No kidding, I learned more from this lesson than I have in 1033 days in a row of Duo Lingo! Learning the why instead of purely trying to memorize has flipped a switch for me! Thank you and keep up the great videos!
I've used Duolingo for 5 years for French, Spanish and Japanese! It's a good app for building vocabulary, but it's not good if you're trying to become fluent in speaking! In Duolingo, I get frustrated when I type out a 15 word answer and get it wrong, because I forgot an "s" in one of the words... I mean, in conversation, nobody cares if you've forgotten a single letter lol.
The trick with Duolingo is it doesn't stand by itself. For me I'm doing the following: 1) Duolingo, I got a paid subscription and do it quite regularly. 2) Using @Spanish with Qroo Paul (this channel) to understand theory, this video is great and I'm going to work through the whole series. 3) Also in youtube, studying the alphabet, numbers, telling time. 4) I got a tutor. 5) Starting to watch youtube videos that are in Spanish. 6) Learning the lyrics of spanish songs I happen to like (I'm into salsa dancing). 7) Soon I'll be practicing face to face at meetups...

I always wanted to learn a second language. Now that I'm retired, I have the time. I have been using the translator app. To check my pronunciation. I don't know if it's a good idea? The results have been less than what I hoped. Anyway I think your lesson are great and I plan to continue. Thanks again.

Despite having a number of years of Spanish I picked up on a few tidbits. The bigger picture you present is to look for commonalities and patterns. I love learning Spanish because for me it's like a puzzle. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how the sentence fits together in context. I believe there is a certain amount of memorizing and learning proper grammar required (typical language teachers focus on this aspect). I've never been taught Spanish by a native english speaker. The fact that you have on the ground experience is a huge benefit. Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks for watching, Rosemary. These early lessons will be a bit too basic for you at your level; however, I will be working in the subjunctive and more difficult constructions by lesson 10 or so.

Thanks, Rick. I failed at learning Spanish until I started comparing it to my English. That changed everything and I became conversational quickly and later reached fluency. As a result, that's how I teach it now. I should have the third lesson out tomorrow.
I keep coming back to this series after being state side for very long because I my opportunities to speak Spanish with anyone over here are minimal and I feel clumsy trying.. Just want to say I appreciate you leaving this series up as it's great!! Gracias!

And I just moved to Ecuador on a tight budget (tutor unlikely!), your "tricks" and way of teaching are such a relief for me. Muchas gracias!
I agree absolutely with your comments- I have been learning Russian in a similar way (contextual) because at age 60, memorising just doesn’t work for me. Today is day 1 of learning Spanish from absolutely nothing and your approach is excellent. THANK YOU 🙏

First I have to say you are doing a great job to help English speakers to learn Spanish, sometimes it is an advantage to come from own experience as a learner than from university with an academic approach to teach people. At the age of 65 I started to learn Spanish just for fun. One of the first things I discovered were the many similarities between English and Spanish. Only when it comes to pronunciation it is an advantage to be a German native speaker, we use a lot of similar sounds like the Spanish and even the pronunciation rules are often similar, even when the writings are different. Beside the similarities for the endings .. al and the change from ..tion to ..ción I discovered another one, the change form ..ty to ..dad for many words like society->sociedad, university->universidad and another good thing is, the ..dad endings like the ..ción endings are always female, "La conversación en la universidad era muy formal."
I also can't believe they were not very popular. Then again, I have noticed that his main channel has gone the way of the Kinetic Kennons, where everything seems to be some kind of endorsement or outright sponsorship. I used to trust his videos completely, but now I take them all with a grain of salt.
I’ve never understood the problem people have with sponsored videos. The creators provide this information to you for free, in large part. But, they need to make a living just like you are. If you’ve only been watching Paul’s videos for a short time, and you’re skeptical about sponsored videos (welcome to social media!) then maybe you haven’t come to know him and to trust that what he’s recommending is well thought out and is what he believes in. But if like me, you’ve been watching him for a long time, then that’s a harsh judgment.
