My mom does lentils cooked with 1/2 can of the Rotel to 1/2 lb lentils. With the regular amount of water. She adds salt and olive oil simmered on low til water is absorbed. Sauté’s garlic and whatever onion and peppers she has on hand with salt and pepper. And uses it as a topper over the lentils. On of my faves.

Lots of salad? Then salad soup is the thing :). We eat toast with goat's cheese, but it's up to you if you'd rather have something else.
200 g flour potatoes, 1 Shallot, 1 clove of garlic, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 600 ml Vegetable broth, 300 g Lettuce, 100 ml whipped cream, 2 tablespoons Creme fraiche, Salt, 1 splash of lemon juice and pepper from the grinder.
    1.
Peel and slice the potatoes. Peel shallots and garlic cloves and finely chop. Fry together in hot oil until translucent, add the potatoes and deglaze with the broth. Simmer gently for about 20 minutes.
    2.
Wash and clean the lettuce, spin and cut into strips. Add the soup, bring to a boil and puree until smooth. Add the cream and let it simmer a little more or add stock if necessary. Stir in the crème fraîche and season with salt, lemon juice and pepper.
    3.
Pour into bowls or cups and serve with goat's cheese toast, if desired.

I never get groceries at Target unless its a clearance price. It's generally slightly more expensive than Walmart. Target also offers 5% off if you use their store debit card or whatever which helps if you're a regular shopper there. I regularly get 20% off certain grocery offers at Target with Target Circle but never use it.

I add ground chicken or turkey to a bean chili I make. Mix ground chicken with some refried beans, onions and garlic for a burrito wrap with some fresh tomatoes and sour cream to dip them in. . Ground chicken meatballs.....add ground chicken, Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, 1 egg, ketchup, splash of milk, finely diced green pepper & onion, shredded Parmesan, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Brown the meatballs and then place in a sauce pan of tomato sauce and simmer til heated through. Serve over some pasta and a sprinkle of Parmesan.

Those were some great prices from a discount grocery store. Most people in the US don't live near a store like that. Wal-Mart is cheaper than Aldi, but Aldi is cleaner eating without the extra additives to food. I wish Wal-Mart had the prices like you found. The Wal-Mart app is nice because you can change the zip code and see the different prices for other areas. I'm enjoying your meals. Keep it up!

For next week, you can make some mayo or buy some. With what you have, I suggest potato salad. You can use the pickled radish in it as well as using up potatoes and eggs. I'd also make black bean burgers for the buns. Then use the chicken and veg scraps to make broth and use the pasta and some veg with the broth to make a soup with the tortillas baked into a cracker :) You can also do an egg and potato burrito for breakfasts. I love challenges like this. ~ Suzi ~

all the recipes come from My Mom and our dairy farm unless stated otherwise
In the sumer we would have family and friends come over for a Bar-be-cue which included Barbecue meat from animals we raised and buchered ourselves. The old fashion Ice Cream cranks (at least 2) with old toweld for one of the kids to set on and several people to turn the crank. After my Mom died I took her Brown recipe box and any other special recipes and saved them to my Recipe files. I also took her favorite recipes from all her Farm Journal cookbooks and put in my file. Along with a Family Recipe book I made years ago of each of my brothers(3) and sisters (2) and mine and made it for each of my brothers & sisters and their children and my Mom for Christmas presents. I am so glad I did because both my parents are dead and my oldest sister and 2 of my brothers. Now my 3 teen grandchildren will have those recipes.

It's a beautiful things to pass on those family recipes. There are so many memories that are tied up in the food that was made for us as children. The smells the sounds and the taste can last with us for a lifetime. I love the history of food but I think that the very personal history of food within families is the most meaningful. Dad's favorite Meal From the Kitchen of: Alderson Family Favorite Meals Barbecue Rib Steak and we all loved these for that meal
    Bar-Be-Cue Potatoes in foil
For each person scrub & slice a potato in 1/8 inch without cutting all the way through. Put a couple of tablespoons of butter on it, forcing some into the slices while holding potato all together. Salt and pepper it. Put a nice big slice of onion on top. Use heavy duty aluminum foil, and wrap with a roll and seal on top. Repeat foil wrap! Bar-be-cue on grill for about an hour. Bake extras for those hungry people or to use the next day. Can be roasted in 350 degree oven for 1 hour! I usually do two potatoes for each person. Over the years different people in the family (if they are there when making them or tell you what they want have found other things they want in with their potato. Different spices, celery, mushrooms (for me they get to soft), sweet green peppers. What would you want yours and what can you think to add.
Dad's favorite Meal - Bar-Be-Cue Potatoes but in the SLOW COOKER
For each person scrub & slice a potato in 1/8 inch without cutting all the way through. Put a couple of tablespoons of butter on it, forcing some into the slices while holding potato all together. Salt and pepper it. Put a nice big slice of onion on top. Use heavy duty aluminum foil, and wrap with a roll and seal on top. Repeat foil wrap! Bake extras for those hungry people or to use the next day. Stack them in the SLOW COOKER using rack at the bottom or 2 -5 metal jar lids! Add water so it is not touching the potatoes!
Cooking time will depend on the size of each potato. On HIGH 2 to 3 hours on LOW 6 to 8 hours!
Serve with bowls of SOUR CREAM, Bacon buts, chopped chives or chopped or sliced thin green onions or your favorite toppings

I used to cross the border 3 or 4 times a year and do a pantry stock up at Target, Meijers, Kroger, Dollar Tree and Aldi. But we don’t go very often anymore due to cost of gas, exchange rate, and cost of groceries now …Not generally worth it anymore. Over the years at Target I have gotten some great clearance deals especially after Christmas if you time it right at 90% off. I LOVE Aldi! They have some great products and used to load up at Christmas on specialty cheeses that were so cheap. We also used to get Kerrygold grass fed butter for $2.19 1/2 lb so good and cream cheese used to be $.79. Miss it. While things aren’t as cheap as previous sometimes it is the variety that we can’t get in Canada. That being said we are making a quick trip to upper NY in a couple of weeks to see my niece in a play so I checked and there is a target and Aldi nearby so will do a quick trip in! You gotta check out Aldi and Trader Joes is also fun!

