Triggers are a sensor that you place on your bass drums and reroute to a microphone, at any point that the kick head makes contact with the bass drum, the sensor "triggers" and produces a sound through the mic'd unit regardless of how hard you hit the bass drum. You could hammer down with your foot or just let it barely touch it, but the resulting mic'd sound will be the same. IN OTHER WORDS, since you don't have to constantly hit the drum hard to make the noise loud, you can preserve energy.

well, essentially they CAN make you perform faster. you can exerct a whole lot less effort per stroke and just use contact strokes. but generally no, drummers play the same way they would without triggers.
triggers dont make you any better or faster :)