Thank you for your first Spanish lesson. You are an excellent teacher. You made the cognate tricks easier to understand. I was so proud of myself I could do the exercises with confidence. Please continue doing more lessons. Muchas gracias señor.
In case you still read the comments, I've moved from Canada to Argentina where very few people speak English. I am enjoying learning Spanish with you. Well done.
Although I've been learning Spanish for over five years, and have been living in Mexico for almost four, this video was an excellent refresher, thanks Paul - Anne
Thanks for taking on this project. I’ve been in Mexico for 9 months and have mainly been listening. Your early lessons have helped with recognizing the pronunciation. The natives have been very helpful.
Hi Paul. I paid for a course that convinced me to ' acquire' the language through story reading. I have done a lot of that, reading the story, listening to the story, reading and listening at the same time. It has its benefits, developing an ear for the language. However, I just thought there was something missing. They focus little on the grammar. Discovering you on youtube was the missing link I have been looking for! Thanks. You are a heck of a guy.
Brilliant! This first lesson contained far more informacion* about Spanish than my first 10 Babbel lessons. The organización* is clear and well thought out and the presenter’s outline ingeniously anticipates the PRACTICAL needs of an English-speaking beginner trying to learn Spanish. ThisQroo Paul fella is an excellent communicator as well as an inspired teacher and has given me back my expat sparkle for attempting to learn a new language. One tip (or perhaps, warning). If this single video were a meal, it would be considered a large feast. Albeit only about a half hour long, it is VERY calorie dense - linguistically. So you may need to take small bites, pause, and chew on what you have learned at various points. And you may not be able to finish it all in one sitting. I myself plan to return to the lesson as I would a favorite restaurant. It’s that good. *I learn this “ación” trick of converting English words to Spanish in this first lesson!
Thanks for the feedback. I realized a bit too late that these lessons were a bit too calorie intensive for most folks. Statistically speaking, the series performed poorly so I stopped after 7 lessons. Now I make much shorter lessons. :)
I agree! It's super dense! I am so so so happy to have found this though. It's exactly what I was looking for when I came to youtube to see it i could learn more Spanish beyond a formal greeting! Fabulous job!!!🎉
I am finding this very helpful. I will be moving to Mexico later this year and I have tried learning different ways , but I find your instruction very helpful especially with pronunciation.
I think you will like the course. The emphasis is on Mexican Spanish and being able to communicate during common situations: shopping, eating out, banking, medical needs etc.
Thank you for your very clear and confidence-building way to learn Spanish - it's great. FYI...re your comment about the double consonants in English, for example in 'recommendation', there is, in fact, a grammar rule called the 'double the consonant' rule, which ties in with a rule called the 'vowel-consonant-vowel' rule. This states that if you have a word like 'tap' (with a short 'a' sound) and you want to make it continuous, you have to double the consonant to make it 'tapping'... otherwise it would become 'taping'. .. and tape is a vowel/consonant/vowel word (with a long vowel sound). Therefore, as the letter 'o' in the word 'recommendation' is a short vowel, it's necessary to double the 'm' after it to keep it sounding short. I hope that's clear...and yes, I am an English Teacher...! 😀
Hello Paul, my profession is teaching language and from this one lesson I am looking forward to taking your whole course! This is great. My Spanish is intermediate level, but it has been a while since I've really used it very much, so I am starting at the beginning for a review. I am so grateful I found you for both the information about Mexico and for this course. Thank you!
Everyone needs to watch this video. This video was seriously life changing for my Spanish! I'm sad to say I am Mexican and never learned the language of my people, so I am trying to learn. I have been surrounded by Spanish my whole life and have spent the last 2 years trying to learn. I have learned more in this video than I have with Duolingo. Part of me knew how to do this only because I was surrounded by the language, but it never made sense to me and now I feel so much more confident in speaking to my family in Spanish! Gracias, Qroo Paul!
