Terrifying Tree Transformation

- Ok maybe not terrifying but it is eerie and creepy.
From the Rudolph movie "Christmas in July", the only Rudolph movie to kill off its antagonist, Winterbolt, cuz lets face it, that is one dead tree.
"Wow, what an exit!"
A man died, Lily.
Ryan Cole (commercial break starts)
But he was very very bad.
He had it coming though.
Even villains know that it's important to be artful in their exits...
He exited life
Dude went from Saruman the White to Treebeard almost instantly
After watching the movie, I would say that Winterbolt's demise was sudden and anticlimactic, but I'm too busy recoiling in horror at what had just happened.
Same reaction Bob had including myself.
That was dark, was it not?

So Lily knew he was a fae creature weak to iron. Clever girl.
This is a VERY RARE time where a Rankin/Bass villain actually died and never got redeemed
Try Kubla Kraus from "Jack Frost".
And Burgermeister Meisterburger from Santa Claus is Comin' to Town.
@@TheYoshidude20 I don't think it was explicitly stated how he died, but it was likely natural causes. Regardless he is one of the few villains that never got their comeuppance.
@@ProfessorHanger I know that, but still he's worth mentioning since he's an asshole from beginning to end, the real comeuppance, (Not as satisfying but still) he has never found and recaptured Santa and his friends and after his death his anti-toy laws are abolished and Santa became the legend and Burgermeister became sand in an oyster's shell. So that's how it's put.
@@ProfessorHanger
Well Mr Wind blew him far away
Far as we know he could have had a terrible crash when he came back down but it's never explained where he went.
This messed me UP when I saw it at the age of seven (first run airing, I think). So much so that when I watched Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town for the first time a short while later, I was scared the same thing was going to happen to Winter Warlock. My mother reassured me, "No, sweetie, he's going to end up a nice old man." And he did. (Accompanied by one of the catchiest songs in an R-B special.)
It's unusual for R-B to more or less KILL OFF a villain, let alone in such a creepy manner. Most of the time, anyone who could be called a "villain" ended up turning good. Even when they were defeated, it was in a non-lethal way. The only other villain death I can think of in Rankin-Bass was the Burgermeister Meisterburger--and he just kicked the bucket off-screen.
This gave me nightmares as a child too lol
Mad Monster Party ?
When all the cool monsters got blown up at the end.
Also
"Wally McBean and his
Time Machine".
The T-Rex falling off the mountain to his death.
@@marlawhite1430 Hello? Jack Frost's villain Kubla Kraus! I have seen no evidence to suggest that guy is okay!
@@mdizzle99987
He's definitely dead.
They just didn't show it.
@@marlawhite1430 You're most likely right!
Marvel: "Avengers Infinity War was the most ambitious movie crossover ever."
Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July:
Before we had the MCU, we had the Rankin-Bass Universe...
It was a crossover between:
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)
Frosty the Snowman (1969)
Santa Claus is Coming to Town (1970)
The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974)
and Jack Frost (1979)
Wow, I remember watching this special growing up, but I didn’t recall seeing the villain die in such a horrifying, disturbing fashion. It would’ve been complete overkill if they went further and have the tree Winterbolt turn into immediately rot and decay into oblivion.
I love the fact that everyone there, including two icons of Christmas joy and Lily's own visibly horrified daughter just watched a man die horrifically and this woman just rolls with it "Wow! What an exit! Lucky break that no jury in the world will ever believe this!"
I dodged this one as a kid thank god.
"TRRREEEEEE."
This has been as rooted in my mind as he now is, scared me absolutely shitless as a kid
"rooted"...no pun intended? XD
Paul Frees... the legendary voice of Ludwig Von Drake and the Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion.
Eventually....Winterbolt stopped thinking...
i wasn't that creeped out until I saw this comment 🤣
My theory on why Winterbolt turns into a tree because he’s tied to the magic staff which is his life and source of all his powers. When winter goes away plants grow including trees so Winterbolt dies turning into a tree which is what happens to winer, it goes away to make room for trees and plants to grow. Besides Winterbolt is the former King of the North meaning he is the embodiment of Winter alongside Jack Frost, Snow Miser, and the Winter Warlock who are all embodiments of winter. Just a theory.
It would have made alot more sense to have Winterbolt melt into a puddle of water
Yeah.
I think this is a better way to die though
No because then it would look like he died like the wicked witch of the west died
@@officialchase02 In that case, maybe have him turn into a crystal sculpture.
CDProductions66 Yeah because if he were to turn into a puddle of water people might think he was the wicked witch of the west because that’s how she melted
I’ve seen this special my whole life, I’m turning 17 in a few days, and had an urge to watch some R/B stuff randomly. This scene is still disturbing as hell and I still watch it every Christmas on AMC.