I think I'd go for: cheese (two varieties- cream cheese and a shreddable cheese that you like, maybe mozzarella or cheddar?), a can of diced green chilies, baking soda (just to have on hand), onions, cream (for making more yogurt)
Frittata with the eggs (mix in a little oat milk to thin them out), potatoes (I'd suggest cooking them first- good for meal prepping) and whatever garden vegetables you have. Top with some of the shredded cheese and serve with ketchup if desired (Makes 4-8 servings, depending on the size of the pan you use and how many eggs you use)
Enchiladas with a filling of black beans, cream cheese, and green chilies (I usually riff on budget bytes' "creamy black bean taquito" filling for this!). Use half the can of tomato paste to make enchilada sauce (I like budget bytes' recipe). Then, just roll the filling in the tortillas (or layer the filling and tortillas) and put in a baking dish, and cover with the sauce and shredded cheese! (I think this would make ~8 filling enchiladas, easily- pair with a side salad and each enchilada could be a reasonable portion, or you could do 1.5 or 2 per serving)
Make chicken stock with the onion skins and chicken bones, then use the frozen chicken meat, onions, and whatever other vegetables you have to make chicken soup. You could put in rice, make noodles using the flour (or just use the rest of the dried pasta you already have), or make dumplings using the baking powder and flour. You could add a creamy element by finishing with some of the oat milk. (Depending on how much stock you make and what vegetables you add to the soup, could make anywhere from 2-8 portions of soup)
You could also make a few pita pizzas using the cheese and leftover tomato paste (+some water and herbs), and pick up a topping or two to put on them? (maybe 2 portions?)
If you aren't close to the budget with your purchases, you could always use this as a chance to stock up on any staples you are running low on or would like to add to your pantry!

well, you won't need to buy bread...tortilla's make good bread substitute. What would I buy next week? 1. Real milk so you can make your yogurt/sour cream ) i'm not sure the oat milk will work for that as it's missing the lactose sugars.2. a meat of some sort...what ever is on sale or cheap will work. 3. you have veg in your garden but maybe veg or fruit you don't have. Hubby and I have been enjoying deep fried zucchini or sliced cucumbers instead of the standard veg with a meal. Also found that I can reuse my pickle juice from store bought dill or my home canned gerkins or cowboy candy brine to pickle other things like onions, carrots, my own cukes, anything really. and they taste better than store bought pickles. Problem is that they do need to sit for about a week before they are pickled well.

The shelves in this grocery outlet store seemed really neat, so this tip probably wouldn't work there, but if you are in a store where the shelves are a little messy, it pays to reach in the back on both sides of a sold-out sale item. Sometimes items have drifted out of their row and you can find the last of the sold-out items.

Looks like you have the ingredients to make potato tacos next week! Boil and mash a potato or two (no milk or butter, just mash the plain potato with a bit of salt) then spread some on half of a corn tortilla, fold it over and pan fry it in a bit of oil until the tortilla gets crispy. Best served with a bit of cabbage, radish (your pickled ones would be good!) and some crumbly cheese and hot sauce.

You can take the corn tortillas and sort of hang each one over 2 of the metal rungs in the top rack of your oven and make crunchy taco shells! Brush them with oil the same as you did for the tostadas (or use cooking spray) and it helps to microwave them a tiny amount 1st so they are softer and drape better. I've also heard of people doing the same over the bottom of an inverted muffin pan to make little taco salad cups, but I haven't tried that. I bet you could render those chicken skins and combine with your black beans and a chicken bouillion cube to make some tasty refried beans for them. Do you budget for coffee or tea? I'd have a hard time just drinking water only all week. I'm a big fan of the water enhancer drops and they are pretty inexpensive, too, if you get the store brand. Walmart brand are better than name brand Mio. Of course homemade iced tea is cheap, but I don't know if it's something you commonly have in Canada.

I think that some other areas in the US might have lower prices and if I'm near one I would check out an ALDI for sure! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video

Chickens are larger in the United States because the FDA allows the use of growth hormones and antibiotics in chicken feed while in Canada this practice is Illegal.

@@JessicaWanders In the US, the FDA does NOT allow the use of hormones. And antibiotics are required when when poultry is sick or injured - THE SAME AS IN CANADA. They are free of those antibiotics when they go to market.

The majority of people who shop at Target are woke snowflakes 😂..most Americans shop at places like Walmart or Kroger or Fiesta mart or tom thumb or if your fortunate enough to have an old fashioned indoor market like the one in Cleveland ohio..but most of us like me use Dollar tree and dollar stores or discount food marts like winco..i just store hop and go wherever is cheapest but Texas is so hot right now I do my shopping from the comfort of my couch..lol but seriously next time your in America try a Dollar tree.. they're practically a grocery store...if you get a chance to try a sams club they're amazing and their snack bar is cheap..oh yeah grocery outlet we had one in Lawton Oklahoma when I lived there at i loved it..glad you liked your grocery run vacation...

Winco was another suggestion that I might have to check out next time and I forgot about Dollar Tree! You apparently have a LOT more grocery options at Dollar Tree than we have here.
