I'm a former ABH3 USS Boxer LHD4 V1 Div Crash and Salvage. I'm a Plankowner and did Westpac 1997. I loved the Herriers! Those jets are probably the best close combat ground pounder ever! It might not have the total power of a A10. But man they can load out some serious punch! I'll always love the Herrier! Edit: Harrier sorry about my spelling!
It’s amazing. With 2 auxiliary fuel tanks and 4x bombs plus a Litening pod in the Center pylon, all it takes is just 10 sec of full throttle for the Harrier to go airborne.
I was with VMA-513 when we got the first AV-8B's on the West Coast. Sgt. Mayne 1987-1994. Airframes 6095/6055 MOS. Went to work at YPG afterwards... Semper Fi!!! An old Bastard Marine
Flying the Harrier is a bit more difficult than you think. Because they have two flap/nozzle settings that allow you to fly backwards which can confuse you and probably I'm not the only one that has made that mistake about the nozzle settings.
This is the first time it occurred to me to see a clip, let alone in person an av-8b...its fantastic... btw...it looks like the pilot has his job cut out for him just by getting and strapping into the cockpit...lol.
Funny guys. When I was at VMAT-203 at CPNC, we had both AV8As and TA4Js. The Heinnman Hotrod sure was an easy bird to work on compared to the British built aircraft.
I worked there in the early 90's saw these guys out there almost every day flying these awesome machines! The second hottest place on the planet...! It's usually 112 avg, but it got up to 123 degrees a few times while I was there!
@@MikeHalk100 True. It got hot. But when I was there with VMA-513 in '77 maintaining the Brit-built A models, the Tower would fly a single Black Ball flag when the temp went above a certain threshhold. ~100*F. Slow down. When it hit 110*F -- Two Black Balls -- cease ops. I worked the swing shift in AVI, At 1600, the birds were too hot to touch. No white sun shelters then. We'd generally work on the planes inside the hangar until after sundown. The desert cools off at night. We were all over those birds when the night was full on.
+buralrockt It's no picnic. I saw a kid bust his mouth at an airshow. They were letting people sit in the cockpit for a few minutes. They brought over a mobile ladder after that. Very small surface area.

I think I'd prefer having a Harrier fly CAS than an A-10. Less of a chance of hitting friendlies
I was out there when they recorded this. God I don't miss yuma lol

no matter what the f-35b can do, this will always be my favorite :)

We had VMA214 the Black Sheep out of Yuma on board the Boxer. A lot of history with them also! Go Marine Air! And always Fly Navy!

Of all the fighters this is my favorite.
Fighters?
It is an ground attack aircraft.
Reminds me of the good ole days when we tagged a few of 513’s birds with “A-4s Forever” in day-glow pink!

That was me… and it’s called ordnance tape
Cool plane👍
As a thought, do you have Harriers (The bird) in the US? The aircraft is named after two hovering birds of prey, Hen & Marsh Harriers.
+Simon Watts yes we have Hen Harriers in North America
in Kingman airport?
Pachajournal06 MCAS Yuma, Arizona
Love #! F14 Tomcat, Love #2 Harrier, so far!