This was extremely helpful. You made this seem so easy and it definitely was. I will be reviewing this lesson and looking forward to many more. Thanks Paul 😊
I'm from Mexico and I was checking this lessons because my wife wants to learn, and is a great kick start, really helps to understand that you already have an immense vocabulary that you only need to transform a little, i wish i had that when i was learning english, now i understand enough italian portugese french catalan to understend conversations and it's because all this languages are very similar
I am so excited I have learned so much in such a short time. Today is the first day I cdd as me across your videos and I love them I studied Spanish I. College and on my own but I keep getting stuck on the understanding of the grammar and you made it so plain and simple I truly understand now. I believe following you will help me reach my goal. It is my desire to speak Spanish fluently because I love the language and I just love connecting with others in their own language. I can and love to sing in Spanish but I also want to hold a lengthy conversation as well. I think I can do it with. Thank you so much for sharing your gift. You we’re my blessing today
Thank you so much, you are an amazing teacher. Ive just found your channel and your lessons are brilliant. Thank you so much for taking the time to post these. They are super helpful. Love and all the best from Scotland ❤️🙏🏴
This was SO helpful! I really want to learn Spanish, as I have friends from Mexico who only speak Spanish, and we have to use the Internet on our phones to translate everything we say. (They are also trying to learn English.) Over the past year or so, I've tried many apps, books, and websites (even paid for) to learn Spanish and finally gave up. It became hard to devote the time to practice each day when it didn't seem to make a difference. But this one video taught me more than all those previous efforts together. You are a great teacher, and I look forward to the next videos. Thank you!!
Sir, you are a wonderful Spanish language instructor because you teach English speakers to grasp the heart of the Spanish language learning experience intuitively from an English perspective, which creates a manageable mental transition in accepting the learning process instead of the botched language trauma in the school system. Thank you so very much!!!!
You're an incredible teacher. Like others have said, you have taught me more with your videos than I have learnt on apps, books and guides. They are still a valuable resource. But your content is a big fish in the spanish language ocean!
Que padre, Paul! Me gusta mucho esta hack para aprender español! Usualmente, yo uso Duolingo para gramatica, y otros RUclips videos y películas para comprehensible input y escuchando. Este es uno más tool en mi toolbelt! (Ahora necesito buscar estas palabras no lo sé...) Muchas gracias! 👍
Hey! Thanks for writing that in Spanish, I am surprised(I thought I totally lost my ability to understand Spanish before watching Paul’s video) I was able to translate it while reading it.
I’ve watched soooo many videos on RUclips. Until I came across this video I wasn’t able to make sentences. Follow this trick is the best and to enhance your skills just memorize the most common used verbs. It works for me. Thank you.
As a spaniard May I say that the soft "c" only sounds "s" in latin america and the south of spain. The neutral castillian pronounciation is "z" . So, depends in wich country you are. Magnificent lesson. I have serious dificulty with english "r" and vowels 😂
So I’m a Hispanic that never was able to learn Spanish as I was born in the US and my family spoke primarily English . I finally feel like I have the courage to really try to learn now. This lesson could’ve saved me years of frustration had I seen this earlier 😭 I’m gonna stick with the course cause I bet I’ll finish learning my language that’s part of my culture and families culture! Thanks so much
I tried many courses and online teachers, and I'm happy to find you! To my mind, you are the best of them, so detailed explanation, the way of the explanation, associations how to remember words, how to create sentences, and many more. Thank you so much!
Oh my goodness. If this wasn't the BEST Spanish course ....Lesson I have ever had in Spanish, then my name is not ... Wow. Thank you so much for sharing. You are my teacher, for real. You are the one I choose for my teacher
Watching on my Lunch break at work. I’ll have to watch again a home and do the exercises out loud. I’m thrilled to of found your channel! You have made the most sense so far out of every program I’ve tried.
