Having taken a number of long trips, the 2.4 gallon tank is about perfect, because it makes you take a break every 1.5 hours or so. Those breaks are important for maintaining focus.
I carry a 1 liter camping fuel bottle full of gas. I put fuel stabilizer in the gas, and just put it under the seat and forget about it. On two occasions I couldn’t find a gas station when I needed it, and that 1 liter of gas was enough to keep me going long enough to re-fuel.

I ride a motorcycle a Honda CB 125E from new it costs me 10$ to fill and gets me around the suburbs and local towns in a month it's very reliable and cheap IV also got a sports tourer Yamaha FJR 1300 06 model another bike that is bulletproof they will both probably outlive me I'll never sell them just leave them to my partner Stacey IV been riding since the 60s stay safe and upright love from Australia 🌏🦘 all bike's these days are reliable as long as there serviced on time just that some are much more expensive than the others

Great video. I have the GTS 300 HPE Supertech and have just completed a 1,500 km tour of the north Island of New Zealand. There were fantastic backroads as well as motorways to contend with and no problem at all with the 12" wheels. It felt stable and safe and I could easily cruise at 100-120kph....so, don't worry on that issue. I had a rack and a pretty big bag strapped to the back too. It makes a brilliant touring machine.

Glad you like the Vespa. As a senior citizen, I am unable to wrestle a motorcycle, so scooters are the answer. Ten years ago, I got a deal on a used Honda 150i, and I love it! Smooth ride, very maneuverable, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled engine and auto tranny. Oh, it’s made in Italy! Safe riding!

I just bought the exact same scooter you have. Same model etc 2 weeks ago. Just put over 100 miles on it learning to ride. I just turned 71, am 6'7", and weight 260 lbs. Never had a bike before. Because of the bottle neck with our economy right now I bought this because it happened to be in stock but the more I researched the scooter world I realized this was a gem and high quality. My 74 year old brother has a Piaggio BV 250 in Toronto for 14 years and still loves ridding frequently. I will say that the cost of ownership will be higher because of Vespa's more frequent maintenance schedules with more items at each iteration also. I added a matching top box when I bought mine here at the Downers Grove Illinois shop. That holds my full size helmet and more. Today I just installed a large windshield/windscreen for the fall season as we're getting cold around here in Illinois. Love the way it handles and keeps me warmer on the body and hands even with that large of an addition. Enjoy the ride and thanks for publishing this. I'm with ya!

I've got a Yamaha Smax (155cc scooter). It's surprisingly freeway capable for how small it is, and I've taken many multi hour trips on it. 11k miles later, still loving the bike. I've got a Burgman 650 for the bigger trips now, but the Smax never disappoints for its utility, speed capability, and ease of riding.

Love this video! My bike is the same year racing green version of this model. When I heard your comment about you forgetting to cancel the turn signal, the mod that fixes that problem is the SignalMinder SM-2. I'm sure Scooterwest has them. It is an auto cancelling unit for the turn signal as well as giving you four way running lights and light flashing when the brake is applied. You have to modify the turn signal switch which is an easy mod, or Scooterwest will sell you a switch that is already modified to a momentary switch. I have it on my Racing Sixties and I love it. For storage for your helmet, just get the color matched top box that is made for that bike. Finally, for this bike the modified ABS sensor tone wheel is a must. The stock HPE's are speed limited and come from the factory with an inherent speedo error. The after market tone wheel simply replaces the stock one on the rear wheel, eliminates the speedo error and gives you 6 MPH more top end. Your Bianco White Racing Sixties is the bomb straight up!

    • @ScooterNewbie
      @ScooterNewbie  2 года назад +1

Whoa! Thank you for the helpful information!! I never even thought to look into an option for turning off the turn signals. I thought it was just an accepted motorcycle thing I was supposed to just get used to! I still haven't bought a top box! I have my eye on a slick Givi one for going camping, though. I just haven't been prepared to fork over the cash just yet!

The new maxi scooters are very difficult to find, I was lucky to get the 2022 Suzuki Burgman 200, it’s a fantastic scooter with decent freeway speed. I was thinking about getting a Vespa 300 but the lighter weight and the smaller wheels were all concerns when traveling on the freeway, then there’s the cost. You have to be careful when considering a scooter for freeway travel, a big engine does not automatically equal safety. Also, due to speed limiters the Vespa 300 has a top speed of 85mph. I reached 75 on my Burgman 200, that’s all I attempted, it was very stable too.

Congrats! Regarding opening the glove box, I don't know if this is something they have changed over the years, but I have a 2014 GTS and I don't have to have the key in the ignition to open the glove box. I can just push inward on the entire ignition mechanism with my finger and the glove box will open (as long as it's not in the "locked" position). Give it a try. And you're absolutely right, the underseat storage really should fit a full face helmet, especially for the size. The underseat on my teensy 2002 Yamaha Vino 50 fit a full face fercripessake! When you're ready to fork out even more ridiculous money for accessories, the large top case does comfortably fit a full face (mine has room left over for gloves , a cover, and a light rain jacket). And if you decide to go that route, I recommend removing the lock from the top case and taking it to a locksmith to have it rey-keyed so the ignition key will open it. It's definitely worth the $10. It'll save you having to carry around 2 keys for the next ten years.

If you're worried about losing the key, get a spare from Scooter West. Their video on how to "pair" or program the key is pretty straightforward and really well done. You can get the key cut at a good local locksmith for really cheap. Sure it's going to be a $50 spare, but better to lose the spare and keep the originals safe.

