As a 14 year recovered alcoholic, I can say I know plenty about addiction struggle and I hate that in movies they always want to simplify it in external factors: the boyfriend, the dad; the parties, etc. There’s always a group of elements that are far more deep than just pointing at one person. I also hate how Hollywood romanticizes addiction and suffering, yes there is a certain poetic aspect in all tragedies but Hollywood’s films make people’s lives very cartoony.
I initially read this as "as a 14 year old recovered addict" and I was like HUH
Appreciate the insight.

Quite a mental strength for kicking the habit at such a young age! Keep it up!
@@CallOfCutie69 No, I’ve been clean for 14 years. I was young, but not that young when I quitted.
Thanks :)
Walk Hard is the best musical biopic.
Walk Hard and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story laugh in the faces of the slew of bullshit generic music biopics
And Love and Mercy!
Ray was excellent
I saw the father was involved with this and completely tuned out. It has the makings of boiler plate biopic.
biopics are the Elvis impersonators and fake beard Santas of movies
Hollywoo biopics...they're like adaptations of wiki entries
Give me something that isn't trying to be factual like I'm Not There over something like this any day
I really hope that someday Jack O'Connell will become a bigger star. I consider him an underrated performer. I became a fan of him after seeing his performance in Jodie Foster's directorial effort "Money Monster" from 2016.
Frankly my dear... I'd rather watch 'Amy' or just listen to her music or remember the first time when I heard her sing on the radio (in the fairly early days) and thought "Wow! Who the heck is this?" as the hair stood up on my arms and I got major tingles✨
Winehouse's father's involvement in this movie made me really not wanna watch it. But thanks for reviewing it though.
I was wondering what felt off about this movie, figured it had to do with who was involved but this checks. The dad in the movie is v saviour coded
I SO enjoy your reviews! They are the most cerebral and well thought out of ANY film critic on YT or elsewhere!
ABSOLUTELY HERE FOR THIS FOOKIN' NUKE ON Sam Taylor Johnson. Unload the clip!
Damn Maggie looks good. Gorgeous.
strange taste!
@@elivincent3795 Because?
She's a smokeshow 💯
Ill say it again. Some of the best vids about cinema.
Are you going to review ‘I saw the tv glow’ ?
Yes - listen to Frank, first album, then Back to Black, second and last, for all you need to know. Love is a Losing Game is the great Bond theme that never was
The best Biopic i have seen is Malcom X, it actually feels like it is saying something wider rather than just giving a list of things the subject did.
It was also really well directed, some very interesting and artistic choices
The Ray Charles biopic "Ray" is possibly the best I've ever seen.
It was a nice 360 of his life and covered all his major relationships, personal & business-wise.
Sometimes the trailer is enough. This is one of those times i knew the movie would be weak from the trailer alone. The complete opposite reaction i had to The Dark Knights trailer. I remember telling my brother Its clear Heath is killing it. I think hes going to win an oscar.
12:06: A well researched and presented documentary is by far superior to any biopic which is (at best) superficial info-tainment.
My theory is the script had too long a running time, so they cut scenes out (that would’ve tied loose ends) rather than cutting out segments of the story. Family, friendship, career, love life and personal life is a lot to fit in 2 hours.
Everything you say is so spot-on and I absolutely loved your analysis btw.
Something I definitely would love to say is that the music soundtracks in the movie was awesome. I loved the way they would play to relate to a part of the story. I imagine the non-Winehouse songs that played were ones she claimed as her favourites.
Back to Black is my favourite song by her so I love the movie title, aha.
I think her going up the stairs was basically her going up to her room where her bodyguard found her dead the next day. It kind of reminded me of this one soap opera where the character died in real life, and the last thing they shot of her was her going upstairs to go to sleep.
Sounds like the weird ending in Sid & Nancy . Where they take off together in a cab.
I remember Sid and Nancy I think it was pretty good movie.
Where can I get a pizza? 🍕
I wore some black in memory of Roger Corman too.
Probably the best review you've done. People with addiction are broken and literally incomprehensible.
I been a fan for your channel for about a couple years now I enjoy your analysis of films and I really enjoy that you have a very calming voice. That’s what I enjoy about listening to your voice very peaceful..
High level film critique ASMR
Hope your going to review I saw the tv glow..love to know what you think.
Wait, I just saw The Iron Claw, there was a fifth brother?
6 actually Jack Jr died young and was covered but Chris was ANOTHER son that died of suicide as well. They left his story out because the director thought that his death would make the story not believable. Crazy shit
What are your thoughts on Malcolm X? Or any other Spike Lee films? I think it’s the greatest biopic ever.