I liked this one again! I guess my old like got wiped out when you reposted. My Qroo Paul Word list has 104 words on it now! These are a list of all the words used in the first two episodes of your new series. Like I said last time I was really surprised how few of the cognates were on the "1000 basic words" list. This number does not count all the definite and indefinite articles you introduced. On the TV Spanish News program I watched last night has the word "invitar" but I checked and "invasion" in English, which I learned is spelled with a "s" and not a "t" is "invasión" in Spanish. These videos look fantastic production wise. One thing is that I noticed that for much of the time your hands are below the frame and we can't see them. You have to take a year of language to get a degree here at Sacramento State. I took a crash summer school class in ASL, (American Sign Language) which is the hand sign language used by deaf people. I also took some classes in railroad operations where I learned a little about the railroad hand signals that rail road folks use. My point is that your hand movements and facial expression carry meaning. But if your hands are out of the frame we can't see them. I thought that it might be from your years of police work that you keep your hand gestures close to your belt line just in case you need to use your service weapons. You are so perfectly framed in these shots that I don't want to suggest pulling the camera back and making you smaller. Maybe if you thought about it you could make your hand gestures higher. It is cool that even now you raise your hands up into the frame to emphasize an important point. My guess is that just me making you aware of how your viewers see or don't see your hands will help you to keep your hands in the shot frame when you want them there. Here is a quick question. At the taco stand that I frequent on weekends I get a burrito and a Spanish lesson every night. They are trying to teach me how to say mild as in not spicy. I was hearing "Pesoso" but I checked and this isn't a Spanish word. I am starting to think they were saying "picoso" as in "un poco picoso". The other theory I had at first was that I was hearing "soso" which is on my basic word list as "bland". Well anyway any incite you can give me on what I was hearing would be great. These videos are great Paul, keep up the good work.
I've never thought about the importance of showing my hands. I already thought I was waving them around too much as it is...lol. As far as the taco stand, they normally say no picoso o poco picoso for a little spicy.
I used another program similar to yours but you are by far better. You cut through all the formal and get straight to street talk. This is better than any other program I’ve seen.
I live in Colombia, took Spanish in high school and my story was similar to yours, and your course is helping me I look forward to watching all your videos multiple times.
You have a new subscriber! Wow, I can’t believe how simple you made learning Spanish. I have struggled with memorizing vocabulary and forming sentences for months. This video made learning Spanish a bit easier for me.
This was by far the best youtube video that I have found which breaks down everything easily and helps to understand the logic behind the language and sentence structure. Thanks so much!!!
Sir, I am greatly privileged to have you as my teacher! You are by far the best Spanish teacher I have ever encountered! Thank you so very much for making this language more doable🥰🥰🥰🥳
I first found your Two Expats Mexico videos and am getting a great deal out of them, both essential information on being an expat and enjoying when you share your and Linda’s experiences. Thanks so much for that. Because of the pervious exposure I found these lessons. Sadly, I see there will only be seven. Your teaching style is unique, you teach Americans how to speak Mexican. By that I mean you speak to how American think in terms of language and how to best become conversational in Mexican with that mindset. Brilliant. Makes so much sense to me.
Thanks for the positive feedback, Tom. As far as this series is concerned, it just wasn't popular enough to justify the time that was going into creating each lesson so I had to make a change. Hopefully, you will still find some useful material among the other videos I have. These days, I am making videos that cover a particular aspect of the language and then moving on to the next topic.
I was going to say the same EXACT thing. I've learned a lot on Duo but still couldn't put together sentences. This method is the missing link to put all those words together in order to actually communicate in Spanish. Brilliant 😂
This is excellent. Spanish will be my third language. After learning to become fluent in French I went looking specifically for Spanish courses that use phrases and focus on conversational skills. This is how I found your course. Thank you.
Paul, you are a gifted teacher. Learning conversational Spanish has been something I've been interested in for years, but each attempt left me feeling overwhelmed until I found your excellent videos. Your approach is so logical and "approachable." Thank you!
Amazing amount of material, and at the perfect level for someone who is coming back to this language after many stops and starts over the years. Your approach to becoming conversational is so smart. I really like the way that you don't waste any time, and everything you introduce is so clearly thought out. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work!