Do you remember a Ranking Bass christmas cartoon called "Cricket on the Hearth"?
You want to talk about disturbing?
That had a monkey a raven and a cat gets shot to death by an evil sea captain.
And it also had a scene where a woman gets traumatized and goes permanently blind.
That was more disturbing than Winterbolt's death .
Never seen it, but now I will have to. Thanks for the heads up!
Dang, I don't remember Winterbolt’s death being this gruesome. Although it kind of reminds me of the Wicked Witch of the West’s death from the Wizard of Oz. Creepy 😬
Winterbolt: You've killed meeeee!!!!
Lily: Good!
I think I won't be sleeping toniight
Lily: wow what an exit
Me: One liner after the kill
Well now he can become treebolt, ally with the triffids, maybe even with treebeard, and then we will all be up a creek
Two things that bother me is that they rushed Winterbolt's demise rather than having a quick fight leading to it to make it more climatic, and that they had to have the reprise of "We're a Couple of Misfits" right before it. It seemed the song should've waited until after Winterbolt was dealt with.
0:40 His semi-tree face became nightmare fuel🫣
This creeped the heck out of me as a child the first time I saw it!
true nightmare fuel O.O
Ah I can remember this as a child.. traumatised me so badly... little did I know it still kinda traumatises me now.. but nowadays it’s not as bad as when I was a child.. how does that work? When I’m younger it traumatises me more than when I’m an adult.. hmm..
Lily is awesome in this scene
Still creepy af
Okay, I know the video is about Winterbolt's horrific death, but I just came because I love the line delivery of "But the guns are made of iron!" Classic!
I will send this to all my enemies
Why did I have nightmares like this as a child, but I never watched this video?
This scene gave me Vietnam flashbacks
Thanos has been defeated
Just like dr facilier’s death
Facilier was dragged into hell clawing and begging for his life.
Winterbolt had his sceptre shattered by Lilly and his powers and life force were destroyed cursing him to be doomed to an eternity as a lifeless tree.
Can’t say he didn’t deserve it though. He tricked Rudolph and tried to melt Frosty, Crystal, Chilly and Milly.
Wow. he really got himself "planted".
This scared me to tears the first time I saw it!
I loved how a side character like that circus cow girl was responsible for the death of WinterBolt
RIP winterbolt
The fact he knew exactly what would hapen to him and what he would turn into, tells me it has happened to him before, I think he´ll be fine... eventually
For Some Reason This Never Scared Me as a Kid,And I got scared of a lot of things in Movies as well as a talking tree in the mall,...,Still kinda scared of ET!😕 If I'm being Honest This is Actually My Favorite Rankin Bass Christmas Special! Too Bad it doesn't Air on TV Much Anymore,...Not that I watch those anyway cus they cut parts out,...Usually Just Watch My Mom's Old Recordings and Videos!
I remember this scene traumatized me so bad when I was little
That’s like every hurricane as it makes landfall
Iron being used to defeat a demon sorcerer.
This reminds me of David and Goliath.
Basically the death of Snow Miser, Winter Warlock, and Jack Frost if you think about it
But Jack Frost shows up later in the movie.
Snow miser was actually never a villain
That begs the question: Who actually controls winter? There are like, four or five beings who seem to control winter or have winter power.
@@LooneyVoices6398 Yeah, all they wanted to do was sing, dance, and talk to Mrs. Claus. It only got bad when they had to interact with each other.
@@LooneyVoices6398 They’re honestly my favorite version of the bickering siblings trope, because the writing of their arguments is actually really funny.
May harpies tear this tree apart
Winterbolt’s scepter is like a Horcrux from Harry Potter. If it gets destroyed, he would die.
I turn.....turn.....into....a.......treeeeeee......
I want the music score of this movie.
I saw this once as a kid. Couldn't remember the title of the movie, but this scene gave me nightmares!
0:53 That poor Ballerina 😞
I sure hope she gets over her trauma of seeing an evil wizard turn into a dead tree 😞
When he turns into a tree the ice castle of winterbolts collapse crushing scratcher and the dragons to their end
Remember kids: Steel-type moves are effective against ice-types.
And you thought Don Bluth villain deaths were overthetop?
Rankin Bass:
More Like Avengers: Infinity War
*avengers theme*
Isaiah 14:5
The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
Revelation 12:8
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Man I will agree Winterbolt sure did not prevail at all.
Original First Release on December 21, 1979
Yeah, if Gothel's motivation was a fear of death, then she would've behaved THIS way when Rapunzel's hair was cut. NOT looking in the mirror and then pulling her cloak over her face.
Imagine Voldemort dying like this.
So...one of his wrists totally snapped and his hand broke off.
That's even more gruesome.
That part doesn't look creepy to me.
