Preparing for winter cold. Wood Stove chimney cleaning and covering the roof of the tiny cabin

- Unseasonably warm weather has once again arrived at the weekend homestead. I knew that my luck was not going to continue to hold and that winter would eventually arrive. I had previously tried to cover the roof of the tiny cabin bunkhouse but the cold made the tar paper too brittle.
I wasted no time in getting that task checked off the list while the opportunity existed. It feels so good to know that come winter snow or spring rain, the roof is now protected from the elements until I can cover it with metal.
Another chore that was on the list was cleaning the wood stove chimney. I've been spending more time at the off grid cabin this year and burning much more wood. Even though it's been a very mild winter the wood pile is disappearing rapidly. At least I know that there will be no more danger of a wood stove chimney fire.
The bunkhouse is mostly covered in house wrap and the windows cut out. It's starting to look like a little cabin!
Great video. I like how you pray in your videos and give thanks to God. Awesome job.
Thank you for that Josh.
Keep ‘em coming and stay safe and warm.
In Jesus Holy Name…AMEN 🙏
I like that! Very much!
God is so good. I’m cheering your progress! 🤍😊🕊
Thanks Jack!
Terry your ambition and willingness to DO really inspires me to get my own projects going. Thank you for not fearing a possible fail, and thank you for giving the glory of the WINS to God. You have become a great inspiration to me over the last 10 months I've been watching. God bless you and keep the videos comming!!!
I love that! Thanks jason!
Proud to see the Lodge Dutch oven! Made down here in South Pittsburg, TN since 1896
Nice! Didn't know they were still in the USA!
Never hurts to clean the chimney no matter how clean it may look. We do ours up at camp every other year
If nothing else it make me feel good that it;s done
1. We need more River content :) lol 2. Thank you for showing your love and faith in God. 3. Post more videos please! It seems like I was waiting for this one forever :) lol
I'm experimenting with which helps with views, more vids or less. Still learning but lots more to come! Thanks for swinging in!
Agreed
Thank you. Enjoy your videos. Louisiana here.
Awesome! Thank you!
Never saw a guy clean a chimney through a bag from below!!!!!!! Crazy
If it works it works! LOL! Plus I'm afraid of heights so any way to avoid being on a metal roof is a plus.
Amen and thank you brother. I know the feeling of excitement and the occasional stress as we finish our cabin in the Missouri Ozarks. You’ve come a long way. God bless you.
Hi Mike! Hope your not freezing out down there in this last storm.
That soup looked amazing!
It was!
The progress looks good , it'll be a great building ,
So far so good.
That is going to be a nice little cabin 🥰 or whatever you want to do with it 😉.
I hope so. Hopefully the kids appreciate it.
Another great video. Bunkhouse will be a great addition to the camp.👍
Plus having the shower will be wonderful.
I love watching your videos, you’re quite comical at times🤣 Glad you were able to get the roof on the bunk house covered without falling off 🙀. So nice to see sweet River again. Happy New year from Mounds View Minnesota ❤️✌🏻
I didn't know you were a MN girl! Thanks for hanging out with us Robyn.
You’re the best Terry. Love your videos!
No, You're the best! 😉
Afternoon amigo 🖐😎👍
Hola!
Making good progress. I don’t recall if you said if you were doing T&G or drywall for the wall coverings. You certainly have the experience with it now. This place is getting to be almost as expensive as the shed cabin by the time it’s done. It’s quality though. Might have to put the well on hold for another year.. You may even consider marketing some River Dog apparel to offset the costs.
I think you are correct. Pretty sure I’m already deeper $ than the shed shell. Not sure what to do on the inside yet. Still debating cathedral ceiling or flat
Appreciate the video thanks
That was a lot of comments! Thank you for that! I really do appreciate you taking the time to support the channel and commenting on all of those videos. It takes time and effort on your behalf and it matters. THANK YOU Josh
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother
Good afternoon to you Earl!