Paul, I am a huge fan! I took 3 years of Spanish in High School and didn't learn much of this! I am feeling empowered. Sorry that you discontinued this course. I will watch the rest and will look for your other classes. Thank you!
Thank you! All your lessons have been great, for a couple of reasons. Chiefly, because I have the sense that our time is used efficiently. This is because, though you are certainly friendly, there is not a lot of mindless chit-chat. Whenever I have heard you tell a few short stories about how you learned something, the story always has a point that helps us in the learning process. For example, I heard you describe your struggles learning Spanish while in the police force in Florida, AND what you did to overcome the problems. It showed you had motivation to start and the tenacity to overcome dificulty, rather than giving up. That helped me! It was not a frittering of time, it was a great help in a real story. Thanks for a great job!
Great 1st lesson. You make it fun and easy to follow.I have Spanish relatives, whom I'm sure to impress with what I have learned thus far. Looking foward to next lesson. Awesome!!!
Hola Paul, Linda. I want to express my thanks for your Spanish class series. Tengo ochenta y cuatro años and learning Spanish has been hard ... even while living here for much of the last 4 years. I´ve done everything regarding learning Spanish and my wife is very good. having years of Spanish in college but I just have a very hard time. I know lots of palabras, numbers, and touristy stuff but it was your course and the subjunctive videos that have really helped me begin to speak Spanish. I strongly support your work, look forward to even more help videos from you. Todo lo mejor! Leo

Although I've been learning Spanish for over five years, and have been living in Mexico for almost four, this video was an excellent refresher, thanks Paul - Anne
Thanks for watching, Anne. These lessons will be getting progressively more complex.
Thanks for taking on this project. I’ve been in Mexico for 9 months and have mainly been listening. Your early lessons have helped with recognizing the pronunciation. The natives have been very helpful.
That's great. Enjoy Mexico. :)
Thank you for your clear explanation. I love the cognate tricks and your pronunciation!
I'm so grateful that I came across your channel, simple yet perfect.
Literally the best lesson I’ve ever had !!
Well done, Paul. Thank you so much. You are a very talented hombre !
Thanks for watching Phil. I am excited about this project. I think you will enjoy the future videos as well.
Thank you!
Thank you so much, Debra. I am slowly adding to this latest course in between keeping up with my other hobbies and traveling. :)
Man, been trying for a year but have just thought I was too old. This guy has inspired me with one lesson. I think I can do it.
You can do it! Never too old.
Love your approach!! I'm excited to learn because I've finally found a good teacher!
Great stuff!
My wife is from Mexico and said you are a very good teacher and definitely one to learn from.
Thanks for sharing that. I appreciate it. :)
Your very welcome. I’m a retired police
Officer
Myself. I’m learning a lot from you!
I think you need to continue teaching. This is the best course around. Maybe it just took time to take off? Keep making the courses!! Good job.
Yes!! Spanish for adults, formulating useful sentences during the first lesson! So encouraging. Thank you!
Great lesson! I learned much more in 36 minutes than in a comparable amount of time on any of the language apps. I'm looking forward to more lessons!
OMG, I can't believe how fast I picked this up. Wow! This man has some serious teaching skills. Thank you so much, I can't wait to learn more.
Glad you like it!
yipee, more lessons, very helpful, after watching a lot of your lessons this past year I really have greatly improved with my Spanish. Thanks!
That's great to hear, Maria. This course will be the best I have done yet.
Hi there, I have a course of 12 weeks conversational Spanish if you´re interested :)
This was extremely helpful. You made this seem so easy and it definitely was. I will be reviewing this lesson and looking forward to many more. Thanks Paul 😊
This guy has a GREAT system, with built-in learning!!! Good job, Bro. I've been living in Mexico almost a year & this is very helpful.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
New subscriber here year 2024. I'm glad I found ur video😊
This is excellent Paul, thank you so much! You break it down very easily making it super easy to learn. Love it!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you so much for your easy to follow way of teaching. I’ve learned so much in this 30+min session! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Feel lucky finding this guy on Day 3 of my Learning Spanish journey
Welcome to the channel!