While realizing your question is directed to Maggie, Spike Lee's Malcolm X is a perfect example of the point in my earlier posting. While Denzel Washington did a magnificent performance emulating Malcolm, the film is infotainment since it is filled with historical distortions which can lead the viewer to misunderstandings.
If one wants to truly learn about Malcolm, watch the documentary Malcolm X: Make it Plain. ( it's available on RUclips).
There's a kind of visual poetry to you wearing a beautiful black dress while discussing this particular film.
The movie didn't explain or even hint at where all of her pain was coming from. She was self harming with alcohol and sex way before she ever met Blake. The movie didn't explain or even hint at where Amy's daddy issues where coming from. Why is she attracted to an alcoholic loser.
I liked your critical take. If I’m honest I’m a sucker for these kinds of movies. I saw it with my wife who’s a big fan of Amy’s. She really liked it and it made a fan out of me. I poured through her catalog and understand now why she was so well loved. She was a gifted talent and a genius songwriter. As for the movie, I enjoyed the performances of the actors. My bar was low going in and it surpassed my low expectations. I wasn’t looking for any revelations because it’s just a movie. I am going to watch the documentary and listen to her music more.
When it comes to biopics, The Doors was charming. Of course, it helps if you take "the journey" in the proper frame of mind 😵💫
My favorite biopic is Control 🤘
So much of that movie was completely made up by Oliver Stone. I agree it was well done though. Val Kilmer was awesome.
Blake was the entire reason Amy was introduced to hard drugs and that was completely skimmed over. Amy started drinking after she found out about her fathers double life which fractured the family, and that was skipped over. They didn't show Amy's relationships with other artist and producers. She had many different artists who enjoyed her music that she befriended, none of that was depicted. Let's face it. Amys career was tragic, but if you're going to make a movie about it, tell the truth. They didn't show how Amy's life unfolded, how bad things had gotten and how the media turned against her.
If you'd like to ingest some great biographies of musicians, I'd highly recommend Hellfire by my favorite author Nick Tosches. Also, Screamin Jay Hawkins Greatest Hits by Mark Binelli is phenomenal.
One of Tosches' books is currently being made into a film with Oscar Isaak and Gerard Butler, and apparently Scorsese is a producer.
Should have been called CHASING AMY
Spot-on review, although I probably thought more highly of Abela's performance than you. The complexity of her portrayal was there. I have no doubt she would have welcomed and successfully tackled meatier material.
Couldn’t agree with your take on this more!!
We have The Doors, so isn't it about time we get a decent biopic on Jimi Hendrix's life? I think there were a couple done previously and they were terrible. And please, please, let's get rid of the red tape surrounding music in a biopic. Jimi would've wanted his music played at every opportunity.
Love and Mercy is another biopic that has a different approach
f--g fantastic review as always. beat the brakes outta mine 😭 agreed on Abela warming up as the film went on
I will watch it and comment later
i saw the tv glow review ? 😄
I was in a pub in Camden in 2008 buying a drink at the bar when I felt a shove in my back. When I turned around it was none other than Amy Winehouse fighting with some random bloke. I don't know what he did but the bouncers chucked him out.
Shame what happened to her, I liked the music. I think I'll skip the biopic, unless the bar fight scene is in it!
Not sure if it features your character, but the bar fights are definitely a major part of the film! Check it out!
@@CallOfCutie69 Now I want to watch it.
@@leejohnson3209 dew it!
To be fair, I think at this point it's pretty bold of us to assume or expect that these types of movies will capture much of the true essence. It's all so hyperfocused on making as much profit as possible by putting in as little time, effort, and investment as possible. Cash grabs 😔
As soon as she mentioned Blonde I'm out. That was a true disgrace. Wouldn't consider it a biopic or even good story or movie. Fts
They removed a brother?! Why?! Good God, I've got such little faith in filmmakers nowadays.
I love your channel. I'd love to see some videos on Abel Ferrara, Mary Harron, Bobcat Goldthwait, more Jim Jarmusch and Panos Cosmatos.
The subject matter is an interesting choice for a biopic. Amy Winehouse was not noteworthy or original from a contemporary music perspective. Even her minor break from Jazz into Top 40/sample-pop with the film’s namesake album was a flash in the pan. Why does this movie exist?
