  • Ramsbottom on the East Lancashire Railway was the scene as a steam loco, completed in 2019, crossed the main street, with cars waiting at the level crossing.
    GWR 2900 "Saint" Class No. 2999 Lady of Legend is a 4-6-0 steam locomotive. It was based on the frames and boiler of 4900 "Hall" Class No. 4942 Maindy Hall, and was mostly constructed at Didcot Railway Centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire, where it is now based. Described as "building the 78th Saint", the project started in the 1970s to look at building a new 'Saint', since none of the original class-members were preserved.

    Always a privilege to watch a steam loco.
    In the age of steam when we arrived at London terminals, I always used to say thank you to the driver and fireman.
    It never ceased to impress me that the great heavy train had travelled many miles at speed by the efforts of one man shovelling coal.

      On long express runs decent drivers did help with the firing.

      Here they open them by hand. On a few they have a dedicated person simply there to man the crossing gates [Ashtown and Clonsilla in Dublin for example] but on other tracks the guardsman gets down and closes then opens the gates again after the train has gone through [on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line for example] but all are done manually. … but why the traffic lights?

    • @spentacle
      @spentacle Год назад +3

      To stop the traffic so the gates can shut, same as any barrier crossing

    • @dereklund2321
      @dereklund2321 Год назад +5

      Before the lights were installed the signalman had to wait for a suitable gap in the traffic before opening the gates. The traffic on Bridge St. had become so heavy that at times it became impossible to find a gap in the traffic. There were also near misses when certain motorists tried to force their way through. The lights were installed about 15 years ago and operation of the box was transformed. The green to red and back to green sequences are triggered automatically by normal operation of the crossing gate control levers.

      @@dereklund2321 Thank you Derek, that answer makes a lot of sense. Also many thanks for the info on how the lights are activated.

      Unusual that they went for “traffic lights” and not the modern alarms and wig-wags as seen on automatic level crossings ~ this hasn’t even got an alarm

    Churchward cabs were crap.

      Churchward cabs certainly had a reputation for being Spartan. Compare the cabs of Collets Castles and Gresley's A1 as built, both built 1923. Collets were better, but not as good as Gresley's!

      Quite agreee, the soot & steam emmited doesn't seem to kill trackside trees, they seem to thrive ! Dr B in those days said lines must close because the government has to prop up B.R £ one million , now your Third Reich has Britain on the verge of bankruptcy.
      The Americans must accept Vladimir Putin's offer , North Korea are preparing for nuclear war against capitalism, not just that but 2 groups of expert Russian hackers can tell you in which offshore banks & how much tax free dosh their is , your thieving government has stolen € trillions , just think how many new locos that could build .We are a grandmother has left you a treasure to be safely mined with modern technology .Love these magnificent machines from the humble shunter to the King & Pacific class .Full steam ahead Britain from myself in Spain 🇪🇸.