Thank you very much. I appreciate that. :)
Great to see this video back on ! Thanks
You're one of the best Spanish teachers on RUclips. I've been trying to learn for years, like my entire life. Lol. You're really helping me. Thanks!
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying the lessons.
Thanks so much
Just started my Spanish journey with you and I'm loving it. So clear and structured. I feel so motivated, thank you :) Jonny
I tried many courses and online teachers, and I'm happy to find you! To my mind, you are the best of them, so detailed explanation, the way of the explanation, associations how to remember words, how to create sentences, and many more. Thank you so much!
Wow, thank you!

Do you do Spanish translation to English?
You have a very clear voice and you pronounce the words very clearly for I can understand
You are absolutely the best spanish teacher out there. You have helped me so much. Thanks!
FYI, this course was recommended in a book called 'The Move To Mexico Bible'.
I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know.
Oh my goodness. If this wasn't the BEST Spanish course ....Lesson I have ever had in Spanish, then my name is not ...
Wow. Thank you so much for sharing. You are my teacher, for real. You are the one I choose for my teacher
you are a fucking godsend learned more in 35 minutes than in my whole month of Spanish classes
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson.
I was hearing
"Pesoso" but I checked and this isn't a Spanish word.
You have an amazing ability to present calmly and clearly these lessons. They are so informative and useful.
This a huge step for me in learning Spanish ❤🎉
I'm getting better in Spanish ❤🥳
That's great to hear!
I used another program similar to yours but you are by far better. You cut through all the formal and get straight to street talk. This is better than any other program I’ve seen.
Thanks!
Ty! Hopefully I can go from zero to conversational with the help of you!
Sounds good. More lessons to come soon.
WelcomeQ I think you will find this method more useful because I really focus on your English to help you learn Spanish.
This was by far the best youtube video that I have found which breaks down everything easily and helps to understand the logic behind the language and sentence structure. Thanks so much!!!
Glad it helped!
best class !!!!! Muchas Gracias!!!
Me alegra mucho que te gusten las lecciones. ¡Mil gracias!
2 years of Duolingo could not teach me what he taught me in 1 hour. 😮
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Paul, you are a gifted teacher. Learning conversational Spanish has been something I've been interested in for years, but each attempt left me feeling overwhelmed until I found your excellent videos. Your approach is so logical and "approachable." Thank you!
This was hands down THE BEST lesson I’ve seen in 2 years that I’ve been trying to learn Spanish
That's great to hear! Feel free to share it with others.
Amazing amount of material, and at the perfect level for someone who is coming back to this language after many stops and starts over the years. Your approach to becoming conversational is so smart. I really like the way that you don't waste any time, and everything you introduce is so clearly thought out. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Paul, I am a huge fan! I took 3 years of Spanish in High School and didn't learn much of this! I am feeling empowered. Sorry that you discontinued this course. I will watch the rest and will look for your other classes. Thank you!
I've learned so much in this lesson and I can't wait to learn more progressively. You're gifted, please, never stop teaching.
Thanks for watching and for leaving positive feedback. :)
Great 1st lesson. You make it fun and easy to follow.I have Spanish relatives, whom I'm sure to impress with what I have learned thus far. Looking foward to next lesson. Awesome!!!
Thank you! 😃
Leo
Thank you @QrooSpanish for these amazing lessons! I teach English to Spanish speakers and I have been trying to learn a little bit everyday from my students. I stumbled upon your videos this morning and I have made a huge stride in this process. So, THANK YOU!
You're very welcome!
I love this teacher , he teach the basic and explains everything one by one and make you more understand easy ways to learn , now I want to learning more in his class .
This is so helpful… I am amazed how I was able to translate some English sentences to Spanish on my own thanks to the awesome teacher!
