I love my debut 1st run Bokeh (#99). It's such an incredible headphone and doesn't cost an absurd amount of money. Expensive yes, but it's worth every dollar in my opinion. I've demoed ZMF's Caldera closed and many other headphones that cost 2-5x the amount of Bokeh, and I prefer the Bokeh.
Hey Josh, Great review of the Bokeh! I met you at SoCal CanJam and we talked about the LCD-X. Your preference in sound signature seems close to mine, and that’s why I think you need to try the Verite Closed and compare it side by side to the Bokeh. In my opinion, it has everything the Bokeh has on steroids with more dynamic snap, impactful bass, natural midrange timbre, and even crispier more detailed treble. The added decay with softer wood (mine is in Monkeypod) adds a 3D holographic presentation that is highly addicting. And yes, I own a Mogwai OG upgraded with Jupiter caps by Justin. The pairing with the VC is amazeballs. If you’re ever in SoCal again, send me a PM and you’re welcome to stop by and check it out. 👍🏼
People in this hobby are way too concerned about graphs and measurements. Does it sound good to you? Great, that's all you need. It 'not being along the target line' is so boring.
It's a way to contextualize it. For example. I can tell you that a car has an inline 6 cylinder with turbo, goes 300hp, with 253lbs of torque. But it won't tell you how it drives, steers, accelerates or how comfortable it feels. You need both to tell the proper story in order to describe an abstract concept.
Bokeh is my favorite closed-back as well. Replaced my long-time favorite Audioquest NightOwl. It's a heavy headphone, but the weight is distributed better than any other heavy headphone I've tried. It's ZMF's best value headphone and I'm glad it's getting some attention.
Same. I love the NightOwls for what they are and are supremely comfortable. But the Bokeh just blows them away, he'll they blow all my headphones sway until the Tungstens arrive next week. I love them. Not light but still very comfortable. Do they best anything? No, but as an all rounder, they are epic.
Glad you're giving ZMF another shot. Bokeh are fantastic (although I ended up switching to the Atrium Closed). Very very interested in the Mogwai review... it's on my radar for a tube amp upgrade.
Hey would you for sure consider the Atrium closed an upgrade to the bokeh? I liked bokeh but it didn’t have enough resolution/sparkle for me so I’ve been thinking of AC
@@sfs03 I definitely prefer the AC (even though I thought the Bokeh's tuning was excellent). AC has more resolution and the high end does have nice definition to it as well as the sub-bass is more prominent vs the Bokeh's mid-bass. A big factor for me was the fit though; I really prefer the round ZMFs with the full chassis. The different headband and thinner pads on the Bokeh just weren't as comfortable for me.
@@lxmcc I'm looking at the Bokeh, Atrium Closed and Vérité Closed. Are you saying that the Bokeh has more mid bass? I do like a punchy mid bass as well as sub :). Have you tried the Vérité Closed?
@@jonnyshaw85 Bokeh has great bass all around but mid-bass is more prominent. On the AC, again great (amazing) bass all-round but I found it reached deeper than the Bokeh. I used to have the Verite Closed, although not at the same time as the other two, it was also more mid-bass focused but had less quantity than the other two. Overall VC was fast and punchy sounding but I sold it after getting a Caldera which I found did everything I liked about the VC better (along with other stuff like vocals which never sounded quite right to me on VC, but I never had a chance to try them on tubes).
A closed back that I am curious about your opinion on the is the Aune SR7000 for $600. Apparently it sounds a lot like an open back even though it is closed. There is only like a total of 3 reviews of it on RUclips so I am curious what you have to say about it considering how much you and other reviewers liked the Aune AR5000.
I bought a Bokeh during preorders, I have production unit number 58. It's just a wonderful headphone, you nailed just about every reason I can think of. I use it about as often as my ZMF Verite Open (which is awesome but it was expensive so it should be lol), and more than I use my Hifiman Edition XS, which is also a fantastic headphone. My poor HD6XX hardly ever get used anymore, but I still can't bring myself to sell them.
Bokeh is my current most used ZMF in my collection too! Love it! It doesn’t beat the Atrium closed… but it’s just so easy to get along with I forget to swap it out with the Atrium closed.
@ thanks for your response. In the fortunate position of being able to choose between a ZMF and can’t for the life of me choose which one to get.. going to CanJam NYC ‘25to hear them. I’ve heard the Atrium open before but don’t know if I will crave that extra bit of sub bass..
