    The music of the last hours is just phenomenonally good at setting the appropiate atmosphere.

    I think the Clock town music is perfect, it's an attempt to drown out the despair, playing louder and faster as doom approaches, as if pretending harder that everything is fine and cheery will just make the moon go away.
    The soundtrack essentially is the towns increasing denial given a soundtrack.
    And those last final hours are the soundtrack finally accepting the truth.

      Denial. Clock town is denial in the five stages of grief.
      There's a whole thing about it that works amazing with the game.

    Dunno if you know the formidable work done by theophany for this game, trully a masterpiece.

      Rated E for Everyone! Now little kids can enjoy nightmares of going on their Nintendo 64 ever again! Before Super Mario 64 horror there was this, already a horror to begin with.

    There's something genuinely enchanting and upsetting about the last six hours before the moon falls. As a kid in 2000, it's seared itself into my mind. The master swordsman cowering in a secret back room, clearly terrified guards telling you to get as far away as you can, the ever-increasing quakes and bell tolls, Cremia seeming to give Romani alcohol laced milk so she falls asleep... It's a masterclass in atmosphere and before going to the final showdown I always find myself just kind of wandering around.

    • @DrkRyu
      @DrkRyu Год назад +4

      the guards standing still with their left hand to the chest is also terrifying. They won't abandon their post but they know exactly what will happen to them.

    • @Naterkix
      @Naterkix Год назад +4

      @@DrkRyu That's what I meant by "clearly terrified guards." For such a small, simple set of animations it really sells their mood despite the limitations of the N64's graphics.

    Playing this game as a kid was amazing. I always enjoyed dark stuff in fiction. Sadly my English wasn't yet perfect at the time that a lot of the text in-game eluded me in terms of knowing what to do, so progressing was hard. But that ended up being one of the many reasons why the game was so memorable to me, for the cryptic aspects it had. It might as well be my favourite Zelda game, if not for Ocarina of Time. Everything you mention in the video is the reason why I love this game so much--How the game gives enough hints to know for sure something is fishy (the timer and "DAWN OF THE X DAY" being shown dramatically), despite throwing you in a lovely town where things seem like nothing can go wrong.
    The tempo shifts each day with that one ominous tone on the 3rd day really added to that effect, especially if you haven't noticed the moon for the first time yet, you knew something was wrong. If anything, playing this game was one of my main highlights of my childhood in the mid 90s. My full immersion and attention to detail playing this game as a kid is the reason why I'm glad it was not age restricted, even if dark themes were involved, so I support the idea of letting kids consume fictions like that.

    There's nothing more mournfully cathartic as watching doomed people cope with their last minutes. It's heart stopping, terrifying, and makes you want to cry for them. And the whole atmosphere of that in the game is flawless. The sun setting, ending the final day. The empty echoes of music surrendering to loneliness. There's no rhythm because everyone is either gone or awaiting oblivion. Whereas all the other music seems to come from the bustling townspeople, by the end it's as if the music just manifests from nowhere as a memory about to be destroyed. Some of the few who are left are still trying to survive, but anything they try to do to protect themselves or others is just going through the motions. Thus nothing they do can contribute any urgency to the atmosphere.

    YES! Majora's music!
    It always gives me the creeps.
    If I may, kinda off topic...
    This BPM thing that goes faster as the days goes by...is it similar to how Crypt of the Necrodancer faces progression with their 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 levels?
    I always felt them to be getting faster and faster somehow, but didn't knew how to call it, or even if it is just a feeling, is it the same-ish thing?

      Funny you'd make that link; yes, it's absolutely the same! AND the wiki has the exact bpm.

    I''ll never understand why everyone seems to think that it's weird that they reused assets from OOT. That was a very common thing developers did around that time & is still done today.

      It's true that music speaks very loud to me! This series is a way to share that.
      As for summer stock, we don't have a strong tradition around here, but I must have been in a good 20 musical theatre shows by now.

      @@NicD Wow! That is a lot of musicals! ...I know that they are having regional theatre auditions soon down here. I am seriously wanting to go back to the summer stock theater that I was in. But, no can do! Even if I could work as a CNA during the day, and perform at night, it just won't work. Oh, well! If I want to revisit it musically, all I have to do is practice it! Even as I am driving down the interstate between people's homes! ...They are opening up membership in actor's Equity, for about another year. They are relaxing the standards. Honestly, I think your voice would be perfect for ALW Phantom. You have to be a member of Equity to even get an audition. If you need any help, just let me know! Oh, and please, check your email! I may or may not have heard from the producers of AGT! I don't know, because I assumed that the calls were from telemarketers! Take care! Susan
      Edit- our regional theatre auditions end tomorrow. I guess it just isn't the right time.

    Très intéressant comme analyse, bien vulgarisé et présenté de manière à comprendre comment la musique joue sur l'univers dans lequel le joueur est plongé.
    Je sais qu'il y en a une multitude sur les internets, mais as-tu déjà entendu les réinterprétations de Majora Mask de Theophany (les albums Time's end 1 et Time's end 2) ? Sur le premier album au moment ou l'artiste fait le thème du 3e jour, il accentue encore plus et de manière très exagérée cet effet d'accélération de tempo, avec une mélodie particulièrement déstabilisante (que cet artiste met en premier plan plutôt qu'en mélodie de fond), tout comme tu l'expliques dans le vidéo.

    • @NicD
