  • I put together a compilation of videos showing "Close Calls" when scuba diving and Woody decides he wants to challenge himself to NOT pause or talk at all for the first 3 minutes of the video...can he do it?

  • @haeudaly
    @haeudaly 2 года назад +75

    It's so easy for newer divers to look at something like the wreck scenario and think its no big deal. I especially see this over-confidence in divers with a little bit of experience. When you think you've got skills and there's nothing that could go wrong because you know it all. I see it all the time with newly minted Divemasters that haven't actually experienced a real problem on a dive before.
    The super important thing that Gus and Woody talk about are the risks of diving outside of your training. There are specific risks associated with specific forms of diving and until you are taught about or experience them, you simply don't know of the possibilities. Its true that an untrained diver can enter a wreck and come out alive, as seen in this video, but in those scenarios, the margin for error becomes extremely small and the consequences become extremely serious. Doing something like this and NOT having a catastrophe occur only furthers the misunderstanding of the dangers, and makes divers even more over-confident to push the limits again. Its a negative feedback loop and a deadly cycle. Don't be that diver. Get training, be humble, and be safe. Nothing in there is worth dying over.

    Thanks for the videos. Love your work.

      I was an open water diver with a boyfriend dive partner, and we had been in and founded dive clubs in FL. On a large military-ship wreck dive, my partner started to enter the open doorway of the top portion (bridge?) of the wreck, and I motioned "no", because we both knew: 1) that penetrating a wreck required wreck certification, 2) he didn't have a reel line or other equipment required, 3) it wasn't part of the plan, and 4) he knew I wasn't going to follow, so he was leaving me alone on a large wreck at about 90 feet. He went in and disappeared. I waited and watched for bubbles. Eventually I went and found another couple on the other side of the large ship, but there wasn't anything we could do but wait and see if he showed up. (Going in after him would have been a double mistake.) I stayed with the couple, did our safety stops, got on the boat, and within a few minutes my partner got on the boat. I gave him a piece of my mind, and he was unphased. He explained he'd come out some other doorway on the other side. What upset me more was that our very-safety-conscious dive club and members didn't do much to back me up in reprimanding him for deserting a partner and for uncertified wreck penetration.

      @betsybarnicle8016 2 года назад +2

      @S M Shortly after that. The writing was on the wall.
      But he did teach me to Zen dive, which was how to dive with minimal weights, using a combination of gear adjustments, breathing control, and mind control. The goal was a relaxed, controlled dive with 0 to 4 lbs. (warm s. FL, wearing just a skin or bathing suit, no neoprene)

    16:30 Rule of thumb for the anchor situation: you should drop 4-6x the depth. It's the weight of the chain that holds the boat in place and not the just the anchor. The chain had almost no slack on it. Also before going off of the boat they should 1. Drop anchor. 2. pull on the anchor (turn the engine in opposite direction of the drop point) and feel the anchor chain tighten. Turn the engine off and drift for some time allowing the boat to come to equilibrium with wind before feeling secure to come off the boat.

But the more I watch the more I appreciate it. And am almost ashamed to say I was bothered by it a little bit. Woody please keep pausing and doing your thing. That's what makes the channel your channel, and you're such a great guy. Definitely like the video playing longer. Not to say I don’t appreciate Woodys input because I do. As a current non-diver with plans to start, the info is both helpful and educational, which is the main reasons I watch your channel. BUT, it is nice to watch the video play without being stopped repeatedly, without breaking up the flow. I feel like letting it play while talking over it is much better as the video can be viewed WHILE being educated about what’s going on. Just my personal opinion. Either way I’m a big fan of the channel. Knowledge from people with high levels of experience is one of the most valuable, n often underrated gifts one can receive. Those of us learning are very grateful for it and just speaking for myself… When I do start diving, I will be more comfortable and ultimately safer because of you. So thank you, sincerely… also.. Woody, sometimes less is more… pausing the pausing 😏👍🏻😁.
    Y’all are awesome.

    Nothing has made me want to learn how to dive as much as watching your vids. Also, I enjoy the pausing. It shows a comprehensive line of thought. As new information happens, you pause and formulate a response or plan. New info afterwards either reinforces a line of thought or branches into a new thought process. If you just watch and then react, you're only reacting to one process as opposed to the countless potential problems or processes. I enjoy how thorough you guys are in these vids. 1. I paused before Woody could get started lol. But I would think that penetration diving should be treated the same as cave diving, enclosed area, limited to no light, silt buildup, tight spaces and no easy escape if something goes wrong.
    2. The next challenge I feel should be a blind challenge, one where Gus doesn't know what's coming up and reacts alongside Woody. I know that Gus checks for safety reasons to make sure nothing is too graphic or would violate TOS so maybe having someone else preview them and make sure they are fine like a long time viewer that you have positive feedback with or have another dive channel recommend some.

    Dude! That guy @ 15:45 closest to the camera actually grabbed the anchor so it didn't hit the person in front of him. That was awesome.

    Holding your breath for 3 minutes? Feasible. Holding your thoughts for the same amount of time? Now that requires willpower. Well done, Woody.

    You guys are awesome. People that are criticizing you for giving your opinion and facts are on a high horse. They know what you're doing here they just have the biggest ego that they don't want to hear anybody say anything about somebody else because they want to be the one to do it. I'm not into big water and I'm scared of things in the water but I've never seen the ocean and I'm 42 years old. One day I want to see the ocean but I am super terrified after watching your videos LOL but I'm not going to let that take me away from seeing the ocean. You guys are my favorite RUclipsrs I've been binge watching you for days. Keep up the good work thank you

    I can not even imagine the training it take and the ability to stay calm it takes when in a silt out especially in a cave. I used to live in the mountains and I've been caught in severe blizzards while driving. You can not even see the front of your own truck. I can't imagine being in that situation while under water, in a cave, and being on a time limit.

    It's entirely possible that the zebra mussels from the second video are from the Great Lakes. But an (un)fun fact is that they're an incredibly invasive species that have made huge negative impacts on the Great Lakes ecosystems.

    I just found you guys the other day and I've been binging your vids nonstop since. I have a Severe fear of the dark and a (frankly inexplicable seeing as I love swimming and developed it out of the random blue) pretty bad phobia of deep water, so I doubt diving will ever be for me, let Alone cave diving
    But hearing two experts talk about their passion not only in detail but in a very educational way that even laypeople can understand, and with the chemistry and banter you two have going on, is both entertaining and actually super relaxing in its own weird way. I think in one videos you guys yourselves put it that cave diving isn't inherently safe, but can be done safely, and hearing exactly how takes the edge off and lets me enjoy footage of these spectacular underground spaces without the anxiety I used to feel
    cheers to woody for managing to contain himself for 3 whole minutes! definitely earned that like!!