The Bokeh are a solid headphone, but I have to say ZMF customer service is not no matter the praise you may hear in the cultish forums of head-fi. They charge luxury prices for essentially luxury products, but don’t you expect the service to go along with it. I had an issue with one of their “drop” sales where they post one-off or rare models, but also mix in pre-orders for irregular and b stock headphones while reusing pictures for the one-offs. The ordering system is very unclear and purposefully obscure. I ended up ordering the wrong headphone as a first time purchaser during these sales and they refused to cancel and refund my order and went ahead to blame me for the issue. I found the whole experience wholly unprofessional and amateur and now I have to do a chargeback. Never have I experienced such an issue in my decades of purchasing things online. They’re only out to make a buck, no matter what they say. Once they have your money, they can hardly care.
You're making me intrigued, but I can't keep buying gear even from curiosity anymore. I just bought my endgame for what I wanted (immersive sound) Hifiman Arya Organic and I just can't justify spending more on this hobby now even if I wanted to try something different aswell.
I heard the bokeh open at axpona on a Geshelli a3 pro, then I bought the A3, now I need the bokeh open, tax return??? Thanks Josh!!! And thanks to Zack and the whole zmf family for the great convo at the show too!!! They were almost as much fun as the Geshelli family 😊
Have a bokeh stabilized headphone and I love them. The sound of them are incredible, with an Questyle M-15i portable amp and iPhone 15 max. Or XDUOO TA-22 DAC tube headphone amp.
This was amongst my 3 favs at one of the can jams. Zach and his team were some of the most helpful and most humble at the show. It also sounded fantastic with their beautiful homage amp and sounded great with many different genres of music. Unfortunately the pressure on my jaws was a dealbreaker; otherwise, I would've gotten it.
Thank you Josh for this well-detailed review! I am honestly going to look into getting the Bokeh in the future. The wooden ear cups are just gorgeous that ZMF put together. I will use a budget amp to connect to my PC to watch RUclips videos. I currently own an AB1266 Abyss headphone. I am saving up for an endgame DAC and amp setup to plug the 1266 and the TV while gaming. I hope your child is happy and healthy, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, Josh.
ZMF are taking the community by storm! Everyone loves the Bokeh and Atrium so much that I'm very tempted to get a pair of one of them and a tube amp. Speaking of which, the Kenzie OG amp would probably do just as well with the Bokeh and for less money as these transducers aren't transparent enough to warrant such a fancy amp mas the Mogwai. I would think that Mogwai would be better suited to Auteur or even Atrium if you roll up to some fancier tubes. Good review with some nice comparisons and recommendations.
I own both. The Bokeh is still not going to compare to the Edition XS in terms of crispness and speed, and the Edition XS has that midrange dip that the Bokeh definitely doesn't, so vocals sound better on the Bokeh. The Edition XS has way more soundstage but they have similar imaging. The timbre is hands down better on the Bokeh. Empirically, I use the Bokeh considerably more often. And of course one is open backed and one isn't. There's always going to be at least a very minor resonance in the sound on a closed back. Bokeh is more comfortable.
ZMF could go with a magnetic ear pad design but the huge problem is they're already a custom in house earpad design and that would just ramp up the price of switching to a magnetic design specifically especially for one headphone or any headphone for that matter and that would make the headphones ear pads cost $150 so it's just better to have a lip design plus changing it would definitely ruin the sound quality that it currently has unless you want to go with unless you want to go with an auduze LCD style design so it's better just to be happy with the lip design so don't change please
Wish you compared against the VC. VC has a bit more speed and dynamics. Also Stealth and VC are a step up in price so always like to see if it can compete up.

Graphs are meaningless. Prime example of why is you saying how nice the bass is, even though it takes a transatlantic flight outside of your preference bounds.
I'll be the irritating guy who corrects your pronunciation. But, in my defense, I've been irritated for years by photo youtubers who also mispronounce this word. It's a Japanese word and it has a super simple pronunciation: it rhymes with "okay". It means blurry, unclear. It was adopted by the photo community to refer to pleasingly out-of0focus areas around an in-focus subject. It's not pronounced boe-kah or boe-kuh, and it's not a good name for a headphone. I still want these ZMFs, however.

Boak-ah