Hi my friend
Obrigada por fazer parte do meu dia com seus videos, desejo a vc e sua familia um prospero ano e muiota saude, estaremos juntos com certeza em 2024, deus o abençoe
Thank you so much 😊
Happy New Year ! Looking forward to your adventures in 2024!
Happy new year BB!
Hey Terry:) ..heard some familiar music in the background for just a couple seconds lol…good choice ☺️
If you know ,ya know, right?
☺️right
reolink has cellular cameras that could do better than your game cameras and double as security cam. watch live video feed from your phone or desktop and the camera doesnt need wifi just a cell tower connection. the reolink go series. they have camo sleeves for them too
They actually just contacted me and wanted me to do a review in exchange for a camera. I said no but maybe I should go back and reconsider.
Your stove-pipe is upside down. The crimped end goes down so that creosote flowing down the inside cannot flow out to the outside of the pipe and cover everything nearby.
That makes sense but this is a telescoping pipe so it has to go that way
Great job with the chimney!!!❤😊❤😊❤😊 Thank you for praying on your channel 😊
🙏 Amen
Thank you for the support! As always......
@@TRERUNSWILD Always!!!!
Beautiful country up there, I go to ELY every August to BWCA
I did a canoe trip when I was in high school. Back when Dorothy Molters cabin was still on the island. What great memories you are making!
Been with you for a long time over a year I don't remember the first video but you're a good man and I've enjoyed your content.
I wish you nothing but the best in 2024 and we love you.
Shawn
I appreciate that! Back at ya bud!
Love to see a Brother in LE filling his off grid dream! Give RiverDog an ear scratch as always.
You got it!
I would consider throwing a mask on when you clean your chimney and wood stove in the future. You will inhale more particulates when heating your home with a wood stove. In my mind, you’re probably offsetting any negative health effects by being out there and letting yourself de-stress and sink into projects and simple living. But you may as well try and avoid high doses of particulates that aren’t necessary. N95 or KN95s from would be best for this purpose.
Yeah probably a smart idea. I do notice dust in the cabin and I'm convinced it's related to the woodstove use. So there is probably a lot that gets airborne during cleaning that I don't even see.
I'm new to your channel and I love it because you talk. I like some silent videos but I'm preferring videos with voice...I'm from Houston, Texas. Please be careful with the coyotes and foxes especially since you have a dog. Happy New Year!
Sometimes I talk too much! I have wolves too! Thanks for spending your time with us and stopping in to say hi!
Fine vid. Happy New Year!
Thanks! You too!
Measure three times, cut four times 😂
My step dad makes the BEST split pea soup!
Appreciate you including your blessing 🙏🏼 😊
Much love to your channel in 2024! ❤️ 🌲
Thanks, I appreciate that! All the best to you both! Looking forward to seeing your garden this spring.
Thank you sir for all the great content. God bless you and your family and a safe new year.
Thank you Mike. I appreciate that.
Happy New Year Terry and River!! Loved the critter cam shots and the banter, laughs, fun. You're channel is a regular for us and has been since the beginning when I said "hey honey, this guy is gonna make a cabin out of a shed"...we've watched ever since. It's going to get cold for you soon enough Terry...we're at -26c here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦.
Wow! you guys have been around for awhile then! Just finishing up that cold now. Looks like next week is super warm again.
@@TRERUNSWILD we have indeed! Yes, looking forward to a warm-up this week!! Cheers!
Happy New and the best to you and you family,
Thanks so much Jake!
Hi from Maine. Enjoy your channel.
Hello there! Welcome!!
Love the picture of the cabin porch all lit up at dusk. Very nice😊
Thanks! Sometimes it's hard to tell how they will transfer to YTube..I'm glad you noticed!
Terry you frightened me being alone on the roof! I am glad you’re ok but please be Safe!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Thank you, I will
I like watching other guys tackle the same issues I do. I started my cabin last summer on 18 acres of land in the Canadian north. Built it on solid bedrock that is miles deep. I plan to tunnel into it eventually to build a cold cellar cave that I can access though a floor hatch.
