I just spent an hour on the phone with HP technical support trying to figure out how to use the document feeder on the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. $1000 and it HP can't do it. Ridiculous. The tech support guy was baffled too. Couldn't understand why HP would make a printer that was such a hassle to print a simple envelope. A simple thing like that. HP used to be a great company that made great printers that were user-friendly. I used to have an HP Laserjet 4500 Series printer that I bought in 1999. It never broke down. It was a dream. Now HP printers are a commodities like corn or hogs or chicken feed. Now they make printers that are user-unfriendly. The $1000 HP M283fdw printer design is shoddy and way, way over-priced for its inferior features. For this customer, the "H" in HP stands for "hassle."

i have the full metal jacket hp 4550n, with add on 20lb in weight duplexer... all in you need like 2 people to lift it and a third to walk in front of them with a red flag.... HP do tend to look after customers, they even did win10 drivers for mine despite being so old it was discontinued many years ago, and my old designjet 500 a0 also has win10 support, also the plastic is like something from a riot shield you dont ever worry about doing it damage or using it as a weapon in a zombie apocalypse. I just don't think the build quality is the same on the newer ones, you get faster speeds and newer features, but i don't think the plastic is weapon grade anymore and wont have as much metal in the cog department, but i am still thinking of one.

Thanks for this comprehensive review, which I found very useful as I'm thinking of buying this model.
I've seen other reviews where they say that this printer is expensive, but the current price at John Lewis is £365, which is a gift for a colour laser printer/scanner and is the same price level as an inkjet. Two years ago this would have been way over £1,000. I think some people are missing that this is a laser.
One bit of confusion at the end - you said that scanning from the printer itself doesn't allow saving to PDF. You then said if you scan 'from the printer itself' using the software on the laptop, there is a PDF option. I think you meant if you scan from the laptop. Is that correct? if so, perhaps you could superimpose a caption on the video to clarify, as a lot of people will be confused by it.
What are your thoughts on the device now, after having used it for a while?

It's $300 at Costco starting tomorrow, and we need a new printer badly, especially for a current home project that involves printing hundreds of pages. I'm hoping this will be "a hit. Two of the 3 HP printers we've had have been hits, though our last inkjet was a miss, constantly jamming in maintinance mode and going into that mode almost every time you try to print, plus printing line by line painfully slowly on image-heavy pages. Waiting for that thing to print was like watching grass grow or paint dry. Hoping this will be better, but even if it isn't we're getting it from Costco which is a relief.

Very pleased. It is the first proper laser printer / copier I have owned. I had to hard wire the ethernet as my wireless connection from the detached building was flaky - no reflection on the printer - my phone doesn't connect either. But scanning and printing g both black and white and colour both great.

Great review! Would you be kind enough to answer a couple of questions?
Can this printer automatically create a double sided photocopy, i.e. in one go, without either having to re-feed in the source paper or paper being printed?
I notice this printer says it automatically updates it's firmware from the internet to block 3rd party toner cartridges. If you avoid connecting it to the internet, does it still work ok, or does it refuse to work without internet after a while?
    Thank you!

You didn't give details to one of the most important factors of any WiFi printer. That's the ability to be hacked. Hackers hack WiFi printers BC they are rarely secured where they will get intonyour network and hack all your devices. You should cover how to secure your wireless printers

    • @RoyJohnsonMusic
      @RoyJohnsonMusic  3 года назад +1

True not something I had considered. However, to connect this printer to a wifi network I have to enter the network passcode. Maybe you could let everyone know what this isn't safe and what else they should do?

    • @TheYoungerSemiOldMan
      @TheYoungerSemiOldMan 3 года назад +2

@@RoyJohnsonMusic sure. Here you go. I'm not an expert but have been reading a lot on it lately and the reason why I don't connect my printers to WiFi. Here's a little something will copy/paste for you.
      1. Limit or disable network printing
Having an unprotected printer connected to your home or company network is like leaving an unlocked door to your room or office. So, make sure to review and disable anything that involves printing over the internet. This includes configuring your network settings so that your printer only answers commands that come via your network router.
Depending on your printer model, this can be done by:
Pressing the wifi button on the printer itself
Finding and turning off the wireless printing setting via the printer’s control panel
Disabling printing over HTTP in your Windows registry settings (advanced users only)
Also, don’t forget to turn off your printer when you’re not using it - if there’s no connection, attackers can’t compromise your network.
      2. Secure your printing ports
Unsecured ports are probably the easiest avenue for hackers to access your printer. This means that you should enable only those printing protocols that you will use. For example, the standard protocol for secure printing on new printers is IPPS protocol via SSL port 443, so leave that open.
All other optional, unnecessary, and rarely used protocols and services like AppleTalk, Telnet, FTP, and SNMP can expose your network to potential attacks and therefore should be turned off.
If you’re not using any of the following network ports, you should disable them:
      Ports 515, 721-731, and 9100
Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) on port 631
The Server Message Block (SMB) protocol should also be disabled
Don’t know how to disable these ports? See your router’s user manual to find out how.
      3. Use a firewall
This should go without saying, but you definitely need a secure and reliable firewall. If you’re a Windows user, your operating system already comes with a pre-installed firewall - simply make sure it’s enabled at all times. It will protect unused protocols that can allow hackers to remotely access your printer from outside the network.
If you want more advanced protection, however, you might have to buy a specialized firewall.
      4. Update your printer firmware to the latest version
Printer manufacturers regularly fix known vulnerabilities in the firmware for the devices they produce, so make sure your printer always stays up-to-date security-wise. Closing any known security holes with the latest version of firmware will help you avoid most basic network printer issues.
Keeping your firmware up to date is even more important if you use a printer at home, as most business-class printing machines have additional security features that home printers lack.
If you’re as forgetful as we are, simply set up a recurring reminder to check for updates on your calendar app once every couple of months or so.
      5. Change the default password to a strong passphrase
Most printers tend to be connected to wifi, which means they can be accessed remotely with a password. However, most printers also have default administrator usernames and passwords that hackers can easily look up and use in order to gain access.
If you haven’t changed your printer’s default password, do this immediately. You should find the option to do this in the utility settings of your printer. Instead of going with a password, consider creating a long, strong, and unique passphrase to make it a nightmare to brute-force. You can also use our unique password generator tool that generates strong passwords that are almost impossible to crack.
Lastly, make sure printing always requires log on credentials - consult your printer’s manual to find out how

I can see both sides to this. I've had 3 HP printers, all ink jets. The Photosmart and especially the Envy 7640 were awesome, but the OfficeJet 6958 gave me problems almost from day one. It continuously jammed paper whenever it went into maintinance mode, and often tried going into maintinance mode when we tried printing. I cannot count the pages wasted to that thing. We broke out the old Envy for the project we're working on, but it's several years old and just can't keep up with what we need to print right now, so we'll be getting the HP M283 at Costco today and hope it'll be great like the Envy 7640, not crap like the OfficeJet 6948. It'll be our first laser printer, so I guess it's a toss-up. At least they have a great return policy if it sucks.

@@WereReallyRelayCamping I think it might be fine if you’re running it with a PC, the problem for me ended up being the HP Smart app for Mac, it’s extremely buggy, it doesn’t work for network ( wireless) printing , it doesn’t see this particular printer, and I didn’t read the reviews on the AppStore regarding the HP Smart App, I saw a lot of other similar issues that I had with it.
