy of mine. We always play the camera angles and selectively edit out the safety divers floating around. (for example I was there for all of the ice clips with a few others friends, but only see me in a few clips). Egor can clarify for the clips I wasn't there on with the scuba divers but it's almost certainly the same case 😁

Just a fyi and I know it sounds crazy but if you happen to fall in water or just get wet and there is snow around you just roll around in the snow and it will absorb the moisture and help you dry out faster, by having dry skin will help prevent rapid heat loss. You will still be cold but it is better than being wet.

You take the snorkel out when diving so that if you black out it doesnt keep your mouth open and allow you to suck in more water. You put the snorkel back in prior to surfacing incase the water on the surface is choppy so you don't suck in water on your first breath.

As a freediver I take out my snorkel just because it's more comfortable to hold my breath without the snorkel mouthpiece keeping my mouth open. Once you get to the surface it also nice to be able to breath in without having to purge the water from you snorkel first. One school of thought is that if you black out in the water with your snorkel in your mouth there is a higher risk of getting water in you airways.

Yeah, I rewound and he puts the snorkel in his mouth after he's taken a breath at the surface, which makes sense.
Ice free diving: S**t!! Yes I'd want a line. And I'd want to have that axe clipped to me. Although actually I'd be the guy on the surface wearing the massive bearskin coat, no the one in the ice-bath in his underwear.
Hypothermia: yes it can be a rapid onset and if you're working hard you may not notice the initial symptoms, and then not notice the later ones - narrowing of situational awareness, a feeling of warmth when the shivering stops, the happy phase where you don't care about anything, gradual unconsciousness and death. But even in near freezing water if you're working hard I don't think it would get too far advanced in the what I understand to be the couple of minutes max duration of the average free dive. You would want some significant warmth when you came back out though!
Awesome imagery. But I'll stick to the dry suit!

Even with 2;30 min breathholding ability at 40 ft wich i am really at ease im trying to imagine how i would do around them. I do not picture myself following him! Im pretty sure these guys are 4+min freedivers. Impressive. Hats off to these freaks. I would love to try too but you know in freedive its pretty much all about how long you can hold your breath at effort while maintaining self control and even if i wanted to do this i could not, its not that we are not good it's more likelly that our lungs will never be conditionned enough to hold our breath at effort for that long. THIS IS VERY IMPRESSIVE. Static breath holding is not freediving breath holdiing. They are Freaks....
Even with 2;30 min breath holding ability at effort I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO THIS I AM SAD! But im realistic... ^^
by the way i got this far from freediving spearfishing. And thats years of conditionning for 2;30 min... Impressive
For the hypothermia its pretty much the same theory... conditionning... Being Canadian Even in summer when i spear fish the water is pretty cold... its all about conditionning. Love you Woody love you Guss. Cheers from Canada

Opinion is split on putting snorkel back in mouth. Some people put it in just before they surface so that id they blackout face down then their breathing air and not the sea. Others like this guy take one breath and put it in, because you can still blackout after taking a breath. Most surface without snorkel and then dont put it in until they've had a few good breaths because thats the quickest way to get 02 into your blood, thus lowering chances of blacking out. Ive noticed that spearfishermen in the med normally put it back in their mouth the last few feet but this is considered bad practice elsewhere. Not clear to me whats the best option, maybe depends if you have a buddy and how your weighted.

that ice diving trick has to be risky as hell.
having to actively reopen your exit hole is gonna have you exert a lot more energy, sure the other hole was apparently close, but that was like, strenuous activity in ice cold water, that's nothing like just calmly freediving in the tropics xP
that dude has balls of steel 0.o

Congrats on 300k subscribers guys!! 🎉🎉 I’ve been working my way through your videos and this is today’s! Loving all your videos and you two together. Keep it up! You never speak too much and you never stop the videos too often by the way 😊 I love learning all things diving through you two. Non-diver right now but we’ll see! Love from the UK 🇬🇧

Hey dive talk! Im a experienced free diver here I just wanted to say the reason free divers don’t dive with the snorkel in there mouth is because if a shallow water black out happens the water in the snorkel will immediately go in to your mouth and you will probably drown. If you dive with out it then you should have time to be brought to the surface.

Hi . Just wanna say he lives in Russia so to me his tolerance to cold would be more than someone from more tropical zones... here northern Canada we do get 75 degree water temperature but only for about 6 to 8 feet down depending on the lake.. my first warm water dive was like 80 degrees at depth . I had a 3mm shorty and had to un zip it . I was getting too hot.. so maybe that's why he doesn't look that cold ...

Last winter a freediver in my country died the very same way. Under ice, without a guideline. (Well no. He was also alone.)
There is no room for error (or bad luck) when you do something crazy like this.

Woody said He's an accountant. The analytical endless explanations TOTALLY makes sense now😂
Quick, concise explanations Woody. Focus lol. Less coffee.
Im not a diver... But the intelligent people who find all this content fascinating dont just stop at yalls videos. We'll search for reasons, answers, how and why. Cave divers/explorers are swimming in no mans land and to me are legit THE MOST apex individuals of exploration. Regardless whether its a mapped cave or not.

I dunno. I like the explanations and the exposition. It's enlightening and it keeps us from having to go and look at potentially junk info. Hearing it from the mouth of a trained and legit diver (two of them) is the best deal imo.

I suspect it took the second hole a while to freeze. I've done a decent amount of hard water fishing. When we go to check the holes when it's very cold there will be a thin layer of ice that you can easily break with your hand. I'd be surprised to hear they didn't wait for a layer of ice to from on the second hole in the traverse part of the video.

I've swum in a wetsuit in Halifax Harbour NS in DECEMBER. Not as a diver, just with divers. My husband explained that the water in the suit would stay at body temperature, after a few uncomfortable moments and I wouldn't be cold. Yes Canadians are also crazy.

Lmao i love you guys. Dont use the snorkel bc if you black out with it in your mouth underwater you will drown. Your jaw locks up when you black out. No snorkel no way for water to get into your mouth down your throat. If you have the snorkel and blackout you have a stright pipe right down your throat and will drown. Always freedrive with buddies never go alone. Even the best will black out at some point

Well done guys. A month on and he now has 899 subscribers. As for the risk of breaking through the hole with an axe, the guy filming on top of the ice probably had an axe himself to break through if things went wrong. They could have set a safe time like 1 minute where he would break it if Egor hadn't managed to. It's basically made to look like a life or death situation for shock value. Like when escapologists leave it till the last second to escape a sealed tank of water etc. That's my theory anyway.