Cheers!
THAT would be AWESOME!!!! I'm still thinking about a root cellar. A way to leave stuff there and not freeze when I'm gone.
@@TRERUNSWILDexaclty I want to leave water and canned gooda deep enough so it won't freeze.
Just finished watching all your older videos of the tiny cabin build. So glad I did. You have a wonderful place in the woods to call your own. Looking forward to more laughs & info from you in 2024. 🤗
Thank you very much! That's a lot of watching!
@@TRERUNSWILD Well the last several weeks we have had a lot of snow/ice in East Tennessee & I couldn’t get out. Watching your videos was one thing I did to keep my sanity! Even my 16 yr old dog was getting “cabin fever” which is funny because we live in an actual log cabin. Lol 🤗
16! Must be a small dog. That is a long time time for a pup!
You're one of my favorite You're Tubers, Terry. Keep it up.
Wow, thanks! That is really nice to hear Jon!
I’ve been watching your channel for a while. I love your channel and the amazing things you do. It’s been my dream to live in an off grid cabin like you. It looks so relaxing and peaceful while you work and enjoy nature. Thank you!!
I'm not here full time but the plan is to spend more and more time here in longer chunks.
Nice hat! My husband is wearing the same one right now as I watched your video (we’re in Maine). I always feel the same. After the new year I’m counting up to spring and warm weather.
I got the hat as a gift from a Mainer! I love it! I can't believe we are almost to February! This warm has is flying by!
Just started watching your channel and subscribed. After watching the one where you were starting your rafters I think I developed anxiety 😂...but it's gone now since you have the roof covered 😉. I loved it when you prayed...thats when I knew I would subscribe to your channel. I learned years ago having God in your life doesn't mean you will be without problems, it just means you have someone to go to for help. About the deer going to the gut pile, they will actually eat it. My dad always took the stuff after we cleaned our deer back to the area where we hunted. He had learned that from his grandfather. My dad's side were loggers up in the UP of Mi. and Canada. They did a lot of hunting and fishing. He passed last year but am so thankful for what he has passed on to me.I really enjoy the outdoors and hope to someday return to the northern area and have a cabin. Thankful I found your channel and thank you for sharing a little of your life with the rest of us. God bless.
Well, I'm glad you decided to stick around! So weird about the deer! Nice looking pupper you got there, Riv says to say hi!
I always enjoy watching your videos ❤
I appreciate that!
Cheers bud. Enjoy ya
Thanks Walt! I appreciate that.
Wish I was there with you
Happy New Year! Naresh!
Many return to u as well buddy 🥰❄🌨⛄☃️
Happy New Year, Terry!! I have finally retired after 28 years in LE. Now I get to rebuild my little cabin in the woods. Wish me luck!!
I'm so excited for you! After about 6 months you'll start to feel like a normal person!
It looks like the bunk house is sizeable. I like it as one cannot have enough space to store stuff and make it look good! Best wishes!
I totally agree! Once I break it up for a shower space it might feel small quick,.
On the chimney, it’s the tar buildup that you don’t want because it’s flammable. Dry is good.
That is good to know!
Love watching your videos you always make me laugh. You have such a great attitude in everything you’re doing. Hello from New Hampshire 🇺🇸
Hi Linda! Thank you for stopping by!
Another great video. I have been going back and watching some of your beginning videos. What fun. I am a 75 year old man from Northern Indiana. I helped my daughter and son-in-law build a 22 x 24 master bedroom complex on their home 3 years ago and had much fun doing it. I can imagine the satisfaction you get from building camp Featherwood. I would like to hear your thoughts sometime of comparing starting with the Amish build to building it all yourself. I love seeing you express your faith as well.