If you’ve ever ridden away with the side stand down, you’ll discover it on your first left turn, just before you hit the pavement. Also the click sound on the Buddy scooters is terrific because leaving your turn signal on accidentally ( super easy with no audible feedback) is really dangerous because it can encourage other drivers to pull out in front of you, potentially leading to a crash. It’s amazing how many motorcycle review videos show the rider going straight down the road with his or her turn signal on. Both the side stand kill switch and blinker clicks actually can save you from a crash. I know this from many years of riding motorcycles that had neither. That’s an awesome looking Vespa!

If you start riding with it down it will kick the side stand up as soon as you lean to the left. I also just did a 1200 mile iron butt ride on my zuma 125. Some years ago I bought a used 2014 Vespa 300 GTV for my CA house. Very fun scooter, but is not really happy above an “indicated” 70mph. I had a windshield made for the Vespa which makes it more comfortable at high speed. For my TX house I bought a new out of the box 2018 Suzuki 650 Burgman Executive a year ago (they quit importing them for some reason in 2018). The Burgman’s CVT is not a smooth as the Vespa’s, but it is much more competent at high speeds. There is a “Scootroute” app for your phone that will give you routes that avoid freeways which is pretty cool.

If you are riding mainly in good weather on good roads. 12 inch wheels won't be a problem, especially if you don't ride at night.

You can add aftermarket audible blinkers for the scooter so you can hear the blinking. You can also add a 12v power outlet and UBS power outlet if the scooter doesn't have them. All these 3 are very cheap and easy to install. Just search on Amazon. I installed a 12v power outlet and UBS so I can run a small air compressor that fits under the seat and keep my phone GPS charged. I also carry a tire patch kit. At around the 9:10 mark I assume you're referring to the Rebel 1100 DCT. I can see how a 1000+ CC engine would seem a bit much especially for a new rider. I actually bought one within a few weeks of completing an MSF course and when first riding it I honestly thought I made a mistake. Fortunately there is a spacious parking lot near my home where I was able to get really familiar with the bike while practicing the low speed maneuvers learned at MSF. After spending about 30 minutes there I decided to just ride it around town even though I was still somewhat nervous. But riding it was an absolute blast!
A big plus, imho, when it comes to that bike is the 3 riding modes: standard, sport, and rain. Since buying it I've only had it on standard mode except the last time I rode when I had it on rain mode (least power, most braking ability and traction control). I enjoyed riding it this way because it felt easier to handle as opposed to standard mode, where the bike is still very much easy to handle. But for any beginner rider who ends up with the 1100 DCT, I would highly recommend using rain mode first because the power just in standard mode can be a bit overwhelming.

I have the 2018 GTS300 Touring model. That year the Touring model came with a rear AND a front rack. I mount a small/flat 1.3 gallon motorcycle fuel tank on the front one for long trips. I also disconnected the engine kill switch on the kickstand because I need to get off my bike and open a gate, etc and I don't need the government controlling the safety factors in my life. I also ordered the matching rear trunk for the rear rack (which is also part of the Touring model) and then I keyed it to match my ignition key. It holds a full-face helmet. I do ride the interstate and it will do 80 mph all day long. I liked my original 1976 Vespa with the manual clutch. You'd clutch it and twist the grip to change gears which was really cool. Be seen and be safe. I wear a safety yellow/green helmet, matching jacket and gloves! Also please put a Modulating headlight on your bike from Kisan Technologies. Most motorcycle accidents happen at intersections. A modulating headlight will make you visible as you are approaching the intersection, which is something that a steady headlight does not do. There's a lot of science behind that which I won't get into here. The second most prevalent motorcycle accident is being rear-ended at stop lights. Get a flashing brake light and the problem is also cured. And I sure hope Vespa someday puts auto canceling turn signals on the bike. My wife's Can-Am Ryker trike has that and it's so great!

Thank you for making me feel a little less crazy. I get more comments than not on this video about me not loving the engine shut off kickstand. I just need to open my garage, and my smaller scooters have let me do this just fine! So I'm with you!
I just installed some light upgrades, but I hadn't thought of the modulating headlight in particular. I tend to flash the headlight as I approach the scarier intersections, and it didn't even occur to me that there could be an aftermarket solution for what I'm doing without thinking. Seriously appreciate the insight on that!

@@ScooterNewbie Yes, I tend to disable that annoying kickstand kill switch on most every bike I buy but certainly on all scooters without a manual clutch (the Honda CT125 and other Honda bikes with the automatic clutch also). Have I ever ridden away with the kickstand down in the old days before these new switches on modern kickstands? Yes. But it never caused a problem. I just hear the kickstand as it contacts the road and I kick it back up. After all, you are moving forward so when it contacts the road is just pushes it back to up position. I think it's totally unnecessary. The Kisan headlight modulator came into existence in 2001 when the federal government passed the law that they were legal. The first couple years I got stopped by every cop in the US and I had to show them a copy of the federal law (which can't be infringed upon by state and local laws) and everything was cool, except one state cop in my home state of NM. He said if he caught me on the road again with it on he was going to write me a ticket. I tried to get him to write me a ticket then and there but he wouldn't. I contacted AMA attorneys when I got home and they really wanted to get him into court. I also contacted our state attorney general and spelled it out for him. He contacted the head of the State Patrol and told him what they couldn't do. He sent out a letter to all State Patrol offices telling them, "Don't ticket motorcycles with "flashing" headlights (they are modulating, not flashing, there is a difference. Flashing would be illegal.) because we don't have time to enforce the law." He wouldn't admit they "couldn't" ticket us, he wanted it to look like they were doing us a favor. But I never got stopped again. Oh, I have a few people pull off the road when they see me coming, thinking I'm an emergency vehicle, but that's OK. That just means they saw me and that's what it's all about. If anyone ever says, "I hate those flashing headlights" I just say, "Oh, then you saw me? Great... that's what they are supposed to do." ha ha. There's a scientific reason people don't see you when they are stopped at an intersection that I won't get into here. But it's legit and they can save your life.