I heard they were making this and was completely turned off by the idea of a Hollywood Amy Winehouse biopic. As you stated, people really should just watch the Amy documentary or listen to her music. She is (in my opinion) one of the most interesting people to ever make music, and to simplify her is an insult. I’d rather see a film where they depict an excellent day she had, or something where she is having sessions making her music.
“Influences coming in from BLONDE” doesn’t sound like a promising assessment of this biopic hahahaha
Although I agree insofar as preferring a big swing-and-a-miss with that movie’s approach over the annoyingly conventional, self-serious and Wikipedia page-esque basic biopic template that’s become so persistent now. They almost seem like satire of their own genre by this point, the way WALK HARD was.
Gods please forgive me cause hooooly shit this girl 🔥
I enjoyed it.
Nowhere Boy was quietly excellent, but the films helmed by the director since haven’t fared well critically; this seems no exception.
I am totally unfamiliar w/ Winehouse’s music (all I ever heard was the trouble she put herself in) and biopics like this seldom if ever make me interested in learning about an unfamiliar artist.
A well-researched documentary would be far more entertaining, enlightening; I might be tempted to watch that, but quite frankly I got so tired of hearing about Winehouse’s foibles w/o ONCE hearing any of her songs, nah still not interested.
Nowhere Boy deserves a release or Directors Cut it's very underrated and damn shame Sam Johnson will most likely by non cinefiles be known as The 50 Shades of Grey director. Unless she makes an Academy Award winning masterpiece by some miracle. For what the Oscars are worth these days.
Maggie, biopics can be great, like any other genre. You just have to find the right movie. Raging Bull is a biopic and it's a masterpiece. So is Goodfellas. Amadeus. Ed Wood. The Elephant Man. Walk the Line. La Bamba. The Buddy Holly Story. Serpico. Lawrence of Arabia. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Etc. Don't fault the genre, fault the filmmaker.
Did you review or react to the Bob Marley - “One Love” movie 🎦 🎥 🍿 ?
I was just about to buy a regal ticket to watch alone at the movies for 10am but then watched this and I said “ oh forget it” 😮😂😊😊
I’ll stay home not wasting my time
Did they touch on her E.D ?
Is it just me or does Blake look exactly like Steve McQueen
Please review Evil Does Not Exist
Coming next week. (This week for Patrons).
Hard pass on this one. So tired of all these music biopics.
You mention that you are not a huge fan of the bio-pic, and neither am I. You also mentioned that the film doesn't try to understand Winehouse with any depth. And that hits on the reason that I don't care for most bio-pics. It's because a lot of the people are not worth of a bio-pic. They don't HAVE any depth. These are essentially uninteresting people. Winehouse was a musician who flourished for a short while before dying of alcohol poisoning I believe. I did not care for her music, and just because she made music does not make her interesting to me. They have made bio-pics out of all the truly interesting people, so we are down to the dregs at this point. A substance abusing musician does not deserve a movie, IMO.
biopics are so naff. they are so surface level but are are made because the studios know they make money and are fantastic awards fodder. love amy winehouse but do your self a favour and just watch the doc again.
i don’t know, maybe i need to watch this movie, but i just get over the fact that actress looks nothing like Amy. I think Vanessa Kirby could be a good pick, but not this one
We all now why. The bad boyfriend gives the girlfriend gravitas. Amy was an old super soul seeking authentic expression. Her boyfriend and her lifestyle was a form of expression. A self destructive one, unfortunately.
Difficult to capture a person's life within the span of 2+ hours or less biopic. Tragically she only lived till 27 like Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain.
noice!
Maggie looking hot af in black. 😍
I see what you did here.
😎🙏💯
Maggy do you like female puppies
👍🏿👍🏿
I cant relate to this channel anymore because I quit watching great movie
Kind of an insult. Still way too soon. Watch the doc.
She's been dead for thirteen years. When would you prefer the film was made?
You forgot to mention Oppenheimer as a biopic 😢
I was liker #420 hell yah. Anyways, this movie looks awful, saw the trailer a few times at the cinema n it just looks so typical biopic n the actress just didn’t really scream Amy to me
Watch and review Ship of Theseus ❤❤❤❤
Garbage film just like Elvis it completely bottles telling the real story, and instead focuses on oscar baiting the lead.
Look at Walk the Line for how you do a musician biopic properly.
Amy Winehouse was a drug dependent singer, who couldn't handle life... why do people try to portray her as a Ghandi like figure?
I can't feel bad for weak minded people, she made a choice and went out like a coward. So many people that are dying from cancer or something else would do anything for a 2nd chance at life.