Hi David! Thanks for stoppin in!. The Amish shell is so nice because it's fast. But they are made more as a shed so could be beefier in some areas. Plus they use green wood which is prone to mold. Other than that it sure was nice to have something there in a day that would have taken me 6 months to build. Plus they are super cheap compared to buying lumber
God bless you Terry, I have had a great time watching you from the beginning. You crack me up, you have such a great since of humor. God bless you both and Happy New Year. From North Carolina
Thanks so much Rita!
Great success. You the man
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the videos
Thanks for always watching brian!
May want to use some strapping to hold down the paper.
It snowed finally so that should weight it down. Hopefully until I can get the metal on
Soup looks delicious.
It was!
I'm Linda from Ohio. Love your videos or channel.
Hi Linda! I appreciate the kinds words!
Looks great!
Thanks Cory!
Awesome video video Terry!! Glad to see you got the roof covered up. I know you are glad to have that done. Thank you for bringing us along with you. I really appreciate it and I look forward to every video. I’m looking forward to the new adventures this year. Happy new year take care be safe buddy.
Thanks 👍 I'm glad to have you along with!
Happy new year! Having a guys night out at my cabin this weekend. Ready for a fire in the stove and playing cards
Sounds like a great time!
See it does work with the plastic bag but I you used to go up on the roof in the fall time and get it done every year, I am not trying to tell you that to do but the best time to do a roof is in the fall before winter this way you don’t get any snow or ice on the USB plywood I would have put a tarp over the roof just in case hello river anyways have a great week and weekend here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Hi Mike. I've never cleaned it from up top. Just down below. I did also put a tarp over the tar paper just for extra insurance
It’s always a pleasure watching your videos. Happy New Year Terry.
I'm glad you are enjoying them!
The bag is a good idea, but run it from the top down and be done. Maybe leave the stove connected and clean it from the top down and then clean out the stove. It's a Jotel stove it all comes apart.
I have to disconnect because the stove design. The pipe doesn't go directly into the firebox there is a series of chambers for burning. It would push the soot into those chambers and block air flow. I'm not a fan of heights so try to keep my feet on the ground as much as possible.
It’s certainly been a pleasure following along and getting to know you also Terry ! Although we get to see you and it’s just comments from us. lol. Kinda unfair I know 😂. Hope your new year is going great ! Oh and those ashes really help the gardens ! Big fan but also handy for icy spots so don’t usually have a much as planned for the garden. lol. Take care T
I bet the ashes would work well. Ol RD would probably have them tracked all over the floor though.
I had the honor of knowing one of the, if not the actual, original, ultra marathon runner and learned his story first hand. His name is Stan Cottrol. (spelling may be wrong) I knew him in the early 1980's, when he was doing his "Friendship Runs". Running those distances is amazing to me. I sure can't do it. He laughed real hard when I told him my (funny) thoughts about running. It is, "every time I think about running, I go and sit down, until the thought goes away". My respect for you went up a few notches today. ;-)
Hi Robert. I'll have to do some research on him. Probably an interesting story there. Thanks for swinging in to say hi!
The correct spelling is Stan Cotterll You will find he hold several world records.@@TRERUNSWILD
I wish I could help you. Love the show. You make me laugh
It would be easier with extra help but it's satisfying to do it all myself.
I thought I may have been one of the few to grab the Oreos on my way to camp every time. It has become a ritual with my two boys now. So much so that when we get in the car they both say, "When we stop to get the Oreos at Dollar General may I get the double stuffed ones too?"
Guilty pleasures!
Red fox typically has a white tip on the tail while gray fox has the black stripe and tip. Looked like a gray fox to me. Where I am in upstate New York I see about 10 red foxes to 1 gray. I have a birthing den on my property that brings a litter of red foxes each year. Some have a Blondish coat. I had a gray under my shed. They are great at keeping the rodents under control.
I was kind of leaning towards a grey. Good to hear the consensus. Good catch on the tail info. I would have never put that together.
Happy New Year, Terry! Your bunkhouse is coming along nicely. I’m glad you completed what you needed to do on the roof. Thanks for the adventure! Take care
Thanks 👍 Feels So good to have it protected at least
Wishing you and your family a very Happy and Healthy New Year!!!
I wish the same for you Donna!
Happy New Year... can't wait for what 2024 brings ❤
Same to you! Thanks for being part of the channel all this time lory!
It looks like you got that roof covered in the nick of time. Thanks for the video Terry & Happy New Year to you too !
For sure! Although next week looks decent again
Happy New Year Terry! Good progress on the bunkhouse. I look forward to some winter segments from the Northwoods. Take care and stay safe!
Coming soon! Happy New Year to you Steve!
Hey Terry! Hope all is well- I’ve been using a synthetic felt just for direct contact with steel roofs, much like house wrap. I have a pic of a oil lamp project to text you also- keep up the good work
Cool! or you can email if its easier. travdogger@hotmail.com
Your welcome and Happy New Year to you and your family, atb, looking forward to 24
Glad to have ya along with!
Chimney was not bad. With only being there part time you could go a couple years between cleanings.
That is good to know. Thank you.
I thought only people in Ohio call it POP👍
I really enjoy watching your videos. I hope River Dog enjoyed the ham 🦴.
The soup looked great, was that pea soup? Love to see you pray on your video. Great video brother!
Thanks 👍 He wanted to go outside but when he figured out the bone wasn't coming along with he wasn't. to happy with his choice!
Yes, Sir! Ham and pea!
I noticed a little rust on your stove top. Around here, the old people would rub a bit of pork fat on the hot stove which would season it similar to a cast iron frying pan. A friend’s grandmother kept a pigtail in a can on the back of the stove and would keep it seasoned. Salt pork fatback would not be a good idea, just fresh fat. You will get some smoke but you often do when frying bacon or pancakes, and it doesn’t smell bad like burning paint does.
That males a lot of sense and is the first time I've heard that idea! Thanks! I will do something like that!
Good day Terry, always enjoy the videos. We have a lot of big coyotes in Maine. Dna testing shows they're 25 percent wolf and 10 percent domestic dog, approx. Yours are probably similar.
That would make sense as we do have wolves here as well. I'd heard of that before or coy-dogs and you might be on to something.
Looks great it'll b fine. Happy News year. Keep em coming. Thanks for sharing 🎉🎉🎉
Hey Bud! HAppy New Year!
Happy New Year to you as well my friend.
Hi Kirk! Same to you!
Happy New Year, cheers.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video again. You are such a gem Terry...........I crack up at so many of your comments and expressions, etc. "Here's Johnny" "Measure 3 times, cut 4" LOL. Thanks for the laughs.
I would guess the fox is a gray. If you see it during the day, should have a black tip tail and the reds would have a white tip even with their other color phases. Looks black in the video but hard to tell with the lighting. Looking forward to your next video. Glad you got the little, little cabin protected before the snow storms that recently hit. So happy to hear others name their vehicles too! My truck is named Memphis from my travels to TN :)
Happy New Year! God Bless you and yours!
Good catch on the tail. I think you are right. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Happy New Year. Wishing you all the best.
And for you Richard!
Hey there brother, we are just on the other side of the border likely not too far from you. The wife works for Ontario tourism and we are opening up a snack shack on our farm on 61. Feel free to reach out if you are coming over this side of the border for anything.
Oh I will! If not sooner, I will be up at Tofte first week in Sept. We''ll have to keep in touch! Just got my new passport last week!
Happy New Year 🎉😊
Hi Christine! Hope all is well. Good to hear from you again!
Happy New Year Terry! Looking forward to more of your videos in the new year. God bless!
Thanks! Nice to see you're still around I hope all is well for you!
@@TRERUNSWILD oh I’m still around. I’ve had a bad 2023 with my ill mother but I love binging on your videos that I missed and keep living vicariously through your beautiful property. Can’t wait to see how the new building progresses in the spring! God bless to you and your family!
I'm sorry to hear about your mother but I'm glad that you are hanging in there.
Happy New Year, My friend, may the new year be prosperous and enjoyable with all the new adventures and the completion of task
Same to you! Thanks Patrick!
Enjoy your latest post glad to see your getting buttoned up for the winter. While watching your game cam footage you noted the deer sniffing and inspecting the gut piles. That’s not surprising deer and probably other herbivores are not exclusively vegetarian. It’s been reported that deer raid birds nest to eat the eggs so maybe there is some morsel they’re after. On a humorist note, why watching that with the lights out my wife tells me to get up and kill the fly on the screen. I grabbed a soft cloth and went after the intruder only to find out it was your cursor on your computer screen. Happy New Year.
HAHA! The cursor! That gave me a chuckle. I'm not sure why but the thought of a deer eating meat seems kind of gross! But then again I caught that squirrel eating the dead bird this summer so I suppose it makes sense.
@@TRERUNSWILD Oh rodents are big meat eaters, you know a squirrel is just a rat with a better Tailor and they eat anything. In the Southwest there a mouse that hunts. Small deer in Asia have large canines instead of antlers you never know.
What a interesting world we live in!
❤️👍👍👍
right on time Sandy! You are so dependable!
I just wonder why you build a secondary living space rather than making the main bigger or connecting to it as now you have to have secondary heat and other sources?
It is a bunk house for guests.
Been watching and enjoying your videos. Recently purchased some land, and interested in starting with a little off grid hunters cabin, and a bunk house or two....
You will NEVER regret that decision!
Long time dream to have a cabin in the woods. Been searching for the right lot on and off for 3 yrs, Finally closed on the property in December. Anxious to get the shed and get going, however a lot to do to prepare for it, plus covered in snow for a while.....Hopefully end of summer or fall, if not next year. but excited to get going. @@TRERUNSWILD
Bio char, especially when your not there watering everyday the char will absorb water. If you throw it in compost pile it will activate. I throw mine in chicken coop and by spring ready to use in garden
Hmmm. Now I'm going to have to do some research. So you are saying I shouldn't put in in the garden right off? Bio char is all new to me.
@@TRERUNSWILD you can it will take longer to get all the bacteria growing ginger on it. Compost pile everything is concentrated so it goes faster.
Oh okay, that makes sense!
Hey Tre, great work on the wood stove and chimeny. RD is looking good. Chonky coyote! Traversing all that ice is crazy. 😮 The cold weather is taking its toll on the batteries. Gonna be a great view out of those new windows. Glad we got to be buds over the years. Can't wait see your adventures in 2024. Happy Carnival. 🎉 Be well and stay safe. 🙏 Puck.
I'm glad too Puck. Your a big part of the channel and I appreciate all you do to support and connect!
Glad ya didn’t slide off the roof!! You’re making great progress. Did the podcast you listened to inspire your running itch? I got into the spring superior trail 12.5 k race yesterday for mid-May. Who knew I’d make the lottery. Happy New Year Tre! 👍🏼
I got a Fargo marathon entry for Christmas. And for the first time in 3 years I'm excite to run again. And yes.......I'm in for fall superior. Good for you getting into the spring, my buddy put in for the marathon and didn't get it.
Hey Terry, The bunkhouse is coming along nicely. Glad you got it dried in and protected. Nice footage of the wildlife. I have some trail cam pictures of foxes on my property in upstate NY, but I can't tell if they are red or gray foxes because they only show up at night. Have a great weekend!
I had my camera t close to the gut pile eso it really washed the pics out. I should throw out some cra kill and set a cam up.
What pitch is that roof? looks great
It is 8/12. Not quite tall enough for a decent loft. In hindsight I probably could have stuck with a 6/12
Hi Terry been catching up on all the videos since I just found your channel. I really enjoy them and look forward to watching your new build. Please show your new solar hookup when you do that. Do you think the old cabin will get used less once you get the new one going?
I was really sorry to see the trouble you had with the insulation going moldy from the moist lumber your Amish friend used. I really like the tongue and groove it looks very nice.
